הוֹד֣וּ לַ֭יהֹוָה קִרְא֣וּ בִשְׁמ֑וֹ הוֹדִ֥יעוּ בָ֝עַמִּ֗ים עֲלִילוֹתָֽיו׃
O Give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.
Give thanks to the L rd, call out in His name. Proclaim His deeds among the peoples.
שִֽׁירוּ־ל֭וֹ זַמְּרוּ־ל֑וֹ שִׂ֝֗יחוּ בְּכׇל־נִפְלְאוֹתָֽיו׃
Sing to him, sing psalms to him: talk of all his wondrous works.
Sing to Him; play to Him. Recount all of His wonders.
הִֽ֭תְהַלְלוּ בְּשֵׁ֣ם קׇדְשׁ֑וֹ יִ֝שְׂמַ֗ח לֵ֤ב**׀** מְבַקְשֵׁ֬י יְהֹוָֽה׃
Glory in his holy name: let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Glory in [the stronghold of] His holy name; let the heart of the seekers of the L rd rejoice.
דִּרְשׁ֣וּ יְהֹוָ֣ה וְעֻזּ֑וֹ בַּקְּשׁ֖וּ פָנָ֣יו תָּמִֽיד׃
Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face continually.
Search out the L rd and His strength; seek His face always.
זִכְר֗וּ נִפְלְאוֹתָ֥יו אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֑ה מֹ֝פְתָ֗יו וּמִשְׁפְּטֵי־פִֽיו׃
Remember his marvellous works that he has done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
Remember the wonders which He wrought, His signs and the judgments of His mouth.
זֶ֭רַע אַבְרָהָ֣ם עַבְדּ֑וֹ בְּנֵ֖י יַעֲקֹ֣ב בְּחִירָֽיו׃
O seed of Avraham his servant, you children of Ya῾aqov his chosen ones.
O seed of Abraham, His servant; sons of Jacob, His chosen ones —
ה֭וּא יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ בְּכׇל־הָ֝אָ֗רֶץ מִשְׁפָּטָֽיו׃
He is the Lord our God: his judgments are over all the earth.
He is the L rd our G d; His judgments are in all the earth.
זָכַ֣ר לְעוֹלָ֣ם בְּרִית֑וֹ דָּבָ֥ר צִ֝וָּ֗ה לְאֶ֣לֶף דּֽוֹר׃
He has remembered his covenant forever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
He remembers His covenant forever, the thing which He commanded [and promised to observe for them] unto the thousandth generation [viz. Deuteronomy 7:9],
אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּ֭רַת אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם וּשְׁב֖וּעָת֣וֹ לְיִשְׂחָֽק׃
which he made with Avraham, and his oath to Yiżĥaq;
whereupon He made a covenant with Abraham, [and sealed] His oath with Isaac.
וַיַּעֲמִידֶ֣הָ לְיַעֲקֹ֣ב לְחֹ֑ק לְ֝יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל בְּרִ֣ית עוֹלָֽם׃
and confirmed the same to Ya῾aqov for a law, and to Yisra᾽el for an everlasting covenant:
And He set it up for Jacob as a statute; for Israel, as an eternal covenant.
לֵאמֹ֗ר לְךָ֗ אֶתֵּ֥ן אֶת־אֶֽרֶץ־כְּנָ֑עַן חֶ֝֗בֶל נַחֲלַתְכֶֽם׃
saying, To thee I will give the land of Kena῾an, the lot of your inheritance:
Saying [(this being the covenant)]: To you shall I give the land of Canaan, the portion of your inheritance.
בִּֽ֭הְיוֹתָם מְתֵ֣י מִסְפָּ֑ר כִּ֝מְעַ֗ט וְגָרִ֥ים בָּֽהּ׃
when they were but a few men in number; of little account, and sojourners there:
When they were yet few in number, sparse, and sojourning in it,
וַ֭יִּֽתְהַלְּכוּ מִגּ֣וֹי אֶל־גּ֑וֹי מִ֝מַּמְלָכָ֗ה אֶל־עַ֥ם אַחֵֽר׃
when they went from one nation to another, from one kingdom to another people;
and they [(the patriarchs)] went around from one nation to another; from one kingdom to a different people,
לֹא־הִנִּ֣יחַ אָדָ֣ם לְעׇשְׁקָ֑ם וַיּ֖וֹכַח עֲלֵיהֶ֣ם מְלָכִֽים׃
he suffered no man to do them wrong: but he reproved kings for their sakes; saying,
He allowed no man to despoil them and He chastised kings over them [viz. Genesis 12:17].
אַֽל־תִּגְּע֥וּ בִמְשִׁיחָ֑י וְ֝לִנְבִיאַ֗י אַל־תָּרֵֽעוּ׃
Touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no harm.
Touch not My anointed ones [i.e., My great ones], and harm not My prophets.
וַיִּקְרָ֣א רָ֭עָב עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כׇּֽל־מַטֵּה־לֶ֥חֶם שָׁבָֽר׃
Moreover he called for a famine upon the land: he broke every staff of bread.
And He called out a famine on the land [(in order to exile them to Egypt)]; He broke every staff of bread.
שָׁלַ֣ח לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם אִ֑ישׁ לְ֝עֶ֗בֶד נִמְכַּ֥ר יוֹסֵֽף׃
He sent a man before them; Yosef was sold for a servant:
He sent a man [Joseph] before them [viz. Genesis 45:5]; Joseph was sold as a slave.
עִנּ֣וּ בַכֶּ֣בֶל (רגליו) [רַגְל֑וֹ] בַּ֝רְזֶ֗ל בָּ֣אָה נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃
whose foot they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron:
They tortured his foot with fetters; his soul was clamped in iron.
עַד־עֵ֥ת בֹּא־דְבָר֑וֹ אִמְרַ֖ת יְהֹוָ֣ה צְרָפָֽתְהוּ׃
until the time that his word came to pass: the word of the Lord had tested him.
Until the time of the coming of His word [i.e., the time for the materialization of His decree that Israel go down to Egypt]. The word of the L rd tested him [(by the temptation of Potiphar's wife [which resulted in his being cast into prison])].
שָׁ֣לַח מֶ֭לֶךְ וַיַּתִּירֵ֑הוּ מֹשֵׁ֥ל עַ֝מִּ֗ים וַֽיְפַתְּחֵֽהוּ׃
The king sent and loosed him: and the ruler of the people let him go free.
The king sent [messengers] and [they] freed him; the ruler of peoples [sent] and released him.
שָׂמ֣וֹ אָד֣וֹן לְבֵית֑וֹ וּ֝מֹשֵׁ֗ל בְּכׇל־קִנְיָנֽוֹ׃
He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance:
He [Pharaoh] made him the lord of his home [viz. Genesis 41:40]; the ruler over all he possessed.
לֶאְסֹ֣ר שָׂרָ֣יו בְּנַפְשׁ֑וֹ וּזְקֵנָ֥יו יְחַכֵּֽם׃
to bind his princes at his pleasure; and teach his elders wisdom.
To bind [i.e., to endear him to] his princes at will and to make his elders wise.
וַיָּבֹ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל מִצְרָ֑יִם וְ֝יַעֲקֹ֗ב גָּ֣ר בְּאֶֽרֶץ־חָֽם׃
So Yisra᾽el came into Miżrayim; and Ya῾aqov sojourned in the land of Ḥam.
And Israel came to Egypt; Jacob lived in the land of Cham.
וַיֶּ֣פֶר אֶת־עַמּ֣וֹ מְאֹ֑ד וַ֝יַּעֲצִמֵ֗הוּ מִצָּרָֽיו׃
And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.
And He greatly increased His people and made them stronger than their oppressors.
הָפַ֣ךְ לִ֭בָּם לִשְׂנֹ֣א עַמּ֑וֹ לְ֝הִתְנַכֵּ֗ל בַּעֲבָדָֽיו׃
He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants.
He turned their [Egypt's] hearts to hate His people, to plot against His servants.
שָׁ֭לַח מֹשֶׁ֣ה עַבְדּ֑וֹ אַ֝הֲרֹ֗ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּחַר־בּֽוֹ׃
He sent Moshe his servant; and Aharon whom he had chosen.
He sent Moses, His servant; Aaron, whom He chose.
שָֽׂמוּ־בָ֭ם דִּבְרֵ֣י אֹתוֹתָ֑יו וּ֝מֹפְתִ֗ים בְּאֶ֣רֶץ חָֽם׃
They performed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ḥam.
He invested them with the words of His signs and wonders in the land of Cham.
שָׁ֣לַֽח חֹ֭שֶׁךְ וַיַּחְשִׁ֑ךְ וְלֹא־מָ֝ר֗וּ אֶת־[דְּבָרֽוֹ] (דבריו)׃
He sent darkness, and made it dark, and they did not rebel against his word.
He sent darkness and it was dark; they [His plagues] did not rebel against His word [(i.e., they came as commanded)].
הָפַ֣ךְ אֶת־מֵימֵיהֶ֣ם לְדָ֑ם וַ֝יָּ֗מֶת אֶת־דְּגָתָֽם׃
He turned their water into blood, and slew their fish.
He turned their waters to blood, and He killed their fish.
שָׁרַ֣ץ אַרְצָ֣ם צְפַרְדְּעִ֑ים בְּ֝חַדְרֵ֗י מַלְכֵיהֶֽם׃
Their land swarmed with frogs, in the chambers of their kings.
He made their land swarm with frogs in the [very] chambers of their kings.
אָ֭מַר וַיָּבֹ֣א עָרֹ֑ב כִּ֝נִּ֗ים בְּכׇל־גְּבוּלָֽם׃
He spoke, and there came swarms of gnats, and lice in all their borders.
He spoke and the mixed multitude came, lice in all their borders.
נָתַ֣ן גִּשְׁמֵיהֶ֣ם בָּרָ֑ד אֵ֖שׁ לֶהָב֣וֹת בְּאַרְצָֽם׃
He gave them hail for rain, and flaming fire in their land.
He made their rains hail, a fiery flame in their land.
וַיַּ֣ךְ גַּ֭פְנָם וּתְאֵנָתָ֑ם וַ֝יְשַׁבֵּ֗ר עֵ֣ץ גְּבוּלָֽם׃
He smote their vines also and their fig trees; and broke the trees of their country.
And it smote their vines and their figs, and it broke the wood of their borders.
אָ֭מַר וַיָּבֹ֣א אַרְבֶּ֑ה וְ֝יֶ֗לֶק וְאֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר׃
He spoke, and the swarming locust came, and the hopping locust without number,
He spoke and the locust came, and the beetle without number.
וַיֹּ֣אכַל כׇּל־עֵ֣שֶׂב בְּאַרְצָ֑ם וַ֝יֹּ֗אכַל פְּרִ֣י אַדְמָתָֽם׃
and they did eat up every plant in their land, and devoured the fruit of their ground.
And it consumed all the grass in their land and it ate [all] the fruit of their land.
וַיַּ֣ךְ כׇּל־בְּכ֣וֹר בְּאַרְצָ֑ם רֵ֝אשִׁ֗ית לְכׇל־אוֹנָֽם׃
Then he smote all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength.
And He smote all the first-born in their land, the first of all their strength.
וַֽ֭יּוֹצִיאֵם בְּכֶ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֑ב וְאֵ֖ין בִּשְׁבָטָ֣יו כּוֹשֵֽׁל׃
He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one who stumbled among their tribes.
And He took them [Israel] out with silver and gold, with no "stumbler" in its tribes.
שָׂמַ֣ח מִצְרַ֣יִם בְּצֵאתָ֑ם כִּֽי־נָפַ֖ל פַּחְדָּ֣ם עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃
Miżrayim was glad when they departed: for the fear of them had fallen on them.
Egypt rejoiced in their going out, for their fear had fallen upon them.
פָּרַ֣שׂ עָנָ֣ן לְמָסָ֑ךְ וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ לְהָאִ֥יר לָֽיְלָה׃
He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night.
He spread [over Israel] a cloud as a veil, and fire to light up the night.
שָׁ֭אַל וַיָּבֵ֣א שְׂלָ֑ו וְלֶ֥חֶם שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם יַשְׂבִּיעֵֽם׃
They asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with bread from heaven.
It [Israel] asked, and He brought the quail, and He sated them with the bread of heaven [the manna].
פָּ֣תַח צ֭וּר וַיָּז֣וּבוּ מָ֑יִם הָ֝לְכ֗וּ בַּצִּיּ֥וֹת נָהָֽר׃
He opened the rock, and the water gushed out; it ran in the dry places like a river.
He opened a rock and waters flowed; they flowed as a river in the dry land.
כִּֽי־זָ֭כַר אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר קׇדְשׁ֑וֹ אֶֽת־אַבְרָהָ֥ם עַבְדּֽוֹ׃
For he remembered his holy promise to Avraham his servant.
For He remembered His holy word, [that He had spoken to] Abraham His servant [viz. Genesis 15:14, 17)].
וַיּוֹצִ֣א עַמּ֣וֹ בְשָׂשׂ֑וֹן בְּ֝רִנָּ֗ה אֶת־בְּחִירָֽיו׃
And he brought out his people with joy, and his chosen ones with gladness:
And He took out His people with joy; with song, His chosen ones.
וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לָ֭הֶם אַרְצ֣וֹת גּוֹיִ֑ם וַעֲמַ֖ל לְאֻמִּ֣ים יִירָֽשׁוּ׃
and gave them the lands of the nations: and they seized the labour of the peoples;
And He gave them the lands of the nations and caused them to inherit the toil of the peoples.
בַּעֲב֤וּר**׀** יִשְׁמְר֣וּ חֻ֭קָּיו וְתוֹרֹתָ֥יו יִנְצֹ֗רוּ הַֽלְלוּ־יָֽהּ׃{פ}
that they might observe his statutes, and keep his Torot. Haleluya!
So that they keep His statutes and heed His laws, Hallelukah!
