To the chief Musician for the sons of Qoraĥ, A Maskil.
For the conductor, of the sons of Korach, a maskil.
We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us, what work Thou didst in their days, in the times of old:
O G d, we heard it [(the following prophecy)] with our ears, our fathers told us thereof, the deed that You wrought in their days, the days of yore.
how Thou didst drive out nations with Thy hand, and didst plant them; how Thou didst batter the peoples, and cast them out.
You drove out the nations with [the strength of] Your hand and planted them [the children of Israel, in their stead]. You broke the [seven] nations and sent them forth.
For they did not get the land in possession by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them: but Thy right hand, and Thy arm, and the light of Thy countenance, because Thou didst favourably accept them.
For it was not with their sword that they inherited the land, and their arms did not help them. But it was Your right hand, and Your arm, and the light of Your countenance — because You desired them.
Thou art my King, O God: command deliverances for Ya῾aqov.
You are my king, O G d; [now, too,] command the salvation of Jacob.
Through Thee will we push down our enemies: through Thy name will we tread those under who rise up against us.
With You [(Your aid)] we will smite our foes. With Your name we will trample those who rise against us.
For I trust not in my bow, nor shall my sword save me.
For I will not trust in my bow, and my sword will not help me.
But Thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put to shame those who hated us.
For You saved us from our foes, and You shamed our enemies.
In God we have gloried all the day long, and we praise Thy name for ever. (Sela.)
We uttered G d's praises all the day, and we will always give thanks to Your eternal name.
Yet, Thou hast cast off, and put us to shame; and Thou goest not forth with our armies.
Even if You forsook us and shamed us and did not go out among our ranks, [(we would give thanks to Your eternal name)].
Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they who hate us take plunder for themselves.
You have turned us back before the foe and our enemies have taken spoil for themselves.
Thou hast given us like sheep to be eaten: and hast scattered us among the nations.
You have made us as sheep to be eaten and scattered us among the nations.
Thou sellest Thy people for no great gain, and hast not put high their prices.
You have sold Your people for no wealth and did not take much in their exchange.
Thou dost make us a taunt to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to those round about us.
You have made us an object of shame to our neighbors, of mockery and insult to those around us.
Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.
You have made us a parable among the nations, an object of head-nodding [in mockery] among the peoples.
My confusion is before me all the day, and the shame of my face has covered me,
My humiliation is constantly before me and the shame of my face covers me
For the voice of him that taunts and blasphemes; by reason of the enemy and avenger.
because of the voice of the shamer and reviler [(who shames and reviles me)] because of the [pursuit of the] foe and the avenger.
All this is come upon us; yet we have not forgotten Thee, nor have we been false to Thy covenant.
All this has come upon us and [still] we have not forgotten You and we have not betrayed Your covenant.
Our heart is not turned back, nor have our steps declined from Thy way;
Our hearts have not turned back, and our feet have not strayed from Your path.
though Thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.
And [even] when You trod us down in a place of serpents and covered us over with darkness,
If we had forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
Did we forget the name of our G d and spread our palms to a strange god?
would not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.
[If we had,] would not G d seek this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
But for Thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are reckoned as sheep for the slaughter.
But [You know that] for You we were killed all the day; we were accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
Awake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever.
Awake! Why do You sleep, O L rd? Arise! Do not forsake us eternally.
Why dost Thou hide Thy face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?
Why do You hide Your face? [Why do You] forget our pain and tribulation?
For our soul is bowed down to the dust: our belly cleaves to the earth.
For our souls have been bent to the dust, our stomachs forced to the ground.
ק֭וּמָֽה עֶזְרָ֣תָה לָּ֑נוּ וּ֝פְדֵ֗נוּ לְמַ֣עַן חַסְדֶּֽךָ׃{פ}
Arise for our help, and redeem us for the sake of Thy steadfast love.
Arise and help us, and redeem us [(not on the strength of our deeds, but)] for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
