וַיַּעֲבֹר צָפוֹנָה. וַיַּעֲבֹר אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן, וְהָלְכוּ לִצְפוֹן עֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן, אֶל הַגִּלְעָד:
And crossed northward. They crossed the Yardein and travelled north in trans-Yardein to Gilod.
כִּי אָמְרוּ פְּלִיטֵי אֶפְרַיִם אַתֶּם גִּלְעָד. פְּחוּתִים שֶׁבְּאֶפְרַיִם הָיוּ מְבַזִּים אֶת הַגִּלְעָד, וְאוֹמְרִים לָהֶם: מָה אַתֶּם גִּלְעָד חֲשׁוּבִים בְּתוֹךְ אֶפְרַיִם וּבְתוֹךְ מְנַשֶּׁה, כֵּן תִּרְגֵּם יוֹנָתָן:
Since the contemptibles of Ephraim had said, "What are you ,Gilod?" The lowliest in Ephraim would mock Gilod, saying, "Of what significance are you, Gilod, among Ephraim and among Menasheh?" This is Targum Yonasan's interpretation.
וַיִּלְכֹּד גִּלְעָד אֶת מַעְבְּרוֹת וְגוֹ׳. הָיוּ שׁוֹמְרִים בִּמְקוֹם הַמַּעְבָּרוֹת:
The Gilodites captured the Yardein crossings. They posted sentries at the crossing areas.
אֱמָר נָא שִׁבֹּלֶת. שִׁבֹּלֶת הַנָּהָר הַזֶּה אֶעֱבֹר:
Say Shiboles please. May I cross this river flow?¹

וְלֹא יָכִין לְדַבֵּר כֵּן. שֶׁהָיוּ מְגַמְגְּמִים בִּלְשׁוֹנָם:
They were not proficient in proper pronunciation. They were speech deficient.
