And it happened in the days when the Judges judged, that there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the fields of Moab; he with his wife and two sons.

Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bet-leĥem in Yehuda went to sojourn in the country of Mo᾽av, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

And it was, in the days of the rule of the judges [i.e., before the reign of King Saul, when the people were led by judges, the judge at that particular time being Ivtzan [(Boaz, viz. Judges 12:8)], that there was a hunger in the land. And there went a man from Bethlehem in Judah to dwell in the fields of Moav, he, his wife, and his two sons.

The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was Naomi, the name[s] of his two sons, were Machlon and Kilyon, Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah; they came to the Moabite country and remained there.

And the name of the man was Elimelekh, and the name of his wife No῾omi, and the name of his two sons, Maĥlon and Kilyon, Efratites from Bet-leĥem in Yehuda. And they came into the country of Mo᾽av, and remained there.

The name of the man was Elimelech; the name of his wife was Na'ami; and the names of his two sons were Machlon and Kilyon, men of eminence, from Bethlehem in Judah. And they came to the fields of Moav, and they were [i.e., they remained] there.

Elimelech, Naomi’s husband died, and she was left with her two sons.

And Elimelekh, No῾omi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

And Elimelech died, the husband of Na'ami [("a man dying only to his wife")]; and she and her two sons remained.

They married Maobite women, one of whom was named Orpah, and the name of the second Rus, and they lived there about ten years.

And they took wives for themselves of the women of Mo᾽av; the name of the one was ῾Orpa, and the name of the other Rut: and they dwelled there about ten years.

And they took for themselves Moavite wives, the name of one being Arpah, and the name of the other, Ruth [(the daughter of Eglon, king of Moav)], and they dwelt there about ten years.

They both died; Machlon and Kilyon, the woman was bereft of her two sons and of her husband.

And Maĥlon and Kilyon died, both of them; so that the woman was bereft of her two sons and her husband.

And there died also [(after they had lost their wealth and their cattle had died)] the two of them, Machlon and Kilyon. And the woman remained [bereft] of her two children and of her husband.

She then arose with her daughters-in-law, in order to return from the fields of Moab for she had heard in the fields of Moab that Adonoy had cared for His people to give them food.

Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Mo᾽av: for she had heard in the country of Mo᾽av that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread.

And she and her daughters-in-law arose and she returned from the fields of Moav; for she heard in the field of Moav that the L-rd had remembered His people to give them bread.

She left the place where she had been, accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, and they took the road to return to the land of Judah.

So she went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they took the road to return to the land of Yehuda.

And she left the place where she was [("the place" was bereft of its splendor with the leaving of the righteous one, Na'ami)], and her two daughters-in-law with her. And they walked on the way to return to the land of Judah.

Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return, each of you to her mother’s home; may Adonoy deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me.

And No῾omi said to her two daughters in law, Go, return each of you to her mother’s house: the Lord deal loyally with you, as you have dealt with the dead, and with me.

And Na'ami said to her two daughters-in-law: Go, return, each of you, to the house of her mother. May the L-rd do with you lovingkindess, as you have done with the dead and with me.

May Adonoy grant you that you may find [security] rest each in the home of her [new] husband”; she kissed them and they wept aloud.

The Lord grant you that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

May the L-rd grant that you find rest, each in the house of her husband. And she kissed them, and they raised their voices and cried.

And they said to her, “We will return with you to your people.”

And they said to her, No, we will return with thee to thy people.

And they said to her: But we shall return with you to your people.

And Naomi said, “Turn back my daughters, why should you come with me? Am I likely to have more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

And No῾omi said, Turn back, my daughters: why will you go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?

And Na'ami said: Return, my daughters. Why should you go with me? Do I yet have sons in my womb who can be to you as husbands?

“Turn back, my daughters, go [your way], for I am too old to have a husband. Even if I could say: ‘I have yet hope,’ even if I were to have a husband tonight—and even if I were to bear sons—

turn back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, even if I should have a husband tonight, and should bear sons;

Return, my daughters, go. For I am too old to wed a man [(and have sons by him for you to marry.)] For [even if] I said: There is [still] hope for me [(to bear)]; even if I were this night with a man [(and conceived sons by him)]; even if I had [already] borne sons —

Would you wait for them until they were grown to manhood? Would you shut yourselves in for them, denying yourselves to marry another?—No, my daughters, my distress is great on your account, for against me is directed the hand of Adonoy.”

would you tarry for them till they were grown? would you, for them, refrain from having husbands? no, my daughters; for it grieves me much for your sakes that the hand of the Lord is gone out against me.

Would you wait for them until they are grown? Would you restrict yourselves for them not to wed a man? No, my daughters, for my lot is far more bitter than yours; for the hand of the L-rd [i.e., pestilence (viz. Exodus 9:3)] has gone forth against me.

They wept loudly again, Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Rus did cling to her.

And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and ῾Orpa kissed her mother in law; but Rut held fast to her.

And they lifted their voices and cried even more. And Arpah kissed her mother-in-law, and Ruth cleaved to her.

And she [Naomi] said to her, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god; return along with your sister-in-law.”

And she said, Behold, thy sister in law has gone back to her people, and to her gods: go back after thy sister in law.

And she said; Behold, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.

But Rus said, “Do not urge me to desert you, to turn away from you. For wherever you go, I shall go, where you lodge, I will lodge, your people are my people, and your God, is my God.

And Rut said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for wherever thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

And Ruth said: Do not entreat me to forsake you, to turn back from after you. For whither you go, shall I go; where you lie down, shall I lie down; your people are my people; and your G-d is my G-d.

Where you die, I will die and there I shall be buried; so may Adonoy do to me—and even more—if anything but death separate me from you.”

where thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part thee and me.

Where you die, shall I die, and there shall I be buried. Thus, [(as He has begun to do by killing my husband and by impoverishing me)], may the L-rd [continue to] do to me, and thus may He add if [aught other than] death divide between me and you.

[And when] she saw that she was determined to go with her, she refrained from further discussion with her.

When she saw that she was steadfastly minded to go with her, then she left off speaking to her.

And she saw that she was intent on going with her, and she left off speaking with her [to dissuade her].

So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem; and on their arrival in Bethlehem the whole city was astir on their account, and the women remarked, “Is this [really] Naomi.”

So the two of them went on until they came to Bet-leĥem. And it came to pass, when they were come to Bet-leĥem, that all the city was astir at their arrival, and they said, Is this No῾omi?

And the two of them went [(Ruth, once she decided to become a proselyte, being equated with Na'ami)], until they came to Bethlehem. And it was, when they came to Bethlehem, that the entire city was in a tumult over them [(having gathered for the burial of Boaz's wife, who had died just that day)]. And they said: Is this Na'ami [(who was wont to travel in panoply! See what has become of her for having left Eretz Yisrael!)]

She said to them, “Do not call me Naomi [sweet or pleasant] but call me Mara [embittered one], for most bitterly has God dealt with me.

And she said to them, Call me not No῾omi, call me Mara: for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

And she said to them: Do not call me Na'ami [("pleasantness")]; call me Mara [("bitterness")], for the Almighty has sorely embittered me.

I had gone forth full but Adonoy has brought me back, empty; why call me Naomi, when Adonoy has testified against me and the Almighty [has brought] catastrophe upon me?”

I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty: why then do you call me No῾omi, seeing the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

I went away full [(with wealth and children)], and the L-rd returned me empty. Why do you call me Na'ami when the L-rd has testified against me [(as having transgressed)], and the Almighty has brought evil against me?

Thus did Naomi return, and Rus, the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, they who had returned—from the fields of Moab and they arrived in Bethlehem at the start of the barley harvest.

So No῾omi returned, and Rut the Mo᾽avite woman, her daughter in law, with her, who returned out of the country of Mo᾽av: and they came to Bet-leĥem at the beginning of the barley harvest.

And Na'ami returned, and Ruth, the Moavitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned from the fields of Moav. And they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of the barley harvest [(the omer harvest)].
