May our prayer be sweet before You

as a burnt-offering and as a sacrifice.¹⁵

footnotes: ¹⁵ The burnt-offering refers to the עוֹלַת הַתָּמִיד , the daily communal burnt-offering, while sacrifice refers to the מוּסַף , the additional offerings of the Festivals.— Iyun Tefiloh According to Dover Shalom these two types of offerings can be compared to two kinds of prayers. The truly pious Jew is concerned only with serving his Creator and his prayers are offered entirely to God. He asks nothing for himself. His prayers are similar to a burnt-offering which is consumed in its entirety on God’s altar. Not every Jew is capable of such a lofty degree of Divine service. Many serve God but are conscious of their own personal needs and desires. Their prayer is thus similar to a שְׁלָמִים , peace offering, of which only part is consumed on the altar, the owner also being permitted to eat and enjoy part of it. We pray that both kinds of prayers be pleasing and acceptable to God, as were the sacrifices on the altar.

Please, Merciful One, in Your abundant mercy

return Your Divine Presence to Zion, Your city,

and the order of the [Temple] Service

to Jerusalem.

And may our eyes behold

Your merciful return to Zion.

And there we will serve You reverently

as in the days of old,

and in earlier years.

Blessed are You, Adonoy,

You alone, in reverence do we serve.

May it be Your will

Adonoy, our God and the God of our fathers,

that this blessing

which You have commanded us

to bless Your people Israel,

be a perfect blessing;

that there be in it neither

stumbling nor iniquity

from now, forever.

Kohanim

Your holy people, as it is said.

Blessed are You, Adonoy,

our God, King of the universe,

Who sanctified us

with the holiness of Aaron

and commanded us

to bless His people, Israel,
