וּשְׁמַע בַּר שָׁאוּל אֲרֵי מִית אַבְנֵר בְּחֶבְרוֹן וְאִתְרַשְׁלוּ יְדוֹהִי וְכָל יִשְׂרָאֵל אִתְבְּהִילוּ:
When the son of Saul heard that Abner had died at Hebron, his hands became inactive and all Israel was terrified.
וּתְרֵין גַבְרִין רַבָּנֵי רֵישֵׁי מַשִׁרְיָן הֲווֹ עִם בַּר שָׁאוּל שׁוּם חַד בַּעֲנָא וְשׁוּם תִּנְיָנָא רֶכֶב בְּנֵי רִמוֹן דְמִבְּאֵרוֹת בְּנֵי בִנְיָמִין אֲרֵי אַף בְּאֵרוֹת מִתְחַשְׁבָא עַל דְבֵית בִּנְיָמִין:
Now there were two men, commanders – heads – of two camps with the son of Saul. The name of the one was Baanah, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Rimmon, a man of Benjamin from Beeroth – for Beeroth also is reckoned to the House of Benjamin.
וַעֲרַקוּ אֱנַשׁ בְּאֵרוֹת לְגִתָּיִם וַהֲווֹ תַמָן דַיָרִין עַד יוֹמָא הָדֵין:
And the men of Beeroth fled to Gittaim, and have been inhabitants there to this day.
וְלִיהוֹנָתָן בַּר שָׁאוּל בְּרָא לָקֵי בִּתְרֵין רִגְלוֹהִי בַּר חָמֵשׁ שְׁנִין הֲוָה כַּד אָתַת בְּשׂוּרַת שָׁאוּל וִיהוֹנָתָן מִיִזְרְעֶאל וּנְטַלְתֵּיהּ תּוּרְבַנְתֵּיהּ וְאַפֵּיכַת וַהֲוָה בְּאִתְבָּעֲיוּתָה לְמֶעֶרַק וּנְפַל וַחֲגָר וּשְׁמֵיהּ מְפִיבֹשֶׁת:
Jonathan, the son of Saul, had a son suffering in both his feet. He had been five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. And his nurse took him up and turned away, but in her haste to flee he fell and became cripple. And his name was Mephibosheth.
וַאֲזַלוּ בְּנֵי רִמוֹן דְמִבְּאֵרוֹת רֵכָב וּבַעֲנָה וַאֲתוֹ כְּמֵיחַם יוֹמָא לְבֵית אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת וְהוּא שָׁכִיב יַת שִׁנַת מַלְכַיָא:
Now the sons of Rimmon who was from Beeroth, Rechab and Baanah, set out, and about the heat of the day they came to the house of Ishbosheth, while he was taking a kings’ sleep.
וְאִינוּן אֲתוֹ עַד גוֹ בֵיתָא כְּזַבְּנֵי חִטִין וּמְחוֹהִי בִּסְטַר יַרְכֵיהּ וְרֵכַב וּבַעֲנָה אֲחוֹהִי אִשְׁתֵּיזָבוּ:
And behold, they came into the midst of the house as buyers of wheat, and they struck him in the place of his loins. Then Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped.
וַאֲתוֹ לְבֵיתָא וְהוּא שָׁכִיב עַל עַרְסֵיהּ בְּאִדְרוֹן בֵּית מִשְׁכְּבֵיהּ וּמְחוֹהִי וְקַטְלוֹהִי וְאַעְדִיאוּ יַת רֵישֵׁיהּ וּנְסִיבוּ יַת רֵישֵׁיהּ וַאֲזַלוּ בְּאוֹרַח מֵישְׁרָא כָּל לַיְלְיָא:
When they came to the house, as he was sleeping on his bed in his bedchamber, they struck him and killed him and cut off his head. And they took his head and went the way of the valley all night.
וְאַיְתִיאוּ יַת רֵישׁ אִישׁ בּוֹשֶׁת לְוַת דָוִד לְחֶבְרוֹן וַאֲמַרוּ לְמַלְכָּא הָא רֵישׁ אִישׁ בֹּשֶׁת בַּר שָׁאוּל בְּעֵיל דְבָבָךְ דִבְעָא לְמִקְטְלָךְ וַעֲבַד יְיָ לְרִבּוֹנִי מַלְכָּא פּוּרְעֲנוּתָא יוֹמָא הָדֵין מִשָׁאוּל וּמִזַרְעֵיהּ:
They brought the head of Ish bosheth to David at Hebron. And they said to the king, “Behold the head of Ish bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought to kill you. The LORD took revenge on Saul and on his seed this day for my lord the king.”
וַאֲתֵיב דָוִד יַת רֵכָב וְיַת בַּעֲנָה אֲחוּהִי בְּנֵי רִמוֹן דְמִבְּאֵרוֹת וַאֲמַר לְהוֹן קַיָם הוּא יְיָ דִי פְרַק יַת נַפְשִׁי מִכָּל עָקָא:
But David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon who was from Beeroth, “As the LORD is the existing One, who has redeemed my life out of every affliction,
אֲרֵי דְחַוֵי לִי לְמֵימַר הָא מִית שָׁאוּל וְהוּא הֲוָה כִּמְבַשֵׂר בְּעֵינֵי נַפְשֵׁיהּ וַאֲחָדִית בֵּיהּ וּקְטַלְתֵּיהּ בְּצִקְלָג דַהֲוָה מְדַמִי לְמִתַּן לֵיהּ מַתְּנַת בְּסוֹרָתֵיהּ:
when one told me, saying, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ and he was like one bringing good news in the sight of his own soul, I seized him and killed him at Ziklag, while he was imagining me to give him a present for his good news.
אַף אֲרֵי גַבְרִין רַשִׁיעַיָא קְטַלוּ יַת גְבַר זַכַּאי בְּבֵיתֵיהּ עַל שִׁווּיֵה וּכְעַן הֲלָא אִתְבַּע יַת דְמֵיהּ מִיֶדְכוֹן וַאֲפַלֵי יַתְכוֹן מִן אַרְעָא:
How much more, when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house upon his couch, shall I not now require his blood from your hand, and remove you from the land?”
וּפַקֵיד דָוִד יַת עוּלֵמַיָא וְקַטְלִינוּן וּקְצִיצוּ יַת יְדֵיהוֹן וְיַת רַגְלֵיהוֹן וּצְלָבוּ עַל בְּרֵכָתָא בְּחֶבְרוֹן וְיַת רֵישׁ אִישׁ בּוֹשֶׁת נְסִיבוּ וּקְבָרוּ בְּקִבְרָא דְאַבְנֵר בְּחֶבְרוֹן:
And David commended his young men, and they killed them. They cut off their hands and feet, and hanged them beside the pool at Hebron. But they took the head of Ish bosheth, and buried it in the tomb of Abner at Hebron.
