וְהֶקֵּף אַמָּה אַחַת סְבִיב מְקוֹם הַמַּעֲרָכָה, הוּא מְקוֹם הִלּוּךְ רַגְלֵי הַכֹּהֲנִים מִבְּלִי תֵּת שָׁם שׁוּם דָּבָר ¹ כְּלָל. שֶׁיִּהְיֶה מָקוֹם פָּנוּי לְהִלּוּךְ הַכֹּהֲנִים, שֶׁלֹּא יִכָּוּוּ בַּגֶּחָלִים, אוֹ יִכָּשְׁלוּ בְּנִתְחֵי הַקָּרְבָּנוֹת, אוֹ בְּגִזְרֵי הָעֵצִים.

There was an area 2 cubits wide on all sides of the 24 cubit square described in the previous section. One cubit of this space was designated as the area where kohanim would walk. It was a totally empty area,¹ to allow the kohanim to walk freely without being burnt or tripping over portions of the sacrificial animals or pieces of wood.
