Sefaria Community Translation

A wise son is one who practices according to the laws of wisdom. And the laws of wisdom are difficult for the nature of the heart to accept and practice, because the images of desires will rise on the soil of the soul like a cloud. The soul must be cleansed by the moralizer who disciplines his son and informs him of the punishments of Hashem and the evil that leads to deviating from the laws of wisdom. While he is a youth, he should be disciplined in the tribe until he is convinced to accept the laws of wisdom, because fear is what disciplines the soul until the images of wisdom rule in its heart. When he is a wise son, it is a sign that the moralizer of his father has acted in him. And the son who has not heard rebuke from his father from his days is not only an unwise son, but he is a scoundrel who mocks the laws of wisdom.

Sefaria Community Translation

(Proverbs 13:2): A man who keeps his mouth shut will eat well -

Sefaria Community Translation

It was already said above (Proverbs 12:14): A man who keeps his mouth shut will be satisfied with good, and there he comes to a different consideration.

Sefaria Community Translation

And here it comes to say that his mouth is the tree of knowledge of good and evil. We have already explained that the mouth alludes to wisdom, the tongue alludes to understanding, and the tongue alludes to understanding (and they all come to the same conclusion (Proverbs 18:20): A man's mouth... and the fruit of his lips... is in the hand of the tongue..., see there).

ורוצה לומר, שפרי הפה הוא פרי עץ הדעת טוב ורע, כי בחכמה יש שני דרכים, למשל גאוה וענוה, רחמים ואכזריות, וכדומה, וצריך להנהיגם בחכמה, והאיש המשתמש בהחכמה לטוב יאכל את הטוב מן העץ;

Sefaria Community Translation

And he wants to say that the fruit of the mouth is the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because in wisdom there are two paths, for example pride and humility, mercy and cruelty, and the like, and they must be guided by wisdom, and the man who uses wisdom for good will eat the good from the tree;

Sefaria Community Translation

But the traitor, who uses his qualities contrary to the path of wisdom, will eat poison from the fruit of his mouth, and will use all his qualities for evil by the serpent that tempts him to evil, and this is what is called a traitor, for the traitor does not keep the words of his mouth and his promise, and in a parable, he does not use the path of wisdom as it was imprinted upon him.

Sefaria Community Translation

And we have already explained that giving is a comprehensive matter in all that is appropriate, whether in terms of money or in terms of measure.

Sefaria Community Translation

And Lakman (ibid.) already explained the difference between wisdom, understanding, and knowledge, which are implied by the mouth, lips, and tongue, in what he said:

Sefaria Community Translation
  • Whoever breaks a man's mouth will satisfy his stomach,
Sefaria Community Translation
  • And "the fruit of his lips shall be satisfied,"
Sefaria Community Translation
  • Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit,

ש:

Sefaria Community Translation

that:

  • החכמה היא עץ הדעת טוב ורע, ומזה תשבע בטנו, אם טוב ואם רע, כפי ההכנה;
Sefaria Community Translation
  • Wisdom is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and from it our stomachs will be filled, whether good or evil, according to the preparation;
  • והדעת היא התבואה הנגמרת, כי היא הידיעה הברורה, וממנה ישבע לחם לשובע;
Sefaria Community Translation
  • And knowledge is the grain that is finished, because it is the clear knowledge, and from it one will be satisfied with bread for the full;
Sefaria Community Translation
  • But the tongue, which she understood, in which she would distinguish between truth and falsehood, does not depend on good and evil (for good and evil are only in the public eye), only on which life and death depend, and it is the tree of life, and those who love it will eat of its fruit and live forever.

Sefaria Community Translation

And in the way of the simple, first (Proverbs 12:14) he spoke with the fruit of his mouth, speaking in Torah and prayer, and then he spoke with the speech of one who speaks in the way of the earth:

  • שצריך לשמור דיבורו ולא יחלל מוצא שפתיו, ואז יאכל טוב, כי יהיה נאמן ויאכל מעמלו, ועל-כל למעלה אמר ישבע ופה אמר יאכל, שהשביעה תציין שכר הנפש, כמו (ישעיהו נח יא): והשביע בצחצחות נפשך, והאכילה מציין שיהיה לו לאכול בטוב;
Sefaria Community Translation
  • One must guard his speech and not profane the words of his lips, and then he will eat well, because he will be faithful and will eat from his labor. Above all, he said he will be satisfied, and here he said he will eat, because satisfaction indicates the reward of the soul, as in (Isaiah 11:11): And he will be satisfied with the purity of your soul, and eating indicates that he will eat well;
Sefaria Community Translation
  • And the traitor, who does not guard his faith, which is the traitor's fence, his soul will eat poison.

Sefaria Community Translation

He who guards his mouth, opens his lips, there is a difference between a mouth and a tongue, because the tongue is the external speech, and the mouth is the internal speech in wisdom, and there is a difference between a creator and a guard, because the creator is more than the one who guards what he created with constant guarding, and illustrates that the mouth and lips are like a wall in form around the soul, and they close it off so that its enemies and enemies may not come near it, and it is not only the lips that need to be guarded, which are the external walls that the enemy stands around, but the external accent that speaks without the mind must be guarded, because one must also guard his mouth, and even the speech in wisdom must be under extra guard, as it is written that Hashem is in heaven and you are on earth, therefore your words will be few, and in this one guards his soul, because it has a wall in form around it, but he who opens his lips, which are the external wall, is a threat to him, and as explained in my book, its joy is against the strength and the fortress, and R"l also in Torah and wisdom must guard the openings His mouth, and by it he will preserve his soul, but he who opens his lips to speak evil and gossip, it is a curse to his body as well:

Sefaria Community Translation

From desire and not his soul is lazy, the lazy person is the opposite of the diligent person who does work with agility and diligence, and here is the lazy person who does not want to toil in work. Do not say that he does not have desire, because in truth his soul desires more than any other person, because desire will be stronger in someone who has no way to fulfill his desire, only that his hands, feet, and limbs do not obey his soul to fulfill its will, in such a way that his limbs do not agree with his lustful soul, because they desire in idleness, he will kill his soul, as it is written: The desire of the lazy person will kill him because his hands will not do it, and he wanted to say: The lazy person's soul is from desire, and there is none, but the diligent, although they tire their bodies with work, their souls will be satisfied, because they have all their desires, and the lazy person is likened to engaging in wisdom, his spiritual soul is from desire and there is none, and it will die an eternal death at his hands, unserved. For his spiritual soul. And the diligent, although his body is weary, his spiritual soul will be nourished with the fat of the house of the Lord and will drink of the eternal stream:

Sefaria Community Translation

A righteous man will hate a false word. The foundation of justice is built on the love of truth. If his heart inclines to falsehood, he will not do justice, but will pervert justice, hear slander and gossip, and condemn his fellow man to his duty, all of which is against justice. Therefore, the righteous man who does justice will hate a false word. And the evil man who does the opposite of justice, will love lying, shame his fellow man's odor in his absence, and slander him to his face by gossiping and slandering him and slandering him with false words. It should be interpreted that the righteous man will shame and slander the wicked man because he hates a false thing, and therefore he will hate the wicked man who lies:

Sefaria Community Translation

Righteousness will make a perfect path, and wickedness will pervert sin. Here, the distinction is between a pure path and sin, and wickedness and righteousness, and a perversion and a perversion. A pure path is one whose path is pure in nature and does not incline to lust and deficiency, and there is no deficiency in his path that deficiency and sin are the opposite of innocence. And here, a pure path will not be perverted by wickedness, because his path is pure in nature and he corrects his path according to intellectual manners to do justice and justice as reason requires and to abstain from evil. However, as long as he does not walk in righteousness, that is, the commandments between a person and a place that are not required by reason, he will already depart from innocence by not knowing the right path, because the intellect cannot judge about everything what is good and what is bad. Only righteousness will create a pure path, and if he walks in righteousness, it will create innocence, and he will be a righteous and pure person. Likewise, righteousness without innocence is not safe from an obstacle, because then he will do righteousness for the sake of external appeals, and when he finds comfort and benefit in the opposite, he will deviate from it. And there must be a path to completion, and then righteousness will create it.

Sefaria Community Translation

And condemnation will distort sin. Whoever has sin in him, meaning a deficiency that inclines to his desires, which is the boundary of sin that is from the side of desire, then condemnation will rule to distort and distort his path:

Sefaria Community Translation

(7-8) Some become rich, etc. A sinner, etc. There are those who, to the eye, appear to be getting rich, but after intellectual examination, in reality, he has nothing. Likewise, sometimes it appears to the eye that someone is becoming poor and has exhausted his wealth, and in reality he has great wealth. This is because the possession of wealth is not a real possession, but an imaginary possession, just as a madman would say, "This is my house and this is my possession," as Maimonides says in "Teaching the Confused," to the point that what we call rich is someone who has many possessions, but an imaginary vanity, because there is no real connection between the possessions and the one who buys them. Sometimes the wealth is lost in a bad matter during his life, and in any case, they leave it to others to dream of when they die, until he only becomes rich according to appearances, and in reality he has nothing, because it is not a possession that is attached to his soul. But whoever scatters his wealth for charity and kindness and buys with it The integrity of his soul, which is the root of the eternally living man, is true wealth, and this impoverished man has great wealth reserved for eternity in the world of souls, and it is true wealth and great and very great eternal wealth. He explains that the ransom of a man's soul is his wealth, the root of wealth is if he ransoms his spiritual soul, if he gives the poor the condition to redeem his soul from corruption, and in this the ruler did not hear a rebuke, he will not be angry with the ruler who comes to take the ransom of his soul from him to revive him in eternal life, because he will give it to him with great joy:

Sefaria Community Translation

(Proverbs 13:9): The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out - The light is the very light, like the light of the sun that always shines and does not need oil or a wick; and the candle is what is made into a lamp by oil and a wick.

Sefaria Community Translation
  • The righteous, their souls will shine with "an everlasting, eternal light, and (Psalms 77:11): Light is spread out for the righteous, and they do not need a lamp, which is the body, because the spiritual soul will forever rejoice in the spiritual light, and this will always rejoice, as it is said (Psalms 77:11): And the upright in heart will rejoice, (Psalms 22:11): Rejoice in the Lord.
Sefaria Community Translation
  • But the wicked, the light of their material success is only in this world, as long as the candle and wick exist, meaning, the entire life of the body, and after the oil and wick are consumed - the candle will burn out, and their success will be lost.

Sefaria Community Translation

And this is also attributed to what is said (Proverbs 13:8): A man's wealth is the ransom of his soul, for it is necessary to revive the soul, which is a perpetual light, not the body and the lamp of its success which will fade away; and this rich man, the physical one, has nothing.

Sefaria Community Translation

Only with malice will one give a matzah. I have already explained that there malice comes to the one who deliberately disagrees with the laws of wisdom and truth in public and does not submit to the words of the sages, as it is written, "And the soul that does it with malice will not listen to the priest." There is a difference between a matzah and a quarrel, which matzah is the great quarrel that is close to beating and war. Now, when a quarrel arises and differences of opinion arise among the people, they will not come to the matzah if they consult, that is, they will gather and consult on a path of advice as to which path is best, and each one will express his opinion, and the decision between the opinions will be according to the laws of wisdom that they received from their rabbis. After the advice, they will see whose words are founded on wisdom and accept that advice. And it is written, "And those who consult wisdom," if they consult, they will follow the laws of wisdom and so they will do. And the matter will not come to the matzah only if there is malice that vehemently disagrees with the laws of wisdom and truth, for then there is no decision and advice will not be of any use, and then it comes to the matzah. Matzah, like the ice that melted and divided the laws of wisdom and poured out on Hashem in the assembly of Korah:

Fat wealth will diminish, also says someone who has great wealth, if he follows vanity, his wealth will diminish, because wealth requires effort and care to add to it, and if its owners follow vanity, their wealth will be scattered and not added to, and it will diminish each time until it is exhausted. However, even someone who does not have wealth, but he strives and gathers it by hand, who does not scatter, but gathers it and adds little by little, and gathers it with his hands and with his labor, it will increase and he will come to possess great wealth. And this is a parable about the business of Torah: Even the great sage who has accumulated much wisdom, if he follows vanity, his wealth will decrease and he will forget his Torah, but he who studies and strives to add to his wisdom every day will increase and become wiser in his later years:

Sefaria Community Translation

Long-awaited expectation sickens the heart and the tree of life is the coming of desire. There is a difference between expectation and hope and desire. The one who hopes hopes for something and has no promise that his desire will certainly come, but the one who hopes has a promise and is certain that the thing he hopes for will come, and the one who desires does not have any hope either. He only desires the thing and has no hope that it will be obtained. He also said that if expectation lasts and does not come in the near future, but only in the distant future, it has already sickened his heart. Although it is certain that the thing will come, his heart is sick because it did not come sooner. When the stage of the one who desires is sick, and he is sick for which he has no cure since there is no hope at all, as the saying goes, lazy desire is a dead end. And so when the desire comes, which is something he did not hope for, it is like a tree of life that revives the soul of the one who desires:

He who despises a word will be punished, and he who fears a mitzvah will be punished, the ancients already differed, whether a person needs to fulfill all 313 mitzvot or is it enough to fulfill one mitzvah, and as in the verse "And she opened her mouth without a law," one said to one who did not learn even one mitzvah, and another said to one who did not fulfill even one mitzvah, and both are true, he must believe and be ready to fulfill all of Hashem's mitzvahs, and if he despises even one mitzvah, it is said of him that Hashem spoke in this, because in this he disbelieves in the entire Torah, and Azza He who despises a word will be punished, if he despises even the first word, punishments and punishments will come to him, indeed, someone who believes in the entire Torah and all of its mitzvahs, but has not come to him with only one mitzvah to fulfill, will already receive a reward as if he had fulfilled the entire Torah, because we know that if other mitzvahs come to him, he will fulfill them, and Z"s And he fears a mitzvah if he fears a mitzvah even though he has fulfilled only one mitzvah, He will be paid and receive a reward for all the Torah:

The Torah of a wise man is a source of life to avoid the pitfalls of death, as I have already explained above (10:11) that the path of wisdom is called the path of life and the opposite path of foolishness is the path of spiritual death, and whoever draws the water of wisdom and drinks from it will live forever, and the source from which the water flows is either by seeing the deeds of the righteous and his conduct, for the mouth of the righteous is a source of life, or by fearing Hashem, as the word of the Lord says (14:27), but there is a path of death opposite to it, the two pitfalls surrounding the soul to trap it in their net, and they are desires and evil traits, and to be saved from the pitfalls of death one must draw the water of life from the Torah of a wise man, that the wise man who has received all the laws of wisdom will study them in a thorough study and will make known all the rules and details of what the path of wisdom is and what the path of foolishness is. And the Torah of a wise man is that Torah is the study that is thorough in everything, and it is A source of life, from which those who draw know how to avoid the mines of death:

Good sense will grant grace, there is sense and good sense, sense is the power that an educated person has to penetrate everything with sudden knowledge and to judge things that are hidden from the power of wisdom and understanding, and also about things that have no sense of entry into them, such as the knowledge of Hashem and the spiritual and the like from scholars who are after nature, and that good sense is one who attains the Spirit of Hashem, which is above the human mind, which sometimes goes in a crooked way, but if he is accompanied by help from on high, he will truly understand and know everything by the Spirit of Hashem upon him, and that this sense comes mostly through grace to one who finds favor in the eyes of Hashem and Azzah and finds favor, and good sense in the eyes of Hashem and man, it is called a gift because it comes from above to one who finds favor, who then finds a good sense to be wise in the Spirit of Hashem, but one who precedes him good sense and anticipates the Spirit of Hashem according to His preparation, then will grant grace, does not find favor, only receives it in the way of giving, By good understanding, the Lord will bless him, as it says, "I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight." And he said, "Please show me your glory." And behold, whoever has good understanding and attains to the Spirit of Hashem will also drink from the fountain of life, and the Lord will grant him grace to know how to turn away from the pits of death by the help of Hashem from on high with His Holy Spirit. And the lesson of the scripture The law of the wise is a fountain of life, and also Good understanding will grant grace to turn away from the pits of death, but the path of steadfast traitors, those who betray the Lord and walk the path of death with their steadfast path. The steadfast is the hard place in which one will not work or sow, whether in a stream, or in the solid mountains, rocks and crags on which no soil suitable for sowing has come, and they will not drink from the water of life because they are not worthy to receive dew and rain, and likewise the path of traitors is not worthy to receive from the source of life:

Every naked man acts with knowledge, and a fool spreads a veil, I have already explained above (12:23) that the naked man has a veil of knowledge, that it is the nature of the naked man to cover his knowledge and not reveal to others what he knows, and yet every naked man acts with knowledge, he will not do anything out of doubt until he knows with clear knowledge whether his action is right and whether it is directed towards the goal, because this is the nature of cunning, so that he will not walk in darkness and in confusion, as the saying goes: The wisdom of the naked man understands his path, and as I explained there, and the fool is one who deviates from the laws of wisdom for the sake of his desires, even if he attains the laws of wisdom, he will cast doubts in them so that he can do as he desires, and he said there that the heart of fools is called a veil, which besides not covering it, he will call and publish it, and here he said that he will spread a veil like one who spreads a garment, that he will spread all the sides of his vision and do his action in darkness because of the veil spread over his ignorance:

A wicked angel will fall into evil. There is a difference between an angel and a messenger, in that the messenger is the one who goes and turns back to bring repentance. The wicked angel who does not fulfill his mission in the place he was sent, only spoils there and does not bring repentance as he was sent, like the spies who spoiled, fell into evil and were punished and died in a plague. And a faithful messenger who walks in faith and brings repentance in faith, heals the plague of the wicked angel, like Caleb and Joshua, and through the recommendation of the Supreme Soul, sent by Hashem from the upper world to walk here in the land of defilement and return what it sends. And the wicked angel who does not fulfill his mission and spoils here and is not willing to return what it sends, will fall into evil and the punishments of hell. And a faithful messenger who straightens his path and walks in truth and faith and will be like a messenger who returns to his master to say, "I have done everything you commanded me," brings healing, and the sun of righteousness and healing has risen for him in its wings:

The shame and disgrace of a moral violator. There is a difference between morality and rebuke. Rebuke is the argument in words and evidence of reason, and morality is the chastisement of the soul's strength through the terror of punishments and disorder, and disgrace is the reversal of honor. Here, the one who observes rebuke and is satisfied with the teaching that is taught to him according to reason will be honored, for he is the one who deserves honor, and the one who does not observe rebuke will not be honored. However, the one who violates morality, who also does not fear the punishments of Hashem and completely breaks the yoke, will not only not be honored, but will find shame and disgrace, so that he will lose his wealth and become a disgrace to his honor:

Desire becomes, informs that the fool is not gullible because he knows the laws of wisdom, and if it were not for the desire that compelled him, he would turn away from evil according to the laws of wisdom, but because delight becomes a guarantee for the soul, although there is no good or beneficial in desire, there is a guarantee for the animal soul, and he cannot overcome his desire because of the guarantee, because he chooses the guarantee over the good and beneficial, and therefore it is abominable that fools turn away from evil, because they want the guarantee:

He who walks with the wise will become wise. He who walks with the wise will learn from their deeds and their wisdom and will act according to the laws of wisdom, and he who associates with the foolish will break, because he will learn from them to pursue lust, and they will teach him folly and he will not know the laws of wisdom at all. And he said, "He who walks with the wise will be like a shepherd like a fool, for with the wise he will not have a companion, he will only follow them, and with the fools he will have a companion, for wisdom is difficult to learn, not so with fools. Also, a shepherd is like a fool in the matter of shepherding and leading them, although he may imagine that he is a shepherd and leading them in the end, according to Be the tail to the lions and do not be the head to the foxes:

Sinners will be pursued by evil, says the punishment for sins does not come from Hashem, because evil does not come from Him, only the evil they have done will pursue them relentlessly until it overtakes them, in such a way that the punishment is continuous with the nature of evil itself, he is Satan, the angel of death, and it is not the serpent that kills, but sin that kills. However, the reward of the commandments will come from Hashem in particular and the righteous will be rewarded with good, through their reward even when the reward is not found in the nature of the commandment, Hashem will reward them with good in particular, apart from the good that is continuous with the nature of the commandments, and it is like the parable of a king who commanded his servants not to eat a certain type of fruit because it is the poison of death, and that they should eat a certain type of fruit because it is good for the health of the body. Those who eat the poison of death will receive their punishment from the deadly poison itself, and those who eat the good fruit, in addition to what they ate is good and beneficial, will receive a reward for having heard the king's commandments:

Good will bequeath to children of children, after saying that evil will pursue the sinner, and that Hashem will reward the righteous with good, he responds in contrast to what we sometimes see that the righteous have torment and the wicked are in peace, Azzah. If you see that the righteous has not received his reward, it is because Good will bequeath to children of children, and that Hashem will reward his reward to his sons and to his generations after him, (and so it is said in the Midrash that Hashem answered Moses, "If I had given the fathers their wages in their lifetime, what would they have bequeathed to their sons?"), and if you see the wicked standing in his wealth, know that the wicked will be strong against the righteous, and he only guards it, until the righteous comes and inherits it, and as the saying goes, "The wicked will prepare and the righteous will wear it."

A great man eats the head of a lion, and there is one who perishes without justice, referring to the previous one, he says, and if you ask, why doesn't Hashem pay the reward for justifying himself? And why did we see that the righteous man, whose world is nourished by his merit, and whose own merit is not nourished, as Rabbi Ben Dosa said about him, "The whole world is nourished because of my son Hanina, and my son Hanina, and a thornbush is enough for him, from the Lord's side, to the Lord's side?" He replies that we have seen in reality that abundance of food comes through the plowshares, that the people of the land are plowed up to remove the thorns and briers from there, that this is hard work that the landowners will do, and through them comes abundant food, and in 27 there are among the landowners who perish without justice, who die of hunger and have no food for them, even though all the food comes through their work, and likewise, even though abundant food comes through the righteous and their merit that remove the thorns that hinder abundance, in 27 he will be found among them who perish of hunger, and a thornbush is enough for him, and this is because Hashem knows that if he has wealth, his merit will not be enough to reduce abundance so much, just as if the landowners had bread, they would not have They will hire themselves to plow and to light the fire, and this is one of the wonders of leadership, and in the 27th century the stone was blameless in its actions and all its ways were just:

The darkness of his tribe hates his son. Whoever is the darkness of his tribe in his longing for his son, he hates him, because then he will not learn wisdom, because a wise son disciplines a father, and this is a sign that his death for his son, who cannot see in his grief, is more to him than the benefit of his son, and thus he loves A'A more than his son and hates his son, but he who loves his son and disciplines him, disciplines him every morning for his good in the end, and this is also an answer to the question of why Hashem brings torment upon the righteous and there is one who perishes without justice, because it is from His love for him, as it says, "For as a man disciplines his son, the Lord your Hashem disciplines you, and therefore he disciplines him in torment to be his discipline and to be his good in the end:

A righteous man eats to his heart's content. The righteous man does not eat to fill his stomach, only to satisfy his soul to the point of satisfaction is not permissible. It would also imply that he eats to satisfy his spiritual soul, as he only needs to revive his soul. However, wicked men who eat to fill their stomachs, their stomachs will always be lacking, because everything he has makes him crave more and there is no end to his cravings. This is also a response to the above, because Rabbi Hanina ben Dosa was truly satisfied with a basket of carob and did not want more, because he did not want only to satisfy his soul and the pleasures of this world were nothing in his eyes, because the main pleasure is the pleasure of the soul in the world to come:
