Allegory: “Behold, you are beautiful”—At this point the beloved begins to praise her in detail, just as a bridegroom praises his bride, extolling each of her features one by one.
Figurative Meaning: “Behold”—The heavenly Beloved now praises His perfect bride in all her details, for He is now united with her while she continues to act within the body through the service of God in the eternal Temple. The eyes of the soul are two, as I explained earlier (1:15). They are: the spiritual eye through which she gazes upon the divinity manifested in the greater world, and the eye through which she beholds the divinity present within her own little world. Both are compared to doves that never separate from their mate. Although they are behind your veil and your binding—that is, enclosed within the bonds of the body and imprisoned there—yet through the veil and the attachment to flesh, your two eyes still peer forth to behold Me and to know Me. Your hair—Just as in the body the hair and teeth are formed from excess substances that nature expels outward, so that we may say they grow from the body's interior, whose inner substance has thickened and hardened before emerging outside, so too in the spiritual allegory hair and teeth symbolize the manifestation of an inner light breaking forth and emerging outward until it becomes perceptible and conceivable to us. (For this reason, the masters of hidden wisdom employ the imagery of hair and teeth concerning the higher sefirot and the most sublime emanations. They teach that hair symbolizes the radiance of innumerable lights streaming outward from the inner Godhead, while the teeth symbolize the thirty-two paths of wisdom.) A similar phenomenon is found in the soul. In the rational soul, which is intellect attached to matter, the existence of intellect is manifested in two ways: first through concepts, and second through judgments and syllogisms. Concepts are innumerable, and no one concept is identical to another. As logic teaches, every concept possesses a distinguishing feature by which it is recognized as different from all others. Therefore these concepts are called the hair of the soul. Just as hair grows from the surplus matter of the brain, which is the seat of intellect, and consists of countless fine strands, so too the surplus of inward understanding shines forth through the hair of the soul, namely its concepts. They are compared to a flock of goats descending from Mount Gilead. The goats were all marked and distinguished—speckled, spotted, and streaked—so that each could be recognized individually. Likewise every concept possesses its own distinguishing mark and characteristic. (Similarly, in the Divine soul that is not bound to matter, the hair symbolizes the spiritual concepts it has attained concerning Divine matters, which are exceedingly numerous.) These concepts resemble a flock of goats descending from Mount Gilead, which symbolizes the higher worlds known in the language of the mystics as the worlds of the “Bound” and the “Spotted,” standing at the very beginning of manifestation upon the lofty mountains of eternity. It may also allude to the chariots of God, myriads upon myriads, and to the innumerable perceptions that descended from Mount Sinai, where God bore witness between Himself and His people, and where the mountain stood as a witness between them.
Figurative Meaning: “Your teeth”—Just as the teeth are a hardening and outward manifestation of the body's surplus substances, so too in the realm of the soul they signify, in the case of the rational soul attached to matter, the manifestation of intellect through its specific methods and operations. These are judgments and syllogisms. It is explained at length in the science of logic that there are sixteen laws implanted in the very nature of the intellect: twelve relating to the forms of judgments and four relating to the forms of reasoning in syllogisms. From these emerge sixteen pathways through which judgments and rational demonstrations are constructed. We have explained this elsewhere at length. Together they constitute the thirty-two paths, corresponding to the teeth, of which sixteen grow in the upper jaw and sixteen in the lower jaw, each set opposite the other. In the allegory they are compared to a flock of shorn sheep coming up from the washing, whose wool has been cleansed of every stain. All are evenly shorn and equal in appearance. Likewise, these intellectual pathways bear no imprint derived from sensory perception, for their distinctions are inherent in the operation of the intellect itself, which by its nature is divided into these pathways. “All of them bear twins, and none among them is bereaved,” for they are strong foundations that produce living offspring. That is, all products of the intellect arise according to these modes of operation, as is known in detail from the science mentioned above. (Likewise, in regard to the Divine soul that is not attached to matter, its lofty spiritual perceptions are rooted in the thirty-two supernal paths of wisdom. These are pure and free from every impurity or defect, like the flock of shorn sheep. None among them is bereaved, for they are all offspring of the living God and fruits of the supreme wisdom.)
Figurative Meaning: “Like a thread”—He now portrays her speech, and for this reason the soul is called the speaking soul, since it reveals its concepts and perceptions outwardly through speech. Her lips are like a scarlet thread, upon which pearls are strung, so that individual pearls scattered apart are joined together by the thread and become a single necklace. Likewise, speech binds together the concepts and perceptions of the soul, stringing them into complete statements and coherent discourse. “And your speech is lovely” in itself and holy, for you speak through Torah, prophecy, and the Holy Spirit, as it is written, “The Spirit of Hashem spoke through me, and His word was upon my tongue.” “Like a slice”—After describing those things that are manifested from the soul—namely concepts, judgments, and speech, through which we recognize its essence as an intellectual being—he now says that the essence of the soul as it exists in itself is like a slice of pomegranate. Just as a pomegranate is filled with six hundred and thirteen seeds, so its very essence is filled with Divine and intellectual lights. This is what he calls “your temple” (rakkatekh), for the soul itself occupies no space and appears like something empty, as though nothing were present within it. Yet it is full like a slice of pomegranate. This remains behind your veil and your bond with the body, for the nature of the soul in its essence is beyond our comprehension. We know it only through its connection with the body.
Figurative Meaning: “Like the tower”—After describing the soul as it functions within itself through the attainment of intellect and wisdom, he now begins to portray it as it governs the body and rules over it. He descends from describing the features of the skull, which is the dwelling place of the rational soul, to the middle region of the body, where the vital soul resides. (For this reason these descriptions are omitted later in 6:7, as explained there.) The neck is the curtain that separates the skull from the body, and it is as though through this screen—the neck—the soul gives forth its voice, a voice of strength, commanding and ruling over the vital soul and its powers. Therefore he compares the soul's neck to the Tower of David, which was built for an armory (talpiyyot). There the mighty warriors stood, armed with bows, to wage war against enemies at the gate, and upon it hung a thousand shields and all the armor of the mighty men for battle and warfare. Likewise, through this channel the soul rules over its enemies. There it hangs its shields in order to bend the bow against the forces of the old and foolish king who builds fortresses against the little city in order to conquer it. Yet the soul prevails over him through its wisdom, as it is written: “And there was found in it a poor wise man, and he delivered the city through his wisdom.” It has already been explained that within the appetitive faculty there are found a directing power, a commanding power, and a completing power. He portrays the two breasts, which he will describe next, as the products of the appetitive faculty, while above them stands the strong tower—the neck—which symbolizes the ruling and commanding power that rebukes with a voice of authority so that its commands will be obeyed. From there it compels the appetitive faculty to submit to the commands of the intellect standing above it. Together with it is the thousand shields, representing the directing power, and all the armor of the mighty men, representing the completing power, which imposes its discipline and order upon them.
Figurative Meaning: “Your two breasts”—Below them are the two breasts, which symbolize the appetitive power and the irascible power, both of which are offspring of the emotive faculty. Therefore he says that they are “two fawns, twins of a gazelle” (tzvi also meaning desire or inclination), indicating that they are children of one mother. As is well known in the science of the soul, these two powers arise from the same source. For example, a person desires some food that belongs to his fellow and becomes angry at him in order to take it away. Likewise the reverse may occur. Yet through the guidance of the Divine soul, they become “feeding among the lilies” that emit a pleasant fragrance. That is, they no longer desire or arouse themselves except toward spiritual matters, the service of God, and the fulfillment of His commandments.
Allegory: “Until”—He said to her: Behold, this union between us will continue until the heat of the day grows strong and the shadows flee away. Then the daughters of Zion will return from their journey. Nevertheless, even then I will not wander far away from you as before. Rather, I will go to the mountain of myrrh, where I will remain for a time.
Figurative Meaning: “Until”—That is, this union between the holy Beloved and the beloved soul will continue until the day breathes forth, which is an allegory for the time when the soul will no longer be prepared for prophetic union (as explained above in 2:17). Even so, the Divine Presence will not depart from him after the daughters of Zion—that is, the powers of matter—return to their former strength. For from this point onward the Divine Presence will abide permanently through the Temple and the sacrifices, and not through intellectual contemplation, meditation, and prophecy alone as had been the case until now. Such contemplation cannot continue permanently, because matter hinders the soul from continuously attaining knowledge or beholding Divine visions. The service of the Temple, however, draws down the Divine influence through physical means such as sacrifices, meal-offerings, libations, and all the rites of the Temple and its vessels. Just as physical nourishment enables the Divine soul to dwell within the human body—for the finest and purest part of food is refined and elevated to become nourishment for the vital soul, and that which is still more purified becomes nourishment for the rational soul—so too the choicest portion ascending from the fires and incense of the sacrifices through the Divine fire became a throne and dwelling place for the continual presence of the Shekhinah. Therefore He says, “I will go to the mountain of myrrh.” As we have already explained (1:13; 3:6), the myrrh mentioned throughout this song symbolizes the purest and most excellent part of the vital soul, for myrrh refers to musk, the fragrant blood obtained from the musk-deer of India. Likewise, the frankincense mentioned throughout the book symbolizes the finest and purest fragrant elements found in the vegetable realm. Thus He means that He will willingly receive the spiritual portions of the offerings ascending from the sacrifice of living creatures and from the blood sprinkled upon the altar. This is the mountain of myrrh. He will also receive the purest portions of the meal-offerings and libations, which are the choicest products of the vegetable realm, the hill of frankincense. (It is called a hill, which is lower than a mountain, because the rank of the vegetable kingdom is lower than that of the animal kingdom. Yet the life-force of the animal depends upon and is supported by the vegetative life-force, just as a mountain rests upon the hill beneath it.) Through this, He will not depart from the beloved soul even when the day breathes forth. For He will be found dwelling continually in the Temple and united with the soul even while it remains bound to the animal and vegetative souls within the body. He will dwell upon the mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense, receiving a pleasing fragrance even from those souls that remain attached to matter.
Figurative Meaning: “You are altogether beautiful”—From this point onward, since even the animal soul and the vegetative soul have been joined to holiness and the glory of God dwells among them to receive from them a pleasing fragrance, there is no longer any blemish in the unique beloved, the heavenly bride. For until now she possessed an inherent blemish attached to her, namely the animal and vegetative souls that were joined to her and clung to her. They were like a defective member, a hindrance standing between her and holiness, disqualifying her from serving as a priest unto the Most High God and from performing the service of contemplation and separation. But now, “you are altogether beautiful,” for even these have been united with holiness.
Allegory: “Come with me”—From there you shall go and come with me from Lebanon, to remain with me permanently, for I will bring you out from Solomon's chambers. From this point onward he calls her “bride,” for now he betroths her to himself in faithfulness. There you shall gaze from afar from the peaks of Senir and Hermon, whose great heights, together with the lions' dens found there, make them inaccessible for ordinary people to ascend to the mountaintops.
Figurative Meaning: “Come with me”—He says to her that from now on He will never separate from her. (He calls her “bride” because God now betroths this precious soul to be uniquely designated for the continual resting of His Presence upon her.) He points out to her the place where and through which she will always find Him. This is Lebanon, meaning the Temple, which whitens the soul's stains. It is the free forest to which the soul goes forth from its confinement, as was said above, “The beams of our house are cedars.” From there the perfect bride shall go with Him. The Midrash HaNe'elam on Chayei Sarah (128a) explains: “With me from Lebanon, O bride”—this refers to the soul. Likewise, “From Lebanon you shall come with me,” ascending to the spiritual dwelling place from one level to another. He further explains that the daughters of Zion and Jerusalem—that is, the powers of matter and its inclinations—will no longer be able to interrupt this precious union, because “you shall look from the summit of Amana.” There she learned faith in God through the manifestation of the Divine Presence and the open miracles that continually occurred in the Temple. Likewise, she shall look from the summit of Senir and Hermon, the ancient mountains where God performed wonders and signs, and where similar miracles continued in the Temple. Thus the Divine Presence rested there through a miraculous and wondrous mode, not merely according to the ordinary measure of human preparation and merit. (The Zohar, Shemot 5a, explains: “With me from Lebanon”—from the place that is the supernal Temple; “you shall look from the summit of Amana”—from the heads of the faithful; “from the summit of Senir and Hermon”—those who are destined to receive My Torah.) From there you shall look from the lions' dens, for the lion inspires fear in all living creatures because of its strength, and the leopard because of its boldness. He depicts the awakening of strength and boldness in the service of God in the sanctuary, causing the powers of life to submit and not rebel against the rule of the soul. (The Zohar there explains: “From the lions' dens”—these are the Torah scholars who occupy themselves with Torah, for they are lions and leopards in Torah.) We have explained elsewhere that all the powers scattered throughout the various living creatures are gathered together in the human soul. When the quality of strength predominates in a person, he is called a lion, as Maimonides explains regarding the vision of the Chariot. When the quality of boldness predominates, he is called a leopard. Thus the sages said: “Be bold as a leopard and mighty as a lion to do the will of your Father in heaven.” This is also the allegory of the heavenly fire that crouched like a lion and consumed the sacrifices, signifying the subjugation of the bodily life-forces through the burning fire of Divine service and the strength with which they served and cleaved to their King. (Ra'aya Meheimna, Vayikra 17b: From the side of the Throne of Judgment descended a lion of fire to consume the sacrifices... and when the heavenly fire descended and burned them, the destructive forces appointed over those limbs were also burned away. Therefore it descended as a lion of fire to consume them. See also Zohar, Parashat Tzav 32a.)
Allegory: “You have ravished my heart”—You have drawn my heart to your heart, even though you look toward me with only one of your eyes, for with the other eye you still look toward Solomon's chambers and toward the daughters of Zion who guard you. Likewise, only one of the chains of your necklace is devoted exclusively to me, while the rest belong to Solomon.
Figurative Meaning: “You have ravished my heart”—He says: Until now our union was through intellectual attainment, whose seat is in the mind. Now it will be through the awakening of the soul in Divine service, which is performed through the service of the heart, the source of the appetitive faculty and the powers of life. Therefore He says, “You have ravished my heart,” signifying the attachment of heart to heart. Until now the condition for this attainment required two eyes: the eye that contemplates and understands the divinity manifested in the great chariot, namely the universal order of existence, and the eye that contemplates the divinity within the soul itself, the little chariot (as explained above in 1:15 and 4:1). But now you have drawn My heart with one of your eyes. There is no longer a need for speculative contemplation concerning existence and its governance. Rather, it is enough for the soul to look within itself, descending to oversee its own little world, unifying all its powers and offering them as a sacrifice before the King of Glory. Likewise, one chain of your necklace is sufficient—that is, the command of the practical intellect alone, directing reverence and Divine service. The theoretical intellect is no longer required.
Figurative Meaning: “How beautiful”—Until now the union was through prophetic attainment, and the relationship was based upon the Divine Name, for prophetic revelation descends from above to below. Not so the attachment that comes through the service performed in the Temple. Its essence comes through the attribute of love dwelling in the chambers of the soul, through which it longs and yearns with intense affection for its Beloved. This attachment rises from below to above through the soul's own awakening and love. Therefore He says, “How beautiful is your love.” Until now He praised only the soul itself, as in, “Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved.” Now He praises her love. Previously He united with her through intellectual attainment, which belongs to the essence of the soul itself. Now He unites with her through the flame of her love as expressed in her service of God. For this reason He calls her “my sister,” because through the quality of love she becomes His sister, equal and akin to Him. He explains further: “How much better is your love than wine.” If wine is understood literally, the meaning is that the soul's fervor in loving God is superior to the excitement produced by wine, which is a foreign and bodily fire, whereas love of God is spiritual and Divine. If wine is understood in its allegorical sense, which throughout this book signifies prophetic influence, then the meaning is that her love—that is, the attribute of love itself—is greater than the level of prophetic attainment. For love becomes part of the soul's very essence, causing it to remain continually attached in affection to its Beloved. “And the fragrance of your oils”—that is, the perception and understanding attained through her ardor and service—are better than all spices. Spices throughout the book symbolize intellectual and speculative insights. The oil poured forth through love of God represents the understanding gained through the Holy Spirit that rests upon those who cleave to Him in love.
Allegory: “Honeycomb”—He relates that the lovers now drew near to one another and openly revealed their love. This is the meaning of “How beautiful is your love.” He comes still closer in order to kiss her and says, “Your lips drip honeycomb; honey and milk are under your tongue.”
Figurative Meaning: “Honeycomb”—He describes the soul's approach to God through three means: thought, speech, and action. Having first spoken of thought, which is filled with love of God, as it says, “How beautiful is your love,” for this was the essence of the sacrifices (as the Zohar, Vayikra 9a, states: “The essence of the offering is to bring before the Holy One, blessed be He, one's will, spirit, and soul”), he now speaks of speech expressed through Torah study, prayer, and sacred songs. Therefore, “your lips drip honeycomb.” We have consistently explained that there is a distinction between the lip and the tongue: the lip signifies outward speech, while the tongue signifies inward intellectual speech. Therefore he adds, “Honey and milk are under your tongue.” Honey is produced by bees from the blossoms of plants, while milk is produced by nature from the choicest part of the blood of living creatures. This is an allegory for the transformation of the vegetative and animal souls into pure and noble forms fit to become excellent nourishment for the rational soul, like honey and milk. In other words, the inner meaning of the commandments and sacrifices is the refinement of the sparks and the purification of the souls, elevating the vegetative and animal realms to the level of the speaking being, as is well known. He now mentions actions, which are the external garments within which speech and thought are clothed. Thus he says, “And the fragrance of your garments,” meaning those garments of action, is “like the fragrance of Lebanon,” which rose from the sacrifices. Their purpose was to unite the Divine Presence with the holy congregation and to join and connect all levels of existence to their root.
Allegory: He adds, “A locked garden,” for no man had known her.
Figurative Meaning: “A locked garden”—He now looks upon the soul and declares that she is a virgin, undefiled by foreign gods, which symbolize the powers of the appetitive and desirous inclination, after which souls prostitute themselves and thereby profane their holiness. He says that she is like a locked garden into which no stranger has entered. The enclosure through which one approaches the spring is shut, and the spring and fountain themselves are sealed. That is, these alien powers have not approached her either in thought or in deed. Her source remains sealed with the seal of divinity and holiness, just as it was when she dwelt in her sacred abode.
Allegory: “Your shoots”—He explains the excellences of the garden, in which every delightful fruit is found, and the excellences of the spring, which is a well of living waters and flowing streams.
Figurative Meaning: “Your shoots”—He now draws near to the locked garden and praises everything found within it. In it are fruits that are good for food, namely “an orchard of pomegranates,” and things prized for fragrance, namely “henna with spikenard.” The meaning is as follows. We have seen regarding the sacrifices that their purpose was to perpetuate the Divine Presence among God's people, and their relationship to the indwelling holiness was like the relationship of food and fragrance to the soul dwelling within the body, as explained in the Kuzari. The sacrifices symbolized food, as it is written, “My offering, My food for My fire-offerings,” for through the spiritual essence separated from the animal and vegetative souls, joined together with the thought and intention of the holy soul, they became a dwelling place for the Divine Presence. The incense symbolized fragrance, just as food represented bodily service and fragrance represented Divine perception. (As the Zohar, Vayikra 12a, states: “The incense binds the bond of faith.” And on 72a: “These are the ten names by which the Holy One, blessed be He, is called. They are joined one to another in perfect unity, and these are the holy crowns of the King through which He is known. When they are all joined together through the fragrance of the incense, then it is called ketoret, meaning a bond, because they are united as one.”) Accordingly, he portrays this garden as containing things for nourishment, namely “an orchard of pomegranates.” The pomegranate symbolizes the six hundred and thirteen commandments, corresponding to the number of its seeds. These are the bread, the banquet of the Holy King, together with “all choice fruits,” which include the additional safeguards, admonitions, and similar ordinances. Corresponding to fragrance, the garden contains aromatic substances such as “henna with spikenard,” and the like. These are ten kinds, corresponding to the ten spiritual elements represented by the ten ingredients of the incense. (The galbanum has no place in the allegory of this song, since the beloved is entirely beautiful and has no blemish.) See also the Zohar, Terumah 132a and Vayakhel 210b, where a different enumeration is given according to the mystical interpretation.

Figurative Meaning: “A fountain”—After describing the excellence of the garden, which symbolizes the Torah and the commandments entrusted by the Owner of the garden to its keepers, he now describes the excellence of the fountain itself that waters the garden. This is the very essence of the soul and its holiness. It is “a fountain of gardens,” the spring that irrigates the garden, whose waters flow from within itself. It is also “a well” from which one draws “living waters.” The waters of this fountain “flow from Lebanon.” That is, the soul is a spiritual essence possessing actual intellect, continually overflowing with wisdom, knowledge, and the Spirit of God. From it, living and eternal waters may be drawn through contemplation, Divine service, and purification. In this way, human beings draw the waters of understanding and everlasting life from the holy source whose waters never fail. (See the Zohar, Balak 211b.) These waters flow from the supernal Lebanon, for their source proceeds from the Temple, which is the dwelling place of spirits and souls.
Allegory: “Awake”—She says: Let the north wind and the south wind awaken and blow upon the garden and its spices, so that the Beloved may come into it and eat of its fruits. That is, let the winds of desire and love be stirred up and let the garden of affection exhale its fragrance, so that she may be united with her Beloved in love.
Figurative Meaning: “Awake”—The soul now commands the winds to awaken. This is an allegory for the stirring spirit that raises its images and impressions to the heart, symbolized by the north wind, and for the spirit of holiness, love, and all the noble qualities of the soul that arise from the good inclination, symbolized by the south wind that turns toward the right. He says of the north wind, “Awake,” because its natural tendency is not to breathe upon the garden in the service of God, whereas of the south wind he says, “Come,” because that is already its natural course and it requires no awakening. These winds shall blow upon the garden until its spices flow forth. That is, they shall awaken the soul's hidden powers stored within the heart toward love and longing for God, until its fragrances and spiritual qualities pour forth. This is done so that the heavenly Beloved may come into the garden and eat its choice fruits, meaning that He receives delight and acceptance from the goodness of the soul's thoughts and deeds, which are Hashem's bread and inheritance. (The Zohar, Bo 36a, explains: “And let Him eat its pleasant fruits”—these are the sacrifices offered before Him from the souls of the righteous.)
