Figurative Meaning: “O that you were like a brother to me”—the beloved soul laments that she had to leave the house of her mother and her family, meaning her original spiritual source and familiar attachments, and wander with her Beloved through fields and wilderness. She says: would that You were to me like a brother who nursed at my mother’s breasts, so that even if I would kiss You in public, I would not be despised or regarded with shame, meaning that our intimate spiritual union would be openly recognized and not hidden or constrained by the limitations of the corporeal world.
She now longs for the level of Moses and Elijah, who were not hindered by the body and its inclinations from constant cleaving to the spiritual realm, and who had the ability to cast off their “defiled garments” at will and separate from the body into prophecy and Divine attachment, even dwelling as it were both above and within, in a state of constant ascent and return, clothed in “garments of light” and drawing Divine glory into their inner chamber so that it would dwell within them. Thus she says: “O that You were like a brother to me,”“like one who nursed at my mother’s breasts,”“I would find You outside and kiss You,”“they would not despise me,”</b meaning the faculties of the body, the “daughters of Jerusalem,” would not obstruct or mock her, but would allow her to separate and unite with her Beloved at all times.```
Figurative Meaning: And I would also be able to guide You and bring You into the house of my mother, meaning into the innermost source from which I was drawn. And there “you would teach me,”“I would give You to drink of spiced wine,”</b meaning the deepest delights of love and spiritual attachment would be expressed openly and without concealment, in the presence of all, without shame or restraint.
Figurative Meaning: (Secondly) “I would lead You and bring You to the house of my mother,” meaning into my corporeal existence, and there “You would teach me” Your Torah and commandments, that is, the Divine service I would perform while still clothed in flesh and body. And “I would give You to drink of spiced wine,”“of the juice of my pomegranates,”</b meaning from my good deeds, for throughout this book the pomegranate symbolizes the 613 commandments, corresponding to its many seeds.
Figurative Meaning: “And that His left hand would be under my head openly”—meaning that even in the revealed and manifest state, the Divine support and sustaining Providence would be extended to the soul in a clear and public way, so that her dependence upon Him and her attachment to Him would not be hidden or concealed, but would be openly recognized in her existence within the world of action and embodiment.
Figurative Meaning: And that “His left hand would be under my head”—as I have already explained earlier (2:6), the “left hand” symbolizes intellectual apprehension and rational understanding, while the “right hand” symbolizes prophetic apprehension, which is purer and free of any admixture. Thus the meaning is that the pure and elevated apprehension of Divine inspiration (Ruach HaKodesh) would become the primary and dominant form of perception, surpassing the lower mode of intellectual understanding that arises through philosophical inquiry and analytical reasoning, as explained above.
Figurative Meaning: “I adjure you”—she concludes her words addressing the daughters of Jerusalem, whom she has often adjured by the hosts or by the gazelles. But now she says that she is no longer afraid of them, for “what can you awaken or stir up?”—you are no longer able to disturb or suppress this love in any way, for it has reached a state in which it cannot be interrupted or overcome by any external influence.
Figurative Meaning: “I adjure you”—however, she returns again to her words and says: you, daughters of Jerusalem, which are the powers of the body, “have I not adjured you” often “by the gazelles or by the hinds of the field,”“what can you awaken or stir up love?”</b you will no longer be able to accomplish anything, neither to draw me away nor to bring me closer, for I have already separated myself from the faculties of the body and I dwell in the shadow of the Almighty.
Figurative Meaning: “Who is this”—the poet asks: who is this that has moved away from the settled city into the wilderness and yet clings affectionately to her beloved? And the Beloved answers: “Under the apple tree I awakened you,” meaning at the very place where I first found you, I found you asleep under the apple tree, and there I awakened you; and there again, under the apple tree, your mother travailed with you and gave birth to you. And there too your mother herself was born. Thus it is fitting that you dwell in the wilderness rather than in the city, for both you and your ancestors were formed and found there, and you are accustomed to that place from your origin.
The answer: “Under the apple tree I awakened you,”“There your mother was in labor with you,”“there she who bore you was in labor with you,”```
Figurative Meaning: “Set me as a seal upon your heart”—the beloved soul asks of her Beloved that He place her like a permanent seal upon His heart and upon His arm, meaning that she should be constantly remembered and guarded in both His inner love and His outward governance, so that she may be protected from the wrath of the King, for her love is strong as death, since she has given her life for His love. Yet the jealousy of the King is severe like Sheol because she has left Him, and therefore only the flames of her love can overcome even that severity, for they are flames of fire, a flame of God, stronger than the fire of judgment itself.
Figurative Meaning: “Set me as a seal”—the soul asks of her heavenly Beloved that He place her as a seal upon His heart and upon His arm, meaning that she be united with Him in both intention and action, in love and in manifestation, so that she may be constantly bound to His will and His governance. For **“love is strong as death,”**the jealousy of the evil inclination is as strong as Sheol, seeking to draw her away from Divine service and cast her into the depths of destruction, nevertheless the flames of the love of God that burn within her are flames of fire, a flame of Hashem, which overcome and consume the forces of temptation and the seductions of the evil inclination. Therefore, since she has always struggled with it and prevailed, she is worthy to be placed as a seal upon His heart and His arm, receiving her reward both in Divine will and in revealed action.
Figurative Meaning: “Many waters”—the poet observes the immense power of love and its fiery flames, declaring that “many waters cannot quench it” nor can floods extinguish it, meaning that all of Solomon’s attempts and strategies to turn the beloved soul away from her Beloved were completely ineffective. For the fire of love cannot be extinguished by abundant waters, nor can rivers that normally sweep away all things in their path overcome it; thus neither persuasion nor force, neither kindness nor coercion, could succeed. Therefore, “if a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly despised,”</b meaning that such love cannot be purchased with wealth or external means, but depends solely on the inner devotion of the heart.
Figurative Meaning: The beloved soul cleaves to her Beloved—that is, the soul has reached a state of complete attachment and unity with her Divine source, where no external force, power, or obstruction can separate her from Him, and she remains bound in enduring love and unbreakable devotion.
And with this the fifth song is completed.
Figurative Meaning: “Many waters”—the poet declares: “Many waters cannot quench love,”“Nor can rivers overwhelm it,”“if a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly despised,”</b meaning that such love is not something that can be purchased by material wealth or external means, for it is of such a lofty nature that one must give one’s very life and essence for it; thus any attempt to measure it by material value is considered contemptible.
Figurative Meaning: The beloved soul of Solomon cleaves to the eternal life, the God of the spirits of all flesh—meaning the perfected soul has now reached complete attachment to her Divine source, the “Life of all lives,” from whom all spirits are drawn, and she remains bound to Him in everlasting unity without separation.
And with this the fifth song is completed.
Figurative Meaning: The Song of Songs: In this song it is told that the beloved soul pleads on behalf of her younger sister, lest the King desire her as well, and it further describes the response of the Beloved and of her sister.
Figurative Meaning: The sister of the beloved says: we have a younger sister who has not yet developed her “breasts,” meaning she has not yet reached maturity of faculties and readiness for full spiritual union. What shall we do for her on the day she will be spoken for, when she is to be joined to the King, lest King Solomon desire to take her for himself?
Figurative Meaning: The Song of Songs of a Thousand: This song describes how the soul pours out her plea before God on behalf of her younger sister, which is the potential, undeveloped spirit, that it should not be taken by the “king,” meaning that it should not become overly attached to the body and perish with it. It also includes the response of the Holy One, blessed be He, and the response of the spirit itself regarding this matter.
Yet through proper deeds, Torah, and Divine service, a kind of “alchemical” refinement is performed upon it, until it becomes purified and acquires an enduring, incorporeal nature, so that it may remain alive after the death of the body. And as the sages of truth have explained at length, the spirit remains in the lower Garden of Eden, while the higher Divine soul ascends above and at times “clothes itself” within it when it descends. Therefore the higher soul says: we have a little sister, meaning the spirit, but “she has no breasts,”“what shall we do for our sister on the day she is spoken for?”</b meaning: if she is taken into the “house of the king,” that is, into the body and physical existence of Solomon, will she be destroyed together with it in the grave, or how will she be preserved so as to remain in eternal life?```
Figurative Meaning: “The Beloved answers”—If she is a wall, meaning if the lower soul remains closed and firm like a wall, not yielding itself to the attraction of the body, then we will build upon her a silver tower, meaning she will be protected and elevated by a strong spiritual structure of longing and refinement (for “silver” alludes to yearning and desire), and she will be given a partner who will direct her longing toward God, through whom she will be drawn out from the domain of Solomon, that is, the body. But if she is a door, meaning if she is open and inclined toward the desires of Solomon, then we will enclose her with a cedar plank, meaning she will be left to him and bound within the structure of the physical world, since cedar represents durability in the material order and thus indicates her remaining within corporeal limitation.
Figurative Meaning: “If”—the Holy One, blessed be He, answers: “If she is a wall,”“we will build upon her a tower of silver,”“if she is a door,”“we will enclose her with a cedar board,”</b meaning she will be left to perish with the body in the grave, under the covering of the wooden coffin, and remain bound to material existence.
Figurative Meaning: The sister replies: “I am a wall,”“my breasts are like towers,”“I was in his eyes as one who finds peace,”</b meaning that until now I was regarded as one who is at peace and complete before Him, as though my appointed time of union and spiritual maturity had not yet arrived, and therefore I had not yet been touched or brought into full engagement with the lower realm.
Figurative Meaning: “I”—the spirit replies: “I was a wall,”“my breasts,”“were like towers,”“I was in his eyes as one who finds peace,”</b meaning that the body regarded me as being in a state of peace with the inclination, as though no battle was waged against me, because I had already drawn it toward Divine service and made peace with it, until it entered into a covenant with me and my heart became emptied within me.
Figurative Meaning: “And the proof of this is: Solomon had a vineyard in Baal-hamon,”“the vineyard was so large that its keepers each brought a thousand silver pieces for its fruit,”</b meaning that the powers appointed over it—those who “guard” and tend the faculties and actions of the soul—each bring abundant reward and yield, indicating the vast productivity of the soul’s capacities when properly cultivated and directed.
And “he gave the vineyard to keepers,”“each man brought a thousand silver pieces for its fruit,”</b meaning that from all these activities there emerged abundant reward and valuable, desirable attainments of great worth.```
Figurative Meaning: And this is my vineyard, which stands before me, for Solomon gave me this vineyard as a gift because I was in his eyes as one who finds peace. But she then retracts her words and says: I do not wish to retain this vineyard for myself; rather, the thousand pieces of silver that were brought as the reward of the vineyard shall be yours, Solomon, and I will also return the two hundred that belong to the keepers of its fruit, for I do not seek to derive benefit from this vineyard at all.
But she then concludes that Solomon himself—the body and its faculties that labored in this vineyard through Torah and service—will not be deprived of his reward, for they will rest in the grave in sleep and will arise at the appointed time at the end of days (as explained in Zohar Va’era 28b). Therefore she says: “The thousand are for you, Solomon,”“the two hundred for those who keep its fruit,”</b meaning, as stated in Midrash Ne’elam (Chayei Sarah 124), every righteous person engaged in Torah is granted two hundred worlds and treasures as reward for the Torah.```
Figurative Meaning: “O you who dwell in the gardens”—the Beloved speaks to the younger sister, meaning the soul that has not yet withdrawn into the wilderness like her elder sister, but remains within the “gardens,” that is, within the closer and more settled realms adjacent to the body and the city. And because she is still near the “city,” there are companions who listen to her words. Yet the Beloved says that He cannot fully unite with her in close intimacy; rather, only “let Me hear your voice,”</b meaning that from a distance she should direct her longing and devotion toward Him whenever possible.
Therefore the Holy One, blessed be He, says to the spirit: “You who dwell in the gardens,”“there are companions who listen,”“let Me hear your voice,”</b meaning only at designated times and intervals does your spiritual ascent reach Me.```
Figurative Meaning: And she too becomes fearful of the “watchers,” meaning the opposing forces that hinder spiritual ascent, and she says: “Flee, my beloved,”“be like a gazelle or a young stag,”</b meaning that He should return in a hidden and swift manner, appearing only intermittently and at moments of spiritual readiness, so that she may be able to endure and cleave to Him again and again without obstruction.
Figurative Meaning: And likewise the spirit says to God: “Flee, my beloved,”“be like a gazelle or a young stag,”</b meaning return swiftly from time to time, as the gazelle returns to its place and looks back repeatedly, so too may You return to me intermittently, from moment to moment and from occasion to occasion, granting brief but recurring moments of Divine closeness.
