As on Shabbat, the morning Kiddush for Yom Tov is essentially only the blessing over the wine, since the blessing over the day has been made the previous night. We preface it with two verses taken from the beginning and end of the passage dealing with the festivals in Leviticus, chapter 23. The phrase mikra’ei kodesh, “sacred assemblies,” may mean: (1) times whose holiness is proclaimed by the festive drink, food and dress of the day (Sifra); (2) times at which the community is summoned to come together in prayer and celebration (Nahmanides); (3) holy days whose date is determined by the proclamation of the earthly court (Rashbam); (4) times whose date is made known throughout the nation by messengers or other signals by the court (Abrabanel); or (5) days in which, as it were, our souls summon us to holiness (Rabbi Yaakov Tzvi Mecklenburg).
