MUSAF – ADDITIONAL SERVICE The Musaf service corresponds to the additional sacrifice that was offered in Temple times on Shabbat and festivals. The sacrificial element is more pronounced in Musaf than in other services, since the other services have a double aspect. On the one hand, they too represent sacrifice (except Ma’ariv, the evening service, because no sacrifices were offered at night). But they also represent the prayers of the patriarchs: the morning service is associated with Abraham, the afternoon service with Isaac and the evening service with Jacob. Musaf has no such additional dimension. It is, simply, the substitute for a sacrifice. As our ancestors brought offerings in the Temple so we bring an offering of words. In my heart I will build a Temple for His glory, and in the Temple I will place an altar to His splendor, and as an eternal light I will take the flame of Isaac’s binding, and as an offering I will offer my only soul. (Rabbi Elazar Azikri) If I declare my wants in prayer, it is not to remind You of them, but only that I may be conscious of my dependence on You. (Rabbi Baḥya ibn Pakuda)
