Fish embryos - fish eggs, as they are found clumped together.
That narrows - thick [Rashi takes an interpretation different that that of the Steinsaltz translation] like a ball (PLOTA).
That narrows and is rounded - this is a single factor. Had it only taught "rounded", this could imply round like a lentil or like a [wheel of] cheese; therefore [the Gemara] taught "koderet ve-agulgolet" [meaning] round like a ball, which is not thin but rather round in the third dimension. [The Gemara] goes on to elaborate that one end is rounded and the other end is pointed; hence not exactly like a ball, but drawn out in length and rounded in breadth.
Rounded - PLTA in a foreign language. That is, it is not pointed but rather like a ball.
Albumen - ALBON.
Yolk - MOIIL.
Egg of a creeping animal - [such as] great lizards and lizards which lay eggs. Later on, [the Gemara] will explain what halakha it is teaching when stating that it is an egg of a creeping animal; it should have just taught "non-kosher" generally.
Regarding cut [eggs] - so that it can't be established whether they were narrow at the top and rounded.
Regarding [eggs] mixed in a bowl - so that everything is mixed.
One may only sell - the egg of a tereifa chicken to an idolator -- who may in turn sell it to a Jew -- if it is mixed in a bowl, since a Jew would not then buy it from him. Therefore, since it is permitted to sell them eggs mixed in a bowl, one may not buy mixed-up eggs [from them], lest it be from a tereifa that a Jew sold him.
Our text is: Rather, Rabbi Zeira said, the signs are not by Torah law - these signs for eggs are not a law given to Moses at Sinai, and we may not rely upon them.
There are eight uncertainties - regarding birds, as we stated earlier in our discussion.
Let one inspect their eggs - and thereby ascertain whether it was a kosher bird.
Certainly non-kosher - and if the idolator tells you that it was from a certain bird, which is kosher, he is certainly lying.
But if one of its ends is pointed, etc. - then these signs are a proof for what the idolator said: if he told you that [the egg] was from a certain kosher bird, you can rely on it, since the signs prove it. If not, you cannot rely on it.
Our text is: since there are crow's [eggs] that resemble those of a pigeon.
Developed - the creeping animal had been formed within it.
And it was perforated - so that one is able to touch the tissue.
Snake [eggs] are similar to those of creeping animals, but are not a source of ritual impurity.
"That swarms upon the earth" - and if it had not informed us that it is the egg of a creeping animal, but rather a non-kosher [animal] generally, I would have said that it is forbidden on account of being from a non-kosher bird, and intend to warn [the potential transgressor not to eat of] a "winged swarming thing" [Deuteronomy 14:19]. Had they warned him [not to eat of] a thing that swarms upon the earth, he would not incur lashes.
