The Book of Gates of Righteousness [Sefer Sha'arei Tzedek] authored by the wise Rabbi Yosef ben Karnitol, son of the honorable Rabbi Avraham, son of R.I.T., the author of the book Gates of Light [Sha'arei Orah]; in righteousness and in justice is his work, to enter into the innermost palace of the Divine Kabbalah, and it shall be righteousness for us when we bring to light the secrets of wisdom. Gates of Righteousness. After light has shone upon us in the book Gates of Light, which has already been printed. And it shall be accounted to us as righteousness. And in righteousness you shall behold His face. For you will understand and know the secret of Kabbalah. As "one who comes to purify himself, they open [the way] for him." And the gates have not been locked. All of them are set upon the earth, and its top reaches unto heaven, and the Work of the Chariot [Ma'aseh Merkavah]. Lift up your heads, O ye gates. And righteousness, righteousness shall you pursue. Turn it over and turn it over, for everything is in it. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving. Then the tongue will sing. Open to me the gates of righteousness; I will enter into them, I will praise the Lord.

You have asked of me, friend of my soul, to illuminate one of the inner attainments, to know which way the light dwells concerning the matter of the Ten Sefirot. And behold, I have lifted up your face [granted your request] to fulfill your desires, and may God favor you. The beginning of the path by which a person enters into the unity of the Creator, blessed be He, is the knowledge of the gate. For do you not know that if a person wishes to see the face of the King, and toils for several days, and after the toil he did not merit to know the location of the gate, what benefit is there in all the toil that he toiled and the entire way that he walked, when he does not know the gate through which to enter to see the face of the King? And in this manner are all those who trouble themselves to enter the Orchard [Pardes], but they do not know and they do not understand, and in darkness they walk, and there is no benefit in their labor. Therefore, I saw fit to illuminate a path before you in the way by which you shall go, and the gate through which you shall enter, and then you will be desired and accepted before Hashem, blessed be He, and you will be among those who merit to behold the pleasantness of Hashem and to visit in His palace.
