O LORD, open my lips, so that my mouth may declare Your praise.

PATRIARCHS
Blessed are You, LORD our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob; the great, mighty and awesome God, God Most High, who bestows acts of loving-kindness and creates all, who remembers the loving-kindness of the fathers and will bring a Redeemer to their children’s children for the sake of His name, in love.
Drawing from the counsel of wise and knowing men, from the teachings born of insight among those who understand, I open my mouth now in prayer and pleading, to implore and to plead before the King, King of kings and LORD of lords.
I am afraid as I open my mouth to weave my prayer / as I rise to entreat the One who inspires awe and terror; My good deeds are few, so I tremble in fear / I lack understanding, so how might I appease You? O my Creator, grant me the understanding for handing down Your legacy; / strengthen and fortify me in the face of frailty and trembling. May my whispered plea be received like the offerings of Ketoret incense; / May my utterances be sweet like the nectar of bees. Receive me in my honesty, not as a hypocrite, / to obtain ransom and atonement on behalf of those who sent me. May my cry be pleasing and not jarring, undeserving; / give heed to those who approach as if they were trembling with fear. O gracious One, as You promised the one whom you passed over in the crevice of the rock, / hearken to my cry as I begin. My insides are agitated when You examine my inner thoughts and intrigues, / and out of fear of judgment my soul grows weary. If I am to be judged as I deserve then my heart shall tremble, / and the wellsprings of my eyelids shall run with tears like a drain of water. I hope for righteousness from You and I pray: / remember the uprightness of our ancestors and let them intercede on our behalf. My heart burns within me as I speak, like embers; / it stirs up within me as the trembling comes.
The trembling comes on this day of judgment, / torturing every creature with its attendant terror. They approach to kneel down on this day, / making straight their thoughts like the upright smoke of the Ketoret incense.
He who fashions all their hearts shall judge them, / and the wealthy and destitute shall be judged and weighed equally. As memory of Abraham’s cry: “Shall the Judge of all not act justly?” / may the worthiness of his pleas be recalled in our judgment.
Before He had fashioned any creature, / God had planned in His mind to create Abraham, the rock from which Israel was to be quarried. He was created as worthy as Adam and placed among generations, / so that God might heap upon him the burden of the entire quarry.
It was on this day that his destined partner was given an abundance of strength; / the fruit of her womb began to blossom at the age of ninety. And this was taken as a sign for our people, likened to a rose, / that we would pass before God with favor on Rosh HaShana.
Her offshoots are frightened as the shofar service of the day is observed; / as they stand to represent themselves before the throne of the most fearful One. On this day they shall whisperingly offer up the sound of their speech, / gathering to sound the shofar in the hope of finding redemption.
They rely on the merit of Sarah so they might also be visited with grace, / and they roar as one while watching alertly at the gates of the Lord. Relying upon the ashes of the ram that replaced Isaac, / in the month of Tishrei when Sarah conceived.
O LORD who ascends with stern judgment, may You rise in compassion at the sound of the shofar, / rather than destroying the valley and all the inhabitants therein. I shall sway Him with the shofar (On Shabbat substitute: the remembrance of the shofar) and my bended knee as I bow, / and I shall find companionship in the shelter of God’s garden, among His beloved nation.
Remember us for life, O King who desires life, and write us in the book of life – for Your sake, O God of life. King, Helper, Savior, Shield: Blessed are You, LORD, Shield of Abraham.
DIVINE MIGHT
You are eternally mighty, LORD. You give life to the dead and have great power to save.
In Israel:
He causes the dew to fall.
He sustains the living with loving-kindness, and with great compassion revives the dead. He supports the fallen, heals the sick, sets captives free, and keeps His faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like You, Master of might, and who can compare to You, O King who brings death and gives life, and makes salvation grow?
When God desired to heal His nation’s curse, / He taught them to arrange prayers that would avail them: The healing song of the ancient mountains – their ancestors, / that they might cry aloud and purge the trap that is the evil inclination.
Their righteousness should float to the surface as they utter their cry, / and their good deeds throughout the years should be heeded. It should be a time of acceptance and a day of salvation, / honoring the covenant-oath that was made when the ram’s horn caught in the thicket.
They approach uttering nine blessings – / as the number of the Musaf paragraphs and blessings. In accordance with God’s name mentioned nine times / in the answered prayer of the barren mother Hannah who gave birth to seven children.
They shall utter God’s royal might in the ten coronation verses, / in memory of Abraham and the ten tests he was given. They shall recite the prescribed ten verses of Remembrance and of the Shofar, / in memory of Isaac who gave Jacob ten blessings of mastery.
And let God turn to the beloved child of the one from Naharayim, / he who was bound on Mount Moriah with his arms behind him. May God espy the ashes of his sacrifice and show favor to the remnant of His nation / who approach Him morning and evening.
It was at this time of year when Isaac beseeched God / that his wife be released from barren bondage. The groan of that sufferer was heard as if crowned; / may You heed my call just as You heeded his prayer.
O awesome King on high, / may You bring forth our judgment into the light. I hope to place a crown upon Him / and, in His kindness, I shall be adorned with the reviving dew of life.
Who is like You, compassionate Father, who remembers His creatures in compassion, for life? Faithful are You to revive the dead. Blessed are You, LORD, who revives the dead.
The stone of the earth and the pillars of darkness on which it rests, / the deep abyss and the barren depths, were fit with the cornerstone of Jacob who serves as the foundation of the ancestral threesome, / that the people might rely on him in their prayer for redemption.
The original ancestral hill that is Rachel, who was despised for being barren, / was squared away on this day as the fourth stone in the edifice of Jacob. As she cried tears for the children she had not yet birthed, / she heard from on high that she need not cry for she would yet be mother of many sons.
When ruddy Esau saw that she had not been visited with birth pangs, / he desired to take her as wife and she was alarmed. She addressed many prayers to God that her hope might be realized; / redeeming her from the wicked one – she remained undefiled.
God recalled the righteousness of her ways / when He changed the child in her sister’s womb from a boy to a girl. He planned that on this day, she would be remembered as one of the mothers, / and arranged the switch of Dina for Joseph.
God changed the gender of the child the way an artisan changes a vessel, / strengthening and augmenting the banners of the hosts of Israel’s tribes. As God listened to the groans of Jacob, the master, / He gave him hope by providing his wife with two tribes.
Just as she was estranged at the start for being barren, / in the end her firstborn came to be like the first fruit of all the sons. Let her merit stand on behalf of her offshoots on the Day of Remembrance, / that God might recall us kindly just as her prayer was answered.
The LORD shall reign for ever. He is your God, Zion, from generation to generation, Halleluya!
You are the Holy One, enthroned on the praises of Israel.
God, please. You are our God, in heaven and on earth. Mighty and revered, encircled with myriads. He spoke and it was, commanded and it came into being. His memory is forever, His life is everlasting. Pure of eye, He sits concealed. His crown is salvation, His garment is righteousness. His cloak is jealousy, His coat is vengeance. His counsel is candor, His wisdom is faith. His deeds are truth, He is righteous and upright. He is close to those who call upon Him in truth, He is sublime and lofty. He resides in the heavens, and hangs the earth over emptiness.
He is alive and everlasting, awesome, lofty and holy.
Awaken and sound the shofar, cut down all evildoers, and be sanctified by those who know to observe the sounding of the shofar. O Holy One.
The glorious mantle of our royalty – / why was it torn from us? / And we have not returned to rule since the Babylonian idol Bel was crowned king. / All followed it, so willing, / in contrast to the laws of our religion. A foreign power has reigned in mastery / over all of our people, who will not be free / until the kingdom of the Lord shall appear.
They burned my Temple, / they broke the backs of my innocent ones in slavery / and they have been given allowance to do as they please. They spread throughout the length and breadth of the land / and drew back their bows, / extending the yoke of their oppression, frightening the soft nation of Israel, / which now lies there trampled / while still the foreigners rule.
The foundations of the Sanctuary, which sustained the heaps of tithes, / were stripped and confiscated by the enemy horde, / and the Temple was laid bare to its foundation. They raised their haughty heads in evil / and took crafty counsel against Your people; / they wielded the upper hand. They burned with evil intentions; / their arrogance extended as far as the heavens / while they girded themselves with Your royal vestments.
They shred my curtains clear away / and plundered my Sanctuary, / turning over the earth till it was plowed clear. They spread their rule / and adopted royal garb, / angering Your nation. They plotted and conspired to rebel against God, / and labored to sway Your people to worship strange gods / as they defiled the reign of our Lord.
They oppressed the children of the King, / and before His eyes they uttered the words: / “What king do we have in heaven?” They spoke arrogantly of the King’s throne, / saying, “There is no other king but me; / no other king but I alone.” O You who are loftier than any earthly king, / remove them and they shall no longer rule, / and reclaim the reign for Yourself alone.
Awaken and sound the shofar, cut down all evildoers, and be sanctified by those who know to observe the sounding of the shofar. O Holy One.
And so – The Lord remembered Sarah, just as He had said. So may He remember her offspring favorably on this day. O Holy One.
O matriarch who aged in righteousness, / though she had lost hope, she was finally granted fecundity, when He who brought her forth, remembered her on Rosh HaShana.
It was this very day when she said, “Behold I am condemned / to remain wretched as my youth comes to an end.” You sealed her judgment righteously so she would not resort to reclusion.
Just as she was informed by Your messengers, so did it come to pass. / She made haste to entreat the Pure One, but her request was granted before she began her prayer.
All who heard of her joy laughed and rejoiced, / for all childless women did bloom, though their time had passed, and all called out to her, “The mother of sons is joyous.”
She found her peace though she had already begun to lose the freshness of youth, / and her beauty was renewed like an eagle, as women of noble birth rejoiced in her company.
Exult and rejoice, they cried to her, / and shouted, “Sing joyfully, you who were formerly barren.” And when the milk of their breasts ceased, her value rose in their eyes even more.
The woman of bitter spirit who had been childless, / was healed after ninety years when God rewarded her, and she sent forth shoots that neither disappointed nor deceived.
Turn Your eyes to the offspring – our ancestors – who were born on this day, / and recall the three barren women [Sarah, Rachel and Hannah] whose prayers were answered this day, and by their merit may those who await You be vindicated, O Awesome One.

The Mighty One does not despise / anyone who is lowly in his own eyes. Glorious, He rides the heavens, / fiery flames and bright light shine before Him. He cuts down the evil with sharpened swords / on behalf of the orphans and the widows. He offers man recompense for all his deeds, / He creates mouths to speak and renders speakers dumb. He created all with compassion, / He is lofty, and lays lofty ones low. He pardons His creatures with grace, / the works of the true God are perfect. The earthly judges are vacant in His presence, / astounded and affrighted in their awe of Him. He takes up the cause of His nation, / judging them first to spare them His wrath. May it be soon in our days, and may You dwell there for ever and all time. May You be exalted and sanctified in the midst of Jerusalem, Your city, from generation to generation for evermore. May our eyes see Your kingdom, as is said in the songs of Your splendor, written by David Your righteous anointed one:

From generation to generation we will declare Your greatness, and we will proclaim Your holiness for evermore. Your praise, our God, shall not leave our mouth forever, for You, God, are a great and holy King.
And so place the fear of You, LORD our God, over all that You have made, and the terror of You over all You have created, and all who were made will stand in awe of You, and all of creation will worship You, and they will be bound all together as one to carry out Your will with an undivided heart; for we know, LORD our God, that all dominion is laid out before You, strength is in Your palm, and might in Your right hand, Your name spreading awe over all You have created.

Our God and God of our fathers, bless us with the threefold blessing in the Torah, written by the hand of Moses Your servant and pronounced by Aaron and his sons the priests, Your holy people, as it is said:
May the LORD bless you and protect you. Cong: May it be Your will. May the LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. Cong: May it be Your will. May the LORD turn His face toward you, and grant you peace. Cong: May it be Your will.
