When I proclaim the LORD’s name, give glory to our God. O LORD, open my lips, so that my mouth may declare Your praise.

PATRIARCHS

בָּרוּךְ Blessed are You, LORD our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob; the great, mighty and awesome God, God Most High, who bestows acts of loving-kindness and creates all, who remembers the loving-kindness of the fathers and will bring a Redeemer to their children’s children for the sake of His name, in love.

מִסּוֹד Drawing from the counsel of wise and knowing men, from the teachings born of insight among those who understand, I open my mouth now in prayer and pleading, to implore and to plead before the King who pardons and forgives iniquities.

אָב יְדָעֲךָ Our forefather [Abraham] who recognized You from his youth, You tested with ten trials that he passed without flaw. He turned to You as a youth, and not as a boor, so that his children could enter through this gate [of righteousness].

Your faithful come to exalt You, O Awesome One, to praise You throughout this day; now that this day is fading away, / protect us, in the merit of [Abraham] who sat [waiting] in the heat of the day.

זָכְרֵֽנוּ לְחַיִּים Remember us for life, O King who desires life, and seal us in the book of life – for Your sake, O God of life.

King, Helper, Savior, Shield: Blessed are You, LORD, Shield of Abraham.

DIVINE MIGHT

אַתָּה גִּבּוֹר You are eternally mighty, LORD. You give life to the dead and have great power to save.

In Israel:

He causes the dew to fall.

He sustains the living with loving-kindness, and with great compassion revives the dead. He supports the fallen, heals the sick, sets captives free, and keeps His faith with those who sleep in the dust.

Who is like You, Master of might, and who can compare to You, O King who brings death and gives life, and makes salvation grow?

הַנִּקְרָא Our forefather [Isaac] who continued his father’s name, and who turned away from all evil obstacles, cried out, entreated and did not spare his prayer, received increased blessings from that which he sowed.

O LORD, may Your name always remain among us, and bring Your salvation close to us. Redeem us, please, from among enemies; revive us with Your dew as You did [for Isaac] who prayed toward evening.

מִי כָמֽוֹךָ Who is like You, compassionate Father, who remembers His creatures in compassion, for life?

Faithful are You to revive the dead. Blessed are You, LORD, who revives the dead.

טֶֽבַע The likeness of [Jacob’s] radiant countenance the LORD engraved in His precious throne. When he, the perfect one, saw the awe of that place, he rose from sleep, beheld it and was awestruck.

יִמְלֹךְ The LORD shall reign for ever. He is your God, Zion, from generation to generation, Halleluya!

וְאַתָּה You are the Holy One, enthroned on the praises of Israel. God, please.

שְׁמַע Listen, please; forgive, please, on this day; for the day is fading away. And we shall praise You, Awesome, Terrifying One; O Holy One.

וּבְכֵן לְךָ And so, sanctity will rise up to You, for You, our God, are the King who pardons and forgives.

שַׁעֲרֵי אַרְמוֹן Let the gates of the palace be speedily thrown open to those who expound the faithful Torah.

Let the [heavenly] gates of Your hidden treasures be speedily thrown open to those who cling to Your law.

Let the beautiful gates of Your Sanctuary be speedily thrown open to Your congregated faithful.

Let the gates of Your heavenly encampments be speedily thrown open for those with reddened eyes [from Torah study].

Let the gates of purity be speedily thrown open to Your fair, pure [people].

Let the gates to Your mighty crown be speedily thrown open for the people not widowed [abandoned by You].

And by these shall You be revered and sanctified, with the words uttered by the holy Seraphim who sanctify Your name in the Sanctuary,

KEDUSHA

(נַעֲרִיצְךָ We will revere and sanctify You with the words uttered by the holy Seraphim who sanctify Your name in the Sanctuary,) as is written by Your prophet: “They call out to one another, saying:

Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole world is filled with His glory.” His glory fills the universe. His ministering angels ask each other, “Where is the place of His glory?” Those facing them reply “Blessed –

“Blessed is the LORD’s glory from His place.” From His place may He turn with compassion and be gracious to the people who proclaim the unity of His name, morning and evening, every day, continually, twice each day reciting in love the Shema:

“Listen, Israel, the LORD is our God, the LORD is One.” He is our God, He is our Father, He is our King, He is our Savior – and He, in His compassion, will let us hear a second time in the presence of all that lives, His promise “to be Your God. I am the LORD your God.”

Glorious is our Glorious One, LORD our Master, and glorious is Your name throughout the earth. Then the LORD shall be King over all the earth; on that day the LORD shall be One and His name One.

And in Your holy Writings it is written:

“The LORD shall reign for ever. He is your God, Zion, from generation to generation, Halleluya!”

From generation to generation we will declare Your greatness, and we will proclaim Your holiness for evermore. Your praise, our God, shall not leave our mouth forever, for You, God, are a great and holy King.

חֲמֹל Have mercy on those You have made, take joy in those You made, and those who shelter in You will say, as You absolve the ones You bear, “Be sanctified, LORD, through all that You have made.”

כִּי מַקְדִּישֶֽׁיךָ For with Your holiness You sanctify all who affirm You holy; it is fitting that the Holy One be glorified by holy ones.

בְּאֵין With no one to advocate for us against the accuser of sin, speak words of law and of justice to Jacob; and absolve us in the judgment, O King of judgment.

עוֹד He, our LORD, will yet remember for us the love of [Abraham] the steadfast one. And for [Isaac] the son who was bound, He will still the enmity against us. And for the merit of [Jacob] the innocent man, He will bring today our judgment out to the good, for this day is holy to our LORD.

וּבְכֵן יִתְקַדַּשׁ And so may Your name be sanctified, Lord our God, through Israel Your nation and Jerusalem, Your city, and Zion, the dwelling place of Your honor and through the royal house of David Your anointed, and Your Sanctuary and Your Temple.

HOLINESS

וּבְכֵן תֵּן פַּחְדְּךָ And so place the fear of You, LORD our God, over all that You have made, and the terror of You over all You have created, and all who were made will stand in awe of You, and all of creation will worship You, and they will be bound all together as one to carry out Your will with an undivided heart; for we know, LORD our God, that all dominion is laid out before You, strength is in Your palm, and might in Your right hand, Your name spreading awe over all You have created.

וּבְכֵן תֵּן כָּבוֹד And so place honor, LORD, upon Your people, praise on those who fear You and hope into those who seek You, the confidence to speak into all who long for You, gladness to Your land and joy to Your city, the flourishing of pride to David Your servant, and a lamp laid out for his descendant, Your anointed, soon, in our days.

וּבְכֵן צַדִּיקִים And then righteous people will see and rejoice, and the upright will exult, and the pious revel in joy, and injustice will have nothing more to say, and all wickedness will fade away like smoke as You sweep the rule of arrogance from the earth.

וְתִמְלֹךְ And You, LORD, will rule alone over those You have made, in Mount Zion, the dwelling of Your glory, and in Jerusalem, Your holy city, as it is written in Your holy writings: “The LORD shall reign for ever. He is your God, Zion, from generation to generation, Halleluya!”

קָדוֹשׁ אַתָּה You are holy, Your name is awesome, and there is no god but You, as it is written, “The LORD of hosts shall be raised up through His judgment, the holy God, made holy in righteousness.” Blessed are You, LORD, the holy King.

HOLINESS OF THE DAY

אַתָּה בְחַרְתָּֽנוּ You have chosen us from among all peoples. You have loved and favored us. You have raised us above all tongues. You have made us holy through Your commandments. You have brought us near, our King, to Your service, and have called us by Your great and holy name.

וַתִּתֶּן לָֽנוּ And You, LORD our God, have given us in love (this Sabbath day for holiness and rest, and) this Day of Atonement for pardon and forgiveness and atonement, to pardon all our iniquities, (with love,) a holy assembly in memory of the exodus from Egypt.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ Our God and God of our ancestors, may there rise, come, reach, appear, be favored, heard, regarded and remembered before You, our recollection and remembrance, as well as the remembrance of our ancestors, and of the Messiah, son of David Your servant, and of Jerusalem Your holy city, and of all Your people the house of Israel – for deliverance and well-being, grace, loving-kindness and compassion, life and peace, on this Day of Atonement. On it remember us, LORD our God, for good; recollect us for blessing, and deliver us for life. In accord with Your promise of salvation and compassion, spare us and be gracious to us; have compassion on us and deliver us, for our eyes are turned to You because You, God, are a gracious and compassionate King.

Open us a gate / at the time of the locking of the gate, for day is passing.

The day will pass; / the sun will set and pass; we will come before Your gates.

We beg of You, God, please; forbear, please; forgive, please; pardon, please; spare, please, have compassion, please, atone, please; overcome sin and iniquity.

כְּרַחֵם As a father has compassion for his children, so, LORD, have compassion for us. Salvation belongs to the LORD; may Your blessing rest upon Your people, Selah! The LORD of hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our stronghold, Selah! LORD of hosts: happy is the one who trusts in You. LORD, save! May the King answer us on the day we call.

סְלַח־נָא Forgive, please, this people’s iniquity, in the abundance of Your kindness, and as You have forgiven this people from the time of Egypt until now, and there it is said:

And the LORD said, I have forgiven as you asked.

הַטֵּה Give ear, my God and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolation, and the city that bears Your name, for it is not on the strength of our righteousness that we throw down our pleadings before You, but on the strength of Your great compassion. LORD, hear me; LORD, forgive; LORD, listen and act and do not delay – for Your sake, my God; for Your city and Your people bear Your name.

וּמִי יַעֲמֹד Who could stand before You, if You retained every sin? And who could rise, if judgment were applied fully? Forgiveness is with You; it is for You to say, “I have forgiven” – compassion, too, is with You; it is Your way to soften Your heart.

See the mournfulness of our destitution, do not shame us further; fulfill our desire to know the course of Your path. Strengthen for both old and young the spirit of wisdom – may it be Your will to reinforce and fortify Your mighty ones.

Let the repentant sit in Your shade, receive them willingly, so they can flower in Your House and no longer languish. For those lost and exiled, end oppression and persecution – then they will go up and appear [before You], with a willing spirit.

מְרֻבִּים Your people’s needs are many, but they do not now have the presence of mind to relate their requests and faults, which are too numerous; divine our meaning before we even cry out to You, O great, mighty and awesome God.

Those who knew how to pray have passed away and gone, those who knew how to arrange the prayers upon their tongues. We are left naked, and our evil has increased within us; therefore we have not reached salvation.

We are too ashamed to entreat You; we have sinned and rebelled, twisted our paths. we can only ask for Your righteousness in arranging our praise, we who nightly stand in the House of the Lord.

Holy One, see how we have no fitting advocate; accept my words as though a great offering. May my song today be an adornment in Your crown, O God girded with strength.

Hear my cry and let my prayer be pleasing; listen to my plea as though it were a perfect prayer. Engrave us [in the book of] life and seal us well within it, You who suspends the earth over nothingness.

גּוֹאֵל חָזָק Mighty Redeemer, for Your sake save us; see that our hands are powerless. Behold how the righteous among us are gone, and we have no leader to pray on our behalf.

Have compassion once more on the remnant of Israel, and save us for the sake of Your name.

The holy city, its Sanctuary and environs / were shamed and plundered; all her treasures have disappeared or been hidden, and nothing remains but this Torah.

Bring back the peace of the tents of Jacob, and save us for the sake of Your name.

אֶנְקַת Let the groaning of those who revere You rise up before the throne of Your glory. Grant the people who unify You all that they ask; hear the prayer of those who come before You.

Israel, whose salvation is in the LORD, eternal salvation; this day too they beseech You, You who dwell on high. For You are the One who abundantly forgives, the Master of compassion.

Let the shade of His hands shelter us, beneath the wings of the Divine Presence. As He tries us, let Him be gracious, and make firm again the deceitful heart. Rise up please, our God, strengthen; please, give me strength – LORD, listen to our plea.

May He let us hear Him say “I have forgiven” – He who dwells concealed, Most High. Let the right hand of Your salvation save / this poor and downtrodden people. As we plead with You, / answer us in Your righteousness with wonders; LORD, be help to us.

We are brazen and You are compassionate, gracious. We are stubborn and You are long forbearing. We are as full of iniquity as You are full of compassion. Our days are like a fleeting shadow. But You are here, and Your years will not end.

VIDUY

Viduy אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ Our God and God of our fathers, let our prayer come before You, and do not hide Yourself from our plea, for we are not so arrogant or obstinate as to say before You, LORD, our God and God of our fathers, we are righteous and have not sinned, for in truth, we and our fathers have sinned.

אָשַֽׁמְנוּ We have sinned, we have acted treacherously, we have robbed, we have spoken slander. We have acted perversely, we have acted wickedly, we have acted presumptuously, we have been violent, we have framed lies. We have given bad advice, we have deceived, we have scorned, we have rebelled, we have provoked, we have turned away, we have committed iniquity, we have transgressed, we have persecuted, we have been obstinate. We have acted wickedly, we have corrupted, we have acted abominably, we have strayed, we have led others astray.

סַֽרְנוּ We have turned away from Your commandments and good laws, to no avail, for You are just in all that has befallen us, for You have acted faithfully while we have done wickedly.

מַה נֹּאמַר What can we say before You, You who dwell on high? What can we declare before You, You who abide in heaven? Do You not know all, the hidden and revealed alike?

You give Your hand to help transgressors; Your right hand is outstretched to receive those who return. And You have taught us, LORD our God, to confess before You all our iniquities, that we may end the oppression that is in our hands, and that You may receive us back in perfect repentance before You, like burnt offerings and their sweet savor, for the sake of the words You have spoken. There is no end to the burnt offerings we owe You, no number to the guilt-offerings of sweet savor. And You know that our end will be with maggots and worms. And so You forgive us again and again.

What are we? What are our lives? What is our loving-kindness? What is our righteousness? What is our salvation? What is our strength? What is our might? What shall we say before You, LORD our God and God of our ancestors? Are not all the mighty like nothing before You, the men of renown as if they had never been, the wise as if they know nothing, and the understanding as if they lack intelligence? For their many works are in vain, and the days of their lives like a fleeting breath before You. The pre-eminence of man over the animals is nothing, for all is but a fleeting breath.

You have separated man out from the outset; You have recognized him, had him stand before You. For who can tell You what You are to do; and even if one proves righteous – what can he give You? And You, LORD our God, have given us in love (on Shabbat: this Sabbath day and) this Day of Atonement, to be the end, the pardon and forgiveness of all our iniquities, that we may end the oppression that is in our hands, and return to You, to fulfill the laws of Your will wholeheartedly; and You, in Your great compassion, have compassion for us, for You will not desire the destruction of the world, as it is said: “Seek out the LORD when He is to be found; call out to Him now when He is close.” And it is said: “Let each wicked person abandon his ways, each man of iniquity his thoughts, and let him come back to the LORD and He will have compassion for him; back to our God for He will forgive abundantly.” And You, God of forgiveness, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving-kindness and truth and doing abundant good for us; You desire the repentance of the wicked and do not desire their death, as it is said: “Say to them, as I live – says the LORD God – I do not desire the death of the wicked, but that the wicked should come back from his way and live. Repent, repent your evil ways; why should you die, O house of Israel?’” And it is said: “Do I desire the wicked man’s death? – says the LORD God – Do I not desire him to come back from his ways and live?” And it is said: “For I do not desire the condemned man’s death – says the LORD God – Repent, and live.” For You are the Forgiver of Israel and the Pardoner of the tribes of Yeshurun in every generation, and without You we have no king who pardons and forgives, none but You.

Our God and God of our ancestors, pardon our iniquities on (this Sabbath day, and on) this Day of Atonement; wipe away and remove all our transgressions and sins from before Your eyes, as it is said: “I, I am the One who shall wipe out your transgressions for My sake, and I shall not recall your sins.” And it is said: “I have wiped out your transgressions like a cloud, and as a haze your sins; come back to Me for I have redeemed you.” And it is said: “For on this day you will be atoned and made pure; of all your sins before the LORD you shall be purified.” (ּOur God and God of our ancestors, may You find favor in our rest.) Make us holy through Your commandments and grant us our share in Your Torah. Satisfy us with Your goodness, grant us joy in Your salvation (in love and favor, LORD our God, grant us as our heritage Your holy Sabbaths, so that Israel, who sanctify Your name, may find rest on them), and purify our hearts to serve You in truth. For You are the Forgiver of Israel and the Pardoner of the tribes of Yeshurun in every generation, and without You we have no king who pardons and forgives, none but You. Blessed are You, LORD, King who pardons and forgives our iniquities and those of all His people the house of Israel, and makes our guilt pass away, every single year, King of all the earth, who sanctifies (the Sabbath,) Israel and the Day of Atonement.

TEMPLE SERVICE

רְצֵה Find favor, LORD our God, in Your people Israel and their prayer. Restore the service to Your most holy House, and accept in love and favor the fire-offerings of Israel and their prayer. May the service of Your people Israel always find favor with You. And may our eyes witness Your return to Zion in compassion. Blessed are You, LORD, who restores His Presence to Zion.

THANKSGIVING

מוֹדִים We give thanks to You, for You are the LORD our God and God of our ancestors for ever and all time. You are the Rock of our lives, Shield of our salvation from generation to generation. We will thank You and declare Your praise for our lives, which are entrusted into Your hand; for our souls, which are placed in Your charge; for Your miracles which are with us every day; and for Your wonders and favors at all times, evening, morning and midday. You are good – for Your compassion never fails. You are compassionate – for Your loving-kindnesses never cease. We have always placed our hope in You.

מוֹדִים We give thanks to You, for You are the LORD our God and God of our ancestors, God of all flesh, who formed us and formed the universe. Blessings and thanks are due to Your great and holy name for giving us life and sustaining us. May You continue to give us life and sustain us; and may You gather our exiles to Your holy courts, to keep Your decrees, do Your will and serve You with a perfect heart, for it is for us to give You thanks. Blessed be God to whom thanks­giving is due.

וְעַל כֻּלָּם For all these things may Your name be blessed and exalted, our King, continually, for ever and all time.

אָבִֽינוּ מַלְכֵּֽנוּ Our Father, our King, remember Your compassion and overcome Your anger, and efface pestilence, sword, famine, captivity and destruction, iniquity and plague, and bad mishap and all illness, and any harm, and any feud, and all kinds of afflictions, and all harsh decrees and baseless hatred, from us and from all the people of Your covenant.

וַחֲתֹם And seal, for a good life, all the children of Your covenant.

Let all that lives thank You, Selah! and praise Your name in truth, God, our Savior and Help, Selah! Blessed are You, LORD, whose name is “the Good” and to whom thanks are due.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ Our God and God of our fathers, bless us with the threefold blessing in the Torah, written by the hand of Moses Your servant and pronounced by Aaron and his sons the priests, Your holy people, as it is said:

May the LORD bless you and protect you. Cong: May it be Your will.

May the LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. Cong: May it be Your will.

May the LORD turn His face toward you, and grant you peace. Cong: May it be Your will.

PEACE

שִׂים שָׁלוֹם Grant peace, goodness and blessing, grace, loving-kindness and compassion to us and all Israel Your people. Bless us, our Father, all as one, with the light of Your face, for by the light of Your face You have given us, LORD our God, the Torah of life and love of kindness, righteousness, blessing, compassion, life and peace. May it be good in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel at every time, in every hour, with Your peace.

בְּסֵֽפֶר חַיִּים In the book of life, blessing, peace and prosperity, may we and all Your people the house of Israel be remembered and sealed before You for a good life, and for peace.*

Blessed are You, LORD, who blesses His people Israel with peace.

Blessed are You, LORD, who makes peace.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart find favor before You, LORD, my Rock and Redeemer.
