The Power of Saying "I'm In" [Day 162 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Repentance 19]

In this lesson from the Gate of Repentance (Shaar HaTeshuvah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe presents the third source of inspiration for teshuvah: allowing oneself to be awakened by the wisdom, guidance, and rebuke of righteous people. One heartfelt lecture, one sincere conversation, or one moment of clarity can transform a person's life forever. Rabbi Wolbe shares a personal story of hearing a Torah lecture as a teenager that completely changed his perspective, awakening him to the realization that Judaism is not merely a tradition but a living relationship with Hashem. The greatest blessing is not simply hearing words of inspiration—it is having the humility to accept them and immediately begin the journey of change.

A central theme of the episode is the Torah's emphasis on acting immediately when inspiration strikes. Rabbi Wolbe explains the significance of the Jewish people's declaration at Mount Sinai, "Na'aseh v'Nishma"—"We will do, and then we will understand." Likewise, when the Torah says that the Jewish people "went and did," the Sages explain that although the mitzvah itself was performed two weeks later, Hashem considered it as though it had already been accomplished because they had wholeheartedly committed themselves to fulfilling it. Hashem treasures sincere commitment. The moment a person genuinely resolves to change—even before mastering every detail—their decision is already precious in Heaven.

The lesson concludes with an encouraging message for anyone seeking to grow in Judaism. Rabbi Wolbe reminds listeners that commitment comes before expertise. A person does not need to know every law before deciding to keep Shabbos, wear tefillin, keep kosher, or deepen their Torah observance. The first step is simply saying, "I'm in." Learning the details comes afterward. Hashem values a willing heart and an open spirit. Conversely, the greatest spiritual danger is closing oneself off to growth, refusing guidance, or ignoring opportunities for improvement. True teshuvah begins the moment we decide that we are ready to change.
