The Hardest Part of Repentance—Owning Your Mistakes [Day 174 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Repentance 31]

In this lesson from the Gate of Repentance (Shaar HaTeshuvah), Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe presents the Torah's comprehensive framework for teshuvah and vidui (confession). Whether a person violates a positive commandment or a prohibition, intentionally or unintentionally, genuine repentance requires more than remorse. The Torah commands a person to confess before Hashem, acknowledge the specific wrongdoing, regret the action, and sincerely resolve never to repeat it. Rabbi Wolbe explains that verbal confession is not merely symbolic—it is the process of taking complete ownership of one's actions before the Almighty.

The Orchot Tzaddikim teaches that confession should be specific rather than vague. Instead of simply saying, "I have sinned," a person should identify the actual mistake—whether it involved dishonesty, forbidden speech, Shabbos observance, jealousy, theft, or any other transgression. Rabbi Wolbe explains that this honest self-examination transforms confession into a meaningful encounter with Hashem. When we clearly identify our failures, we become far more capable of correcting them. The goal is not to dwell on guilt but to create lasting personal change through sincere accountability.

The chapter concludes with one of the most profound insights of the entire Gate of Repentance: changing our character traits is often more difficult than correcting individual actions. Sins may occur occasionally, but negative traits such as anger, arrogance, jealousy, resentment, or selfishness become deeply ingrained habits developed over a lifetime. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that conquering these traits requires exceptional strength, persistence, and humility. Yet precisely because this work is so difficult, it is among the greatest accomplishments a person can achieve in serving Hashem. True teshuvah is not only about changing what we do—it is about transforming who we become.
