Now the Pelishtim fought against Yisra᾽el; and the men of Yisra᾽el fled from before the Pelishtim and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.
[viz. I Samuel 31] And the Philistines warred with Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines, and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
And the Pelishtim followed hard after Sha᾽ul, and after his sons; and the Pelishtim slew Yonatan, and Avinadav, and Malki-shua, the sons of Sha᾽ul.
And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines smote Jonathan and Avinadav and Malkishua, the sons of Saul.
And the battle went hard against Sha᾽ul, and the archers hit him, and he was in dread because of the archers.
And the battle pressed hard on Saul, and he was found by archers, and he was sorely wounded by the archers.
Then Sha᾽ul said to his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and pierce me with it; lest these uncircumcised ones come and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was much afraid. So Sha᾽ul took a sword, and fell upon it.
And Saul said to his weapon bearer: Draw your sword and run me through with it, lest these uncircumcised ones come and run me through and abuse me. But his weapon bearer would not, for he feared greatly. And Saul took the sword and he fell upon it.
וַיַּ֥רְא נֹשֵֽׂא־כֵלָ֖יו כִּ֣י מֵ֣ת שָׁא֑וּל וַיִּפֹּ֥ל גַּם־ה֛וּא עַל־הַחֶ֖רֶב וַיָּמֹֽת׃{ס}
And when his armourbearer saw that Sha᾽ul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.
And when his weapon bearer saw that Saul had died, he, too, fell on his sword and died.
So Sha᾽ul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.
And Saul died, and his three sons, and all his household; together they died.
וַ֠יִּרְא֠וּ כׇּל־אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־בָּעֵ֙מֶק֙ כִּ֣י נָ֔סוּ וְכִי־מֵ֖תוּ שָׁא֣וּל וּבָנָ֑יו וַיַּעַזְב֤וּ עָֽרֵיהֶם֙ וַיָּנֻ֔סוּ וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ בָּהֶֽם׃{ס}
And when all the men of Yisra᾽el who were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Sha᾽ul and his sons were dead, then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Pelishtim came and dwelt in them.
And all the men of Israel in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, and they left their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Pelishtim came to strip the slain, that they found Sha᾽ul and his sons fallen on mount Gilboa.
And it was on the morrow that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
And when they had stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, and sent into the land of the Pelishtim round about, to carry tidings to their idols, and to the people.
And they stripped him, and they took up his head and his armor, and they sent [them by messenger] in the land of the Philistines roundabout to apprise [the men of] their [houses of] idolatry and the people.
וַיָּשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ אֶת־כֵּלָ֔יו בֵּ֖ית אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וְאֶת־גֻּלְגׇּלְתּ֥וֹ תָקְע֖וּ בֵּ֥ית דָּגֽוֹן׃{ס}
And they put his armour in the house of their gods, and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon.
And they put his armor in the house of their god, and they stuck his skull in the house of Dagon.
And when all Yavesh-gil῾ad heard all that the Pelishtim had done to Sha᾽ul,
And all of Yavesh-gilead heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul.
they arose, all the men at arms, and took away the body of Sha᾽ul, and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Yavesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth in Yavesh, and fasted seven days.
And all the men of valor arose and took up Saul's body and the bodies of his sons and brought them to Yavesh, and they buried their bones under the oak in Yavesh, and they fasted seven days.
So Sha᾽ul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, against the word of the Lord, which he did not keep, and also for asking counsel of a medium, to make inquiry;
And Saul died because of his faithlessness, wherein he was faithless to the L-rd, not having kept the word of the L-rd, and, also, having inquired of the ov [viz. I Samuel 28:7].
וְלֹא־דָרַ֥שׁ בַּיהֹוָ֖ה וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ וַיַּסֵּב֙ אֶת־הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה לְדָוִ֖יד בֶּן־יִשָֽׁי׃{פ}
and he inquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Yishay.
And he did not inquire of the L-rd, and He slew him, and He transferred the reign to David the son of Yishai.
