The Talmud teaches, “Groaning breaks a man’s body” (Berakhot 55b; Ketubot 62a).

לְעִנְיַן מַה שֶּׁאָמְרוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ ז"ל (בְּרָכוֹת נה: כְּתֻבּוֹת סב.) 'אֲנָחָה שׁוֹבֶרֶת גּוּפוֹ שֶׁל אָדָם', סִפֵּר שֶׁאֶצְלוֹ הָיָה כָּךְ מַמָּשׁ.

כִּי בִּימֵי נְעוּרָיו בְּעֵת שֶׁיָּגַע בַּעֲבוֹדַת ה', הָיָה לִפְעָמִים עוֹשֶׂה אֵיזֶה אֲנָחָה, וְאַחַר כָּךְ הָיָה מְנַסֶּה עַצְמוֹ אִם יוּכַל לְהַגְבִּיהַּ יָדָיו וְלֹא הָיָה יָכוֹל אָז לְהַגְבִּיהַּ יָדָיו, כִּי גּוּפוֹ הָיָה מִשְׁתַּבֵּר בֶּאֱמֶת מַמָּשׁ מֵחֲמַת אַנְחָתוֹ.

In his youth, while striving to serve God, he would spend much time sighing and groaning. He would then test himself to see if he could lift his hand. His body was so broken and subjugated that he could not do even this simple task.
