Allegory: This Song is divided into five songs. It is called the Song of Songs because it is a song that contains within itself the songs of Solomon. In this song it is related that King Solomon loved a certain maiden, the fairest among women. He confined her within his royal palace and stationed the daughters of Jerusalem around her as guards. Yet she was the beloved of another, a shepherd who tended his flock in the wilderness. Five times she fled from the king’s palace into the wilderness to her beloved. In the first four instances she was brought back to the king’s court, but in the fifth they were unable to restrain her. She departed and never returned. In each song the narrative recounts how she went out into the wilderness and was reunited with her beloved.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

The first song extends until “The voice of my beloved is knocking” (2:8). It recounts how the beloved fled for the first time, the manner in which she escaped, how she was reunited with her beloved, and how she was brought back by the daughters of Jerusalem who were guarding her.

Figurative Meaning: This song is divided into five songs. In his composition, Solomon relates that King Solomon—that is, the inclination and appetitive faculty of Solomon's body—loved a certain companion, a daughter of heaven: his spiritual, Divine soul, which was confined within his body, the seat of the inclination's kingdom and dominion. He stationed around her the daughters of Jerusalem, namely the various material faculties, as guards, in order to immerse her in materiality and draw her after his will, making her his concubine. Yet she was bound with cords of love to her Beloved in heaven, the Shepherd of the hosts whom He created. Five times she departed from the body, which is the palace of the inclination that reigns there, and was united with her Beloved who dwells in the heavenly realms of old. During the first four occasions she separated from the body while Solomon was still alive, when the Divine spirit came upon him through four prophetic revelations. Each time she returned to the body when the vision ceased, as the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, the material faculties—awoke from their slumber. On the fifth occasion, however, she departed and separated from the body when Solomon was gathered to his people. Then she cleaved to her God in the bundle of life forever. In each song he describes how she stripped herself of materiality and was united with her Beloved face to face.

The First Song extends until “The voice of my beloved is knocking” (2:8). It recounts how the heavenly beloved—the soul—separated herself from the body for the first time through the first vision in which Hashem appeared to Solomon in a dream by night at Gibeon, as recorded in 1 Kings 3 and 2 Chronicles 1. It describes the nature of this vision, how she was united with the Holy One and the Spirit rested upon her, and how she afterward returned to the body, so that Solomon awoke and behold—it was a dream.

Allegory: “Let him kiss me”—Her beloved, the shepherd, stands behind the door and the doorpost, and she senses his presence through his fragrant oils whose sweet aroma reaches her. She says, “Would that he might draw near to me face to face and kiss me with kisses of love.” Then, turning toward him directly, she says: “Your love is better than wine”—your affection and love are better to me than all the wine and pleasures that I enjoy in the king's palace.

Figurative Meaning: “Let him kiss me”—The heavenly Beloved watches over His beloved, Solomon’s soul, standing behind her walls, for the wall—that is, the material body—separates the Divine beloved from her Beloved and Companion. Yet she perceives Him through His poured-out oil and its sweet fragrance. Therefore she asks, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.” The soul’s knowledge of God may be attained in two ways. The first is through intellect, understanding, and contemplation. By this means, one does not grasp God Himself, nor even know Him directly, but only through the signs of wisdom, power, and will that are manifest in His governance of the world. This is symbolized by fragrance. Even when the fragrant object remains hidden from sight, one nevertheless knows with certainty that it exists because its pleasant aroma reaches the sense of smell. Likewise, the wise perceive the spirituality of God through the sweet fragrance—that is, the perfect order and governance—that flows from His wisdom throughout creation. Those who possess the fear of God discern it, as the poet said: “With all my strength I will serve my God; I will ascend to my Father’s house in pillars of smoke, the cloud of incense whose fragrance reaches my nostrils.” He means that the pillar of incense serves as the link between the soul and God; through it the soul senses Him, recognizes Him, and perceives His fragrance. There is, however, a higher form of knowledge, symbolized by a kiss, in which the lovers draw near face to face in wondrous longing. This occurs when God pours out His spirit upon souls that have prepared and sanctified themselves for prophecy and Divine inspiration. Then the soul departs from its earthly state and cleaves to the exalted intellect and to the Holy of Holies. Therefore she prays, “Would that He might kiss me”—and, as the Midrash explains, “attach me”—“with the kisses of His mouth.” These kisses themselves have many degrees and many levels through which prophets and visionaries behold and perceive according to the measure of closeness, longing, and attachment between God and the soul that cleaves to Him. Hence the phrase “with the kisses of His mouth.” She now turns her speech toward the Beloved who stands beside the wall of her body and says, “Your love is better than wine.” Wine elevates the powers of the soul, kindles natural heat, and gladdens the spirit of man. Yet this excitement is a foreign fire, for it rises from below upward, from the body toward the soul. Therefore it is a foreign fire and a profane joy. Not so the soul’s fervor and joy through the resting of the Holy Spirit and prophecy. That is the joy of Hashem and the gladness of holiness, descending from above downward, a Divine fire that spreads from the soul into the body until the pillars of the body tremble and submit beneath the soul’s holiness. Therefore, “Your love is better than wine.”

Allegory: “Because of the fragrance”—At present, although you are not seen and people perceive from you only the fragrance of your sweet and fragrant oils, and their knowledge of you comes only through your good name, which is like poured-out oil whose scent spreads afar, nevertheless the maidens—who occupy a higher rank than the daughters—have loved you. How much more would they love you if they were to behold you directly and perceive your beauty and excellence in your own person. Therefore I ask:

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Because of the fragrance”—She explains her words and why she longs for these kisses and for the spiritual wine that gladdens the soul and the spirit. It is because she and her maiden companions—the faculties of wisdom, understanding, and knowledge—have already perceived Him through the effects that proceed from Him, even though they have not known His essence face to face. Thus she says, “Because of the fragrance of your good oils.” Oil symbolizes the Divine effluence poured forth upon creation, together with the light and spirituality concealed within it. “Your name is like poured-out oil.” That is, You have no name by which Your essence can be known directly, for You are recognized and made known only through the outpouring of the oil—that is, through the abundance, influence, and spirituality that You pour forth upon all creation. Therefore, “the maidens love You.” These maidens are the intellectual faculties that serve the spiritual soul. They love You because they have recognized Your glory and excellence through the fragrance—the signs of wisdom and providential governance that are visible in Your works. Through intellect and contemplation they have come to know You, even though they have not attained direct knowledge of Your essence through prophecy. For intellectual knowledge remains dependent upon matter, which stands as a separating screen between them and the pure apprehension by which the glory of God is perceived as it truly is. Therefore, she continues her request:

Allegory: “Draw me”—Take me out from this confinement, from the chambers of Solomon, and then, when I am free and can behold you face to face, “we will run after you”—I and my maiden companions. She explains why she asks him to draw her forth into freedom: “The king has brought me into his chambers.” I am imprisoned within Solomon's rooms and cannot leave by my own power. Then, when we are free, “we will rejoice and be glad in you,” for the true joy that we derive from you is greater than the joy found in Solomon's chambers, whose worth is not intrinsic but only imagined. (The term “rejoice” refers to delight in something newly attained, while “be glad” denotes an enduring joy. Thus she means that afterward we shall continue to rejoice in you continually.) “We will remember your love more than wine,” for we shall cherish your love above wine and every other pleasure. “The upright love you.” That is, their love for you is unlike their love for Solomon. They do not love Solomon for his own sake, but because of the benefit, pleasure, and advantage they receive from him. But you are loved with a straight and upright love, for the sake of your own intrinsic excellence and worth.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Draw me”—Draw me out from this confinement, which is the material body that stands as a barrier between me and the visions of God. This occurs when the prophetic influence comes to rest upon the soul, for then, when the Spirit rests upon her, she is able to separate herself from the body, which is Solomon’s chamber. Draw me away from it into spiritual communion, and then “we will run after you”—I and my maiden companions, the intellectual faculties, will hasten after Hashem. For now, while the intellect remains immersed in matter, the intellectual powers advance only slowly and with great difficulty in their understanding. The dust weighs them down, and the physical obstructs their movement. Knowledge acquired through rational inquiry proceeds step by step, from one concept to another, from one inference to the next. Not so prophetic knowledge: when the cloud of materiality is lifted from the soul, all things are grasped in a simple and immediate perception, with great swiftness and speed. She explains the reason for her request: “The king has brought me into his chambers.” The great king who has surrounded the city of Jerusalem—that is, the appetitive faculty and inclination that rules within the body—has brought me in and confined me in the prison-house of his chambers. Thus I cannot go out to my Beloved, nor can I attain a pure and true knowledge of God and His truth. This king has taken me as his concubine and my maidens as his servants, using them according to his pleasure. Therefore, “Draw me.” Then “we will rejoice and be glad in You.” Rejoicing refers to the sudden joy that comes with the arrival of Divine illumination, while gladness denotes the enduring joy that remains afterward as the light continues and is not withdrawn. “We will remember Your love more than wine.” The spiritual wine that gladdens the soul through prophetic perception causes the powers of the body to become inactive, dazed like those overcome by wine. Yet this experience is remembered with abiding joy, unlike physical wine, whose effects fade and whose joy eventually turns to sorrow. “The upright love You.” All love directed toward the king—that is, toward the inclination and the pleasures of the world—is not upright. Such things are never loved for their own sake but only as means to something else. A person loves wealth in order to purchase gold vessels and precious stones; he loves those possessions in order to gain honor; he loves honor so that his words may be heard. Likewise, he loves wealth in order to buy food and drink; he loves food and drink to strengthen the body; he strengthens the body in order to prolong life. But what, in the end, is the purpose of life itself? The love of God is different. It is an upright love, for He is loved for His own sake, because He is good. The soul cleaves to Him with an essential and natural attachment, as a part cleaves to the whole.

Allegory: “I am dark”—This beloved, so that the watchers would not realize that she was speaking with her beloved, turns her attention to the daughters of Jerusalem who guard her and says to them: Know that although I appear dark—for I have dwelt continually beneath the sun with the flocks—this darkness is not like that of a Cushite woman, which is inherent in her nature and cannot be removed. In my essence I am beautiful, and my darkness is only an accidental condition. Whatever is accidental can easily disappear when its cause is removed. Thus, if I no longer remain beneath the sun, I shall be beautiful as before. For the tents of Kedar are in their essence like the curtains of Solomon: they can be washed and restored to their whiteness, since they are naturally white and their darkness is merely an accidental effect caused by the sun. Figurative Meaning: “I am dark”—The soul that longs for this wondrous union, namely prophetic apprehension, sees that her heavenly Beloved cannot at present kiss her with direct speech face to face, nor draw her out from the king’s chambers, which are the body. For the daughters of Jerusalem—the powers of the body—surround her, and she is entangled among them. Therefore she turns her attention to these neighboring powers of the body, the daughters of Jerusalem, and says to them: Know that although I appear dark in my outward condition (for darkness absorbs the rays of light into itself, as is known in natural philosophy; and this symbolizes the fact that the rays of spiritual light are absorbed within me, hidden inside and not openly revealed—that is, they exist within me potentially rather than actually), nevertheless I am beautiful in my essence. For my true nature is a precious light, a pure and radiant illumination. My darkness is merely an accidental condition that has come upon me because I am imprisoned within matter and exposed before the sun, as will be explained. When I wash away the stains of materiality and am no longer subjected to that sun, then the “tents of Kedar” will once again become like the “curtains of Solomon.” But...

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: “Do not look at me” and think that I am inherently dark, for my outward darkness came only because “the sun has gazed upon me.” The sun looked upon me and fixed its gaze on me (from the expression “nor has the eye of the kite gazed upon it”). If some of that darkness has penetrated beneath the skin, it is because “my mother's sons were angry with me.” They scorched my very bones with the sword and made me dwell in parched places (alluding to the expression “and dwell in the scorched regions of the wilderness”). “They made me keeper of the vineyards,” so that I was compelled to remain continually beneath the sun. As a result, “my own vineyard I did not keep”—that is, I did not attend to my own beauty, which is my vineyard. Consequently, the sun's scorching effect penetrated even into my inner being. Know also that there is a distinction between the verb נטר (“to keep” or “guard”) and the verbs שמר or נצר. The verb נטר is ordinarily used only for intellectual or emotional matters, such as “keeping anger” or “retaining wrath.” According to the plain allegory, the verse should have said שומרה or נוצרה (“keeper” or “guardian”) of the vineyards. Yet it deliberately uses נוטרה, because, as will become clear from the figurative meaning, these vineyards represent intellectual and spiritual matters.

Figurative Meaning: “Do not look at me” and think that “I am dark” by my very nature. The darkness that appears upon me comes from two causes. First, “the sun has gazed upon me.” That is, I exist under the dominion of time, whose existence depends upon the movement of the sun, as is well known. Before the soul descended into the body from its heavenly source, it was Divine and spiritual. Its perceptions were not subject to the laws of time and place or to the limitations of sensory knowledge. Rather, it grasped all things through a simple and immediate perception, without bounds and without stages. But after it was placed within the body, beneath the sun, time, and motion, its perceptions became limited, advancing by degrees and conditioned by time and place, according to the nature of intellect when joined to matter. Therefore it is dark in its outward appearance, for the intellect and spiritual light are hidden within it in potentiality rather than manifested in actuality. Second, “my mother’s sons were angry with me.” The soul has brothers who are sons of its father—the separate intellects and the intellectual powers associated with it, who are the children of its heavenly Father. But it also has brothers who are sons of its mother (as the Zohar teaches, just as the body has a father and mother on earth, so too the soul has a father and mother). The soul’s mother is the body, through which it descended into this world and became an intellect joined to matter and mixed with it. Its brothers from this side are the imaginative faculty, the appetitive faculty, and the other powers of the body. These are “my mother’s sons,” and they “were angry with me,” until not only my outward appearance but even my inner being became darkened and scorched. For “they made me keeper of the vineyards.” The allegory compares the actions a person performs in order to attain some objective to the planting of a vineyard. When the clusters ripen into grapes, one has attained the beginning of the goal; when the grapes are pressed and wine is produced, one has reached the desired end. This applies both to worldly pursuits and to the pursuit of Torah and wisdom. But these powers made me keep other vineyards—that is, they compelled me to pursue goals unrelated to my true purpose and happiness, such as kingship, wealth, position, desire, ambition, and similar pursuits. Therefore “my own vineyard I did not keep.” I did not guard the Torah, wisdom, and holiness that are my own vineyard and my true purpose. As a result, my appearance became darkened, and the light of my spirituality grew dim even within me. Yet all this can easily be removed if I cease turning toward those other vineyards, strip myself of materiality, and withdraw from the dominion of the sun.

Allegory: “Tell me”—The beloved speaks to her lover, who stands behind the wall. Since she is presently unable to be alone with him because of the daughters of Jerusalem who guard her, she asks him to reveal where she may find him when an opportunity arises for her to escape from the king’s palace. Thus she says, “Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock.” A shepherd at times leads his flock out to graze, and at times causes it to lie down, especially at noon when the heat of the sun is too intense for grazing. Then the flock rests. While grazing, each shepherd tends his flock in a separate place; therefore she asks, “Where do you pasture?” But during the resting period, the shepherds gather together in one place where there is shade, and there they make their flocks lie down and rest. Therefore she also asks, “Where do you make your flock lie down at noon?”—that is, among the flocks of your companions. The words “For why should I be like one veiled?” are a parenthetical remark. She means: Why should I remain here like one covered over, concealed, and distressed (the term עוטיה suggesting either one wrapped in a cloak or one preyed upon by a bird of prey), beneath Solomon’s curtains and within his chambers? Am I not accustomed to living freely upon the plains of Sharon and among the mountains of separation?

Figurative Meaning: “Tell me”—The heavenly beloved speaks to her exalted Beloved, who stands behind her walls. Since she is presently unable to unite with Him in prophetic communion because of the material powers that darken and obscure her, she asks Him to reveal His dwelling place—that is, to teach her how she may attain knowledge of His truth through inquiry, contemplation, and intellectual investigation. The Great Shepherd, blessed be He, at times shepherds and at times causes His flock to lie down. That is, God's governance and shepherding of His flock—His hosts, His creatures, and all living beings—operate in two modes. At times He guides them through direct providential care, without the mediation of nature, fate, or other governing forces. Then He personally shepherds the flock of His people through His particular Providence, distributing sustenance and blessing to each according to its need. This is represented by the shepherd actively tending his flock. At other times, when the generation is not worthy, He governs through nature, the constellations, and the celestial order that He established during the six days of creation. This is symbolized by causing the flock to lie down. During rest, the sheep receive no new nourishment from the shepherd but are sustained by what they have already received. Likewise, when nature and the heavenly influences hold sway, God does not bestow a new outpouring of abundance but allows creation to continue through the life and provision He implanted in the world at its beginning. This resting takes place “at noon,” that is, during the reign of the heavenly bodies and the full strength of the sun, which stands at the head of the celestial order, the stars, and the constellations. During active shepherding and providential care, He alone sees and supervises, and no stranger is with Him. But during the resting period He causes the flock to lie down among the flocks of His companions, for then there appear other shepherds and their flocks—the stars and the heavenly princes—each tending its assigned charge according to the commission entrusted to it. Thus Solomon's soul seeks to know and find her Beloved through both of these modes of Divine governance. (The phrase “Why should I be like one veiled?” is parenthetical, meaning: Why should I remain covered and wrapped in the cloud and darkness that conceal me among the shadows of the body, which is Solomon's house? Am I not accustomed to being understanding, knowing, and rich in spiritual activity?)

First, you must know where I may be found. Second, you need counsel and a plan so that the guards and Solomon’s patrols will not recognize you along the way. Concerning the first, that you may find my dwelling place: “Go forth in the footsteps of the flock.” By recognizing the paths and tracks of the sheep, you will come to the place where the shepherd is. Concerning the second, that you not be recognized: “Pasture your young goats beside the shepherds’ tents.” Then people will assume that you are merely a shepherdess tending your flock. The word “beside” is used because, according to the deeper meaning, it signifies being above and beyond.

Figurative Meaning: “If you do not know”—[The reply of the heavenly Shepherd, blessed be He.] In order for you to escape from the king’s court and come to Me—that is, to abandon the inclination, bodily desires, and material concerns, and devote yourself to contemplation and intellectual pursuits until you attain knowledge of My truth—you require two things. First, you must know where and how to find Me; that is, you must know the path by which truth is attained and how to enter the orchard of wisdom to know Him who spoke and the world came into being. Second, you need counsel so that the king Solomon and his troops—that is, the inclination and its forces—will not hinder you from study, contemplation, and the pursuit of perfection. Concerning the first, that you may find My place and know My truth, I tell you: “Go forth in the footsteps of the flock.” Knowledge of God in Himself is impossible. You cannot know and comprehend the Shepherd of the world as He is in Himself. Rather, you must know the Shepherd through the flock He guides. Through the flock you will come to know the Shepherd; that is, through the signs of wisdom, power, mercy, and lovingkindness revealed in the footsteps of the flock and in the living powers He governs with compassion, you will recognize the greatness of the Shepherd and His infinite wisdom and power. Concerning the second matter, that the inclination ruling within the body and its forces not prevent you from advancing toward perfection, I advise you: “Pasture your young goats.” Strive to become the shepherd and ruler of the living powers within yourself, which are your young goats. This is accomplished by modeling your governance of the living powers within your small world—the body—after God’s governance of the living powers within His great world. Just as He directs all things toward one comprehensive intellectual purpose, namely the highest good and perfection, so you should direct your powers toward blessedness and goodness. Thus the verse says: “Go forth in the footsteps of the flock and pasture your young goats,” teaching the beloved to learn from the way the Good Shepherd, blessed be He, tends the flock of His world. “Beside the shepherds’ tents” means that beneath the soul there are other shepherds who govern the body, such as the imaginative faculty, the appetitive faculty, the arousing faculty, and similar powers. Yet all of them must be subject to the rule of the Divine soul. These shepherds—the governors of the bodily powers—must tend their flocks under the authority of the Divine beloved, while she remains above them and guides them with the wisdom of her hands. (And we have already explained in the Introduction that this song is founded upon the first vision in which Hashem appeared to Solomon at Gibeon in a dream by night and said, “Ask what I shall give you.” Solomon requested an understanding heart to hear judgment and discern between good and evil, and the matter pleased Hashem because he had asked for this. Certainly, the fact that he asked for such a thing in his dream was itself pleasing to God, for the thoughts and inclinations that arise in dreams do not proceed from conscious choice and deliberation. Rather, since he asked for this in his dream, it necessarily follows that for many days while awake he had already devoted himself to such thoughts, seeking and laboring to understand judgment. The excellence of this diligence and effort became the cause of the prophetic vision in which God appeared to him and granted his request. Therefore, before describing in the following verses the vision and prophecy through which Solomon’s soul, the beloved, was united with her Beloved, Malbim first explains how Solomon’s soul strove to know God and understand His ways. As we explained in Psalm 72, “Give the king Your judgments,” judgment belongs to God. Since lawmakers have agreed that there must be a universal and primary standard by which all particular laws and judgments are measured, and since the wisest men have been unable to discover this supreme standard on their own, they concluded that “judgment belongs to God.” For He is the supreme Lawgiver and universal Intelligence; therefore the source and root of justice reside with the Root of all roots, Hashem of all. This is why Solomon sought judgment from God, and why the Psalmist prayed, “Give the king Your judgments.” For only from the God of justice can we learn the true balance and scales of judgment. This knowledge is acquired by understanding His ways and paths through the footsteps of the flock—that is, through His governance of creation, as a shepherd carefully inspects and guides his flock with justice and righteousness. Therefore, before describing how Hashem appeared to Solomon and spoke with him in vision—from “To my mare among Pharaoh’s chariots” onward—Malbim first presents Solomon’s diligent effort to understand God’s ways and judgments through contemplation of His governance of the world.)

The song now relates the words exchanged between them. The shepherd sees her adorned with ornaments of gold and pearls and says to her: “My beloved, I compare you to my mare among Pharaoh’s chariots.” That is, you seem to me as though Solomon had taken my mare—the one that is unique and precious to me—and harnessed her to his chariot among the many horses and chariots he had acquired from Egypt, from Pharaoh’s house (as it is written, “And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt”). Although Solomon possesses many fine horses and chariots—the chariots of Pharaoh and the horses imported from Egypt—he has nevertheless taken my own mare, the one that is uniquely mine, and yoked her to his chariot. In the same way, although Solomon has many wives and concubines, with Pharaoh’s daughter at their head, he has also taken my mare—that is, my beloved, who is uniquely mine.

Figurative Meaning: “To my mare”—Through the signs that God had given Solomon's soul by which she might recognize His ways and attain knowledge of His truth, she merited the prophetic vision, and Hashem spoke to him at Gibeon in a dream by night. Here he relates the words exchanged between the lovers in that vision. God sees that Solomon's soul has received ornaments from the body with which it has become associated, as will be explained in the following verse, and He says to her: “My beloved, I compare you to my mare among Pharaoh's chariots.” He calls the powers that govern Solomon's body “Pharaoh's chariots,” for these governing powers draw the chariot of the body and have their origin in Egypt, the place of sensual corruption. The imaginative faculty and the appetitive faculty sought to direct Solomon's chariot—that is, his body—in such a way that he would love many foreign women, namely pride, desire, jealousy, honor, and wealth, and that he would love corruption itself, symbolized by Pharaoh's daughter. The Divine soul, which was also given to him to govern the chariot of his body, He calls “my mare.” It is the mare of the Rider of the heavens, appointed to draw the small chariot, which is Solomon's body, toward the same goal toward which the Supreme Rider guides the great chariot, namely the entire universe: goodness, blessedness, and perfection. But King Solomon—that is, the inclination ruling within the chariot—took this Divine mare and harnessed her to Pharaoh's chariots, causing her to draw the chariot wherever the spirit of Pharaoh's horses desired to go. In other words, he wished the Divine soul to be led by the governance of the material powers, by his chariots and horsemen. Yet despite all this, you are still My mare, uniquely Mine, appointed to be guided by My will and to guide according to My purpose.

Figurative Meaning: “Your cheeks are lovely”—Yet by being harnessed to Solomon's chariot—that is, by being joined to his body—you have become adorned with ornaments such as those used to decorate the king's horses: rows of gold upon your cheeks and strings of pearls upon your neck, ornaments that you did not possess when you were with Me. For before the soul became joined to the body, it did not apprehend any of the attributes of material things—quantity, quality, time, place, or any of the conditions and objects of material perception. The intellect separated from matter perceives things as they are in themselves, abstracted from time, place, and accidental qualities, which are merely conditions of an intellect bound to the body. But when the soul descended into the body and became attached to the chariot of matter, a great change occurred within it. It began to receive its perceptions through the screen of matter and through the windows of the senses. Consequently, its knowledge proceeds by stages. First, the intellect abstracts concepts from the material images perceived by the senses and assigns names to things. Thus speech itself—on account of which the soul is called the rational or speaking soul—consists of concepts abstracted from sensible objects, as is known in logic. While the soul remained in its heavenly source before being imprisoned in the body, it knew nothing of conventional human speech, for separate intellects comprehend everything intellectually and do not employ spoken words by which souls attached to matter express their concepts. Therefore he says: “Your cheeks are lovely with rows of jewels.” The cheeks symbolize speech. That is, your speaking cheeks are adorned with rows of ornaments. The word תורים refers to visible signs and forms (related to the word תואר, “form” or “appearance”). Now you possess speech derived from sensible signs, each designated by its own name, through which the cheeks move to express your thoughts. Furthermore, when the soul dwelt on high, it attained its intelligible objects through an immediate and simple perception, without stages, without time, and without investigation or reasoning. But after becoming joined to the body, its perceptions advance gradually. First it forms judgments from concepts by combining them through affirmation or negation—for example, “the apple is red” or “the apple is not black”—or through necessity, possibility, and the other forms of logical combination known in the science of logic. Afterwards it combines judgments with one another and constructs syllogisms; then from syllogisms it constructs further syllogisms. These become fixed and necessary laws for the soul attached to matter in its process of thought and reasoning, though not for the soul separated from matter, as is known in metaphysics. Therefore he says: “Your neck with strings of jewels.” The neck symbolizes the source of the voice, which is more inward than speech itself, and thus represents the methods by which the soul attains knowledge through rational inquiry. These are beautiful “with strings of jewels,” for just as many pearls are strung together upon a thread, so one judgment is joined to another, and one syllogism to another.

Allegory: “We will make for you rows of gold”—When you were with me, you possessed only “studs of silver.” You had no ornaments of gold, only of silver; not rows and chains of gold, but merely small points and studs fashioned from a little silver. Now, however, “we will make for you rows of gold.”

Figurative Meaning: “Rows of gold”—When you dwelt in your abode with the God of ancient days, before you were joined to Solomon's chariots, you possessed only “studs of silver.” That is, your knowledge then contained neither quantity nor quality. For the geometrical point occupies no space and is indivisible, as is well known, and thus symbolizes the absence of quantity. This stands in contrast to the rows and strings of jewels. The rows, which symbolize concepts derived from sensory perception, are acquired through spatial quantity, by which one image is distinguished from another. Likewise, the strings, which symbolize logical judgments and syllogisms, are connected with temporal quantity, as is known in the science of intellectual analysis. This is the opposite of the point, which possesses no quantity. Furthermore, through your union with the body you have come to apprehend quality as well. This is symbolized by gold as opposed to silver. The whiteness of silver signifies the absence of color, for white is regarded as the simplest of colors. The redness of gold, however, signifies color itself, which represents quality. In other words, you now perceive the attributes of material things, since most material accidents are included under the categories of quantity and quality. Thus, formerly you possessed only “studs of silver,” but now “we will make for you rows of gold” within your very essence—for the essence of the soul consists in its acts of understanding—so that you may apprehend quantity, quality, and the other attributes of material things, because your concepts have become bound up with material objects and their properties.

Allegory: [The beloved's reply.] “While”—Know that I have now separated myself from the company of King Solomon. For while he sat reclining at his table, enjoying his pleasures and delights, I felt no desire for his delicacies. Rather, “my spikenard gave forth its fragrance.” My spikenard—which symbolizes my beloved, who is my perfume and my sweet fragrance—gave forth its scent. I sensed his pleasant aroma and was drawn after him. It may also mean that the fragrance of his spikenard—that is, the fragrance of my beloved himself—reached from the place where he was all the way to the place where the king sat at his banquet.

Figurative Meaning: [The soul's reply.] “While”—Know that I have abandoned materiality and separated myself from its companionship. For while the king—that is, the appetitive faculty and inclination ruling within the body—sat at his banquet, presiding and delighting in bodily pleasures, “my spikenard gave forth its fragrance.” I perceived the fragrance of my own spikenard, namely the spiritual fragrance and the incense of holy spices that proceed from my spikenard, which is my holy Beloved. That is, I perceived the ways of Hashem and His governance, whose fragrance reached my senses through its sweet aroma. It may also mean that the fragrance of the spirituality of the heavenly Beloved flowed to me from His holy dwelling place, reaching even the place of my body where the evil inclination sat at its banquet.

First, through the remembrance of the perfume that remained with her, for her beloved was like “a bundle of myrrh” resting between her breasts. Figurative Meaning: “A bundle”—She explains that she perceived the sweet fragrance and spirituality of God from two perspectives. First, from the divinity within the soul itself. Since the soul is Divine and a portion emanating from His essence, it resembles a tablet upon which all Divine realities are engraved. For the part resembles the whole. When a person opens the inner eyes of his intellect and gazes upon the tablets of his soul, he finds there the dwelling place of God and His sanctuary, and beholds there all these Divine wonders inscribed as with the writing of God upon the tablets. The Divine fragrance is bound up and hidden within the bundle of his soul. Therefore “my Beloved is to me like a bundle of myrrh that lies between my breasts,” that is, within the chambers of my heart. He uses the image of a bundle of myrrh—which is the fragrant musk contained in the blood-pouch of the musk deer—as a metaphor, as though this Divine fragrance were bound within the blood of the heart, the choicest blood upon which the life of the living being depends.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “A cluster”—Secondly, she perceives His fragrance and spirituality from the divinity that exists outside the Divine soul, diffused throughout all existence. From there the wise perceive Him, come to know Him, and attain understanding of Him. “From the vineyards of En-Gedi”—which was a wilderness, as related in the Book of Samuel—that is, from the wilderness where He dwells. This is a metaphor for His abode in the heavenly realms beyond this inhabited world of men. There He is like “a cluster of henna blossoms,” whose fragrance is sensed from afar. He uses the image of a cluster because the Divine encompasses all existence and there is nothing apart from Him, just as a cluster contains within itself all the grapes attached to it. In a vineyard there may be countless clusters, yet one particular cluster of henna is distinguished among the multitude by its fragrance. Likewise, among His hosts and creations, the One Unique Being is recognized among myriads of worlds through His spirituality and His governance, by which He gives life to them all. Thus she declares that she has attained a perception of the spirituality and glory of God both through the knowledge implanted within her own soul and through the knowledge of the Divine that exists beyond her soul.

Figurative Meaning: “Behold, you are beautiful”—Hashem says to the soul: “Behold, you are beautiful” in two respects. First, because “you are My beloved,” a portion of Me and joined to Me, attached to the divinity that pervades all existence outside the soul. This corresponds to the image of the cluster of henna blossoms. Second, “you are beautiful” in your own right, for by your very essence you are holy, a daughter of God. Divine beauty crowns you because of the divinity that resides within the soul itself. This corresponds to the image of the bundle of myrrh. “Your eyes are doves.” That is, the two kinds of eyes within you: first, the inward eye by which you behold the powers of the soul and perceive within them the Divine visions engraved upon their tablets; second, the outward eye by which you gaze upon the whole of existence and discern therein God's Providence, wisdom, and power. Both of these eyes are like doves, which never separate from their mate. So too, with both of these eyes you look toward Me, seeking to know Me, inquire after Me, and pursue My love.

Figurative Meaning: “Behold”—The soul replies: “Behold, You are beautiful, my Beloved,” and You too are beautiful in these same two respects. First, with regard to the divinity that exists outside the soul: You are beautiful, for all the beauty found in the order of creation exists in You essentially and primarily, since You are the source of beauty from which beauty spreads throughout all existence. Second, with regard to the divinity within the soul: “Indeed, pleasant.” The souls perceive within it the highest delight, sweetness, and perfection. Having now explained the relationship between these holy lovers from both perspectives—the divinity that exists outside the soul and the divinity concealed within the soul—she declares that the time has come to unite them together: the divinity outside the soul with the divinity within the soul, the Holy Spirit that flows through the great world with the Holy Spirit that flows through the little world, as the part is joined to the whole. For this reason she had prayed, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.” “And indeed our couch”—the place where this sacred union and communion shall occur—“is verdant,” fresh and full of life. For both have already been prepared for this union and this cleaving of spirit to spirit: the soul, through its awakening to seek God, inquire after Him, and long for Him; and God, through His readiness to pour out His Spirit and His love upon the soul in His kindness.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “The beams”—He depicts this prophetic union, in which the soul cleaves to the Infinite One, blessed be He, according to the pattern that God commanded for the Temple, which served as a medium between the Infinite and the finite, between the unbounded and the bounded. For when the Infinite God, who is without limit or end, desired to cause His glory to dwell upon the souls of Israel—which are themselves bounded and confined in the highest degree, the dwelling place of the soul being but a tiny upper chamber no larger than the palm of a hand—it was as though a house of cedars were built for Him, as if the exalted God would leave His own mode of existence, which is without limit and not confined to any place, in order to dwell in a bounded location upon the wings of the cherubim beneath beams of cedar. Likewise, the soul leaves its own condition, being confined within a narrow place, a span in length and a span in breadth, enclosed in a body composed of flesh, sinews, and bones in the lowest realm, and ascends to dwell and unite with its Beloved in a freer and more spacious abode, and in a body stronger than the human body—the body of the plant—which is not composed of such a complex mixture as the body of an animal, but drinks the rain of heaven and is nourished by simpler elements. Thus the two distant extremes are continually joined through an intermediate boundary. To illustrate this allegory, Solomon—just as the Torah did with the Tabernacle—chose to portray the intermediate realm in which these distant lovers draw near to one another by dwelling beneath beams of cedar, the tallest of trees. (This also symbolizes the elevation of the earthly element upward, for plant life represents the ascent of the element of earth from lowliness to height, a symbolism most clearly displayed in the lofty and exalted cedars of Lebanon.) Therefore he says, “The beams of our house are cedars.” Through this, “our rafters”—that is, the channels through which water flows—are made of cypresses, whose branches spread widely. In other words, the stream of Divine abundance passes through the cypresses that form the roof of this sanctuary. They become the conduits, channels, and pipes of blessing through which spiritual influence is poured forth and emptied upon the earth and upon the dark physical bodies that thirst for the rain of heaven, the dew of lights, and showers of generosity, giving them life through the upper waters—the waters of kindness and holiness.
