Allegory: “I am”—The beloved says: I am like a crocus that grows in the Sharon and like a lily that grows in the valleys. (The crocus is a plant whose root lies beneath the earth like an onion bulb. It does not possess a strong fragrance, but bears a very beautiful flower upon its top. Its nature is to open before the sun and turn toward it, and to close when the sun sets. It flourishes and prospers only in the Sharon beneath the sun. The lily, however, possesses a sweet fragrance, and its nature is to release the scent it absorbed at sunset. Therefore it flourishes in growth and fragrance in the valleys and beneath the shadows.) Thus she means: I love tranquility and delight in dwelling in the Sharon, opening the blossoms of my beauty before the shining sun—that is, presenting myself before my beloved, who shines like the sun in the Sharon wilderness and casts his light upon me. Then my beauty and the blossoms of my loveliness are revealed. But after I return to the valley beneath the shadows—which for her symbolizes Solomon’s chambers, where she is confined in the valleys far from the sun of her beloved that shines upon her flowers—then I release the sweet fragrance that I received from that sun. I am like a lily that gives forth its fragrance in the valley beneath the shadows. That is, then the daughters of Jerusalem, my neighbors, perceive the sweet fragrance of my virtues and noble qualities.
Figurative Meaning: “I am”—The soul says, “I am like a crocus of the Sharon and like a lily of the valleys.” That is, insofar as I cast off my soiled garments and emerge from the valley and the holes—that is, from my dwelling within the body—into the Sharon to warm myself before the light of the great Sun, which is the light of God shining upon me, I am like the crocus of the Sharon that opens its blossoms, buds, and stalks to absorb the sunlight and turns itself toward it. Then its beauty and splendor become visible. So too, when the Divine Sun shines upon me, the soul unfolds itself, brings forth its spiritual blossoms, and reveals its arms—that is, the divinity concealed within it. Then its majesty and glorious beauty become manifest. However, when the glory of God departs from it and the great Sun sets, the flowers close, the mouth is shut, and its Divine arms are gathered back within. They are no longer visible outwardly, and the soul returns to the valley, which is the body. Then it gives forth the sweet fragrance and spirituality that it received from the great Light. Its neighbors—the psychic powers attached to matter—become perfumed by its spices and place them in their own vessels, learning from it the ways of God, His governance, His wisdom, and His kindnesses. At that time it resembles “a lily of the valleys,” which releases its fragrance beneath the shadows. (As it says in the Zohar, Emor 107b: “At first she is called a crocus when she desires to unite with the King; after she has united with the King through those kisses she is called a lily, as it is written, ‘His lips are lilies.’ ‘A lily of the valleys’—for she changes her color, at times for good and at times for otherwise.”)
Allegory: “Like a lily”—[The beloved's reply.] Indeed, you are like “a lily among thorns” among the daughters of Jerusalem. The plant upon which the lily grows is full of thorns, and if the lily becomes entangled among them they will pierce and damage it. Therefore it must raise its head above them and avoid becoming mixed with them. So too must you guard yourself lest the daughters of Jerusalem entice you into the love of Solomon.
Figurative Meaning: “Like a lily”—[The reply of the heavenly Beloved, blessed be He.] Indeed, you are like a lily among the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, among the powers of the body—as a lily among thorns. The plant upon which the lily grows is surrounded by thorns, and therefore it must raise its head above them and avoid becoming entangled with them. Otherwise the thorns will pierce and damage it. So too the material powers over which the soul must rise are like thorns that wound the holy lily whenever it mingles in their company. They corrupt the beauty and splendor of its holiness. Therefore the soul must elevate itself above them and not become mixed with their fellowship. (As it says in the Ra'aya Meheimna, Parashat Ki Tetze, fol. 278: “If not, all the limbs of the body are found full of sins, and no limb is found upon which Torah and commandments may rest; then she is a lily among thorns.”)
Allegory: “Like an apple tree”—[The beloved replies.] You too are like an apple tree among the trees of the forest. The taller trees conceal it by their height and abundance of branches, yet it is distinguished among them in two ways. First, by its fragrance. Therefore, “in its shade I delighted and sat,” enjoying its sweet aroma. Second, by its fruit, which is sweet to my taste. That is, at times she sits in his shade when she escapes from Solomon's chambers and is alone with him. At other times, even when she remains confined beneath the shade of the forest trees, she can still partake of his fruit—the fruits of love—which are sweet to her palate.

Figurative Meaning: “Like an apple tree”—[The soul replies.] God also, insofar as He is the Soul of the worlds—that is, insofar as He governs, moves, and gives life to them, just as the soul governs, moves, and gives life to the body—from this perspective resembles the soul that governs bodies, moves them, and bestows life and sustenance upon them. Yet He exists “among the sons,” meaning that alongside Him there appear other governing forces, namely nature, the celestial order, and their powers, to which He has allotted authority. As a result, the flow of Providence descending from God is hidden, concealed, and veiled. Thus He is like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, for the great height and abundant branches of the forest trees overshadow and conceal the apple tree, whose trunk is small in comparison. Likewise, the great spheres and heavenly bodies moving in their courses and exercising their influence upon the world are visible to the eye, whereas Divine Providence remains hidden from sight. There are two aspects to this. At times God governs through direct Providence and nullifies all the powers of nature. At other times the rule of nature, the laws of heaven, and their ordinances become dominant, and the Supreme Beloved is concealed. This depends upon the way souls govern their own little worlds—that is, their bodies. If souls rule over their bodies and govern them through providential and voluntary guidance according to the dictates of reason and free choice, then the great world and its natural forces likewise submit before the Supreme Intellect, blessed be He, and are governed beneath Him through miraculous Providence. Then the souls become united with the Soul of the world, and they behold Divine visions and attain prophecy. For prophecy is revealed to prophets because God is the Soul of the world and the worlds are His chariot. This is the mystery of the Divine Chariot seen by Isaiah and Ezekiel, and of the visions perceived by the seers through the Spirit of God, wherein they beheld the structure of the worlds and the Infinite One riding upon them and governing them with His wondrous Providence according to the level at which He fills all worlds, as is known. At such times, “in his shade I delighted and sat,” for then the shadow of the forest trees is removed, their protection departs from them, and the soul lodges beneath the shadow of the Almighty in Divine vision and enjoys His fragrance, for He pours out His Spirit upon it. But when natural forces gain mastery in the little worlds—that is, when souls follow nature and fail to rule over their impulses and subdue the powers of matter beneath their feet—then the natural forces likewise gain mastery in the great world, and Providence becomes veiled beneath the screen of nature and fate. The trees of the forest overshadow the apple tree with their branches and shade. Yet even then, “his fruit was sweet to my taste.” The fruit of Providence, the holy fruit, remains food and healing for weakened souls. Through it they gain understanding in His Torah and commandments, in His ways and His governance; they learn the fear of God and the love of Him, and they eat from the fruit of the Tree of Life and live. (As the Zohar on Ha'azinu teaches: “Just as the apple tree is distinguished in its colors from all the other trees of the field, so the Holy One, blessed be He, is distinguished and marked above all the hosts above and below; therefore ‘Hashem of Hosts is His name’—a sign among all the hosts above.” See also the Zohar, Lech Lecha 85a and Acharei Mot 74a.)
Allegory: “He brought me”—[The beloved relates.] After the lovers had spoken all these words together, my beloved took me and brought me into the house of wine. There he raised his banner over me, and that banner was love itself. Love was the standard which he displayed above me.
Figurative Meaning: “He brought me”—[The soul relates.] After these exalted exchanges, the Spirit of God began to stir within Solomon's soul, preparing it for Divine union. This is expressed in the allegory by the statement that “He brought me into the house of wine.” The wine mentioned throughout this entire book, which the beloved drinks from the hand of her Beloved, is the prophetic wine, preserved in its grapes, the sacred libation poured out to Hashem, which gladdens souls when the Spirit comes to rest upon them. (As the Zohar on Leviticus teaches: “If he is a disciple of wisdom, it is written, ‘Wine gladdens the heart of man’; this is the wine that is preserved and brings joy to all. And there is another wine, which is judgment...”) “And His banner over me”—He had already raised His banner over me, and that banner was love. It was His love that drew me and bound me to Him, for love precedes the kiss, and being brought into the house of wine precedes the actual drinking of the wine itself.
Allegory: “Sustain me with raisin-cakes” and with cups of wine. “Refresh me”—spread fragrant apples beneath me, giving forth their pleasant scent, for I am sick with love.
Figurative Meaning: “Sustain me”—She now asks that she be sustained with cakes of wine and that fragrant apples be spread beneath her as a couch. Throughout this book, wine symbolizes prophetic influence, while fragrance consistently symbolizes knowledge attained through inquiry and contemplation, by which one perceives the spirituality of God from afar. Thus she asks to be sustained by the cakes of prophetic wine, for after separating from the body in love and longing for her Beloved, she has nothing upon which to lean except the cakes of that wine preserved in its grapes, the sacred libation poured out to Hashem. As for knowledge attained through study and investigation—symbolized by the apples—it should be spread beneath her as a resting place. Her primary support is to be prophecy, and afterward she will attain knowledge of God's truth through contemplation and inquiry as well, through the wisdom, understanding, and breadth of heart that God granted to Solomon, broad as the sand upon the seashore. “For I am sick with love,” for my soul cleaves to God with a wondrous longing, like one afflicted with lovesickness whose entire being is bound up in love.
Allegory: “His left hand”—And the beloved unites with her in love, “His left hand is under my head, and His right hand embraces me.”
Figurative Meaning: “His left hand”—This depicts the cleaving of Solomon's soul to the Divine Spirit, as expressed in the words, “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth.” In Scripture, God's governance through the natural order is symbolized by the left hand, while His wondrous and miraculous acts are symbolized by the right hand. Likewise, that which the soul attains through prophecy—when He leads it by His glorious right arm in a supernatural manner—is described as His right hand embracing the soul with the arm of His strength. This corresponds to “Sustain me with cakes of wine,” for prophetic inspiration is the principal support. What the soul attains afterward through understanding, contemplation, and intellectual inquiry is described as His placing His left hand beneath her head to support her understanding. Thus the left hand serves as a couch beneath her head, corresponding to “Refresh me with apples,” for intellectual attainment rests beneath and is subordinate to the holy Providence attained through Divine inspiration. The right hand, which symbolizes miraculous and providential perception, embraces her, for this is the primary attainment. (Nevertheless, because intellectual attainment precedes prophetic attainment in time, and prophecy rests only upon those who have prepared themselves through wisdom and the fear of God, he mentions the left hand first in the order of his words.)
Allegory: “I adjure you”—[Meanwhile, the daughters of Jerusalem who were guarding her pursue her, and she sees them approaching from afar.] She says to them: I adjure you not to stir up hostility against this love (from the expression “and he became your enemy”). Nor should you awaken or arouse it. That is, neither to drive it away nor to draw it near, but to leave it undisturbed until it desires—according to the will of the lovers themselves. Let no outsider interfere between them. And since there is no one in the wilderness except the gazelles and the hinds of the field, she places them under oath, making them the witnesses, heralds, and guardians of this adjuration.
The beloved departed and went away, and the beloved maiden was returned to Solomon's chambers.
Thus the first song is completed.
Figurative Meaning: “I adjure you”—Meanwhile, the powers of the body began to awaken from their slumber and to disrupt this precious union. Therefore the Divine soul adjures the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, the bodily powers—not to interfere with this spiritual love and cleaving to the Rock of its strength, neither by distancing it nor by drawing it near. For even an awakening of this love through the agency of material powers would be a strange fire and an impure love tainted by external motives. Rather, it must remain undisturbed until love itself desires to awaken through the stirring of the spirit to cleave to the Spirit of God. How much more, then, should they refrain from disrupting it by sowing hostility between the soul and its heavenly Beloved, enticing it instead toward worldly desires and the love of other things. Since the soul is now in the wilderness outside the city—that is, it has stripped itself of the body and become separated from all its powers, cleaving instead to spirituality and the Supreme Intellect—there remains no intermediary between it and the bodily powers except the vital soul alone, whose arteries never rest. It continually sends forth its streams through the channels of the blood that circulates from the heart to all the arteries of the body and then returns again. This circulation moves with great speed, traversing every part of the body twenty-four or thirty times in an hour. Because of its swiftness, it is compared to the gazelles and the hinds of the field, creatures renowned for their rapid motion. By these gazelles she adjures the powers of the body not to disturb the law of love.
The Holy Spirit departed from Solomon's soul, and it was returned—when the powers of the body awoke—to be confined once again within the prison-house of matter, as before.
Thus the first song is completed.
The second song continues until “Upon my bed at night” (3:1). After the beloved had been confined for many days in the king's court, the winter and part of the spring had passed, and the month of Ziv arrived. Then the beloved came from the mountains of Bether and persuaded his beloved to come out after him. She went out into the vineyards, and the daughters of Jerusalem who guarded her were sent away from her. Meanwhile she joined her beloved along the paths of the vineyards until the day began to breathe. Then the daughters returned, and the beloved fled away and departed.
“The voice”—The beloved imagines herself hearing the voice of her beloved from afar. Yet even so she recognizes that “behold, he comes.” He is leaping across the mountains, from one mountain to another, and from there springing down from the mountain to the hill beneath it.
The second song continues until “Upon my bed at night” (3:1). After the heavenly beloved had been confined within the body for many days, and the winter and part of the spring had passed and the month of Ziv had arrived, the Beloved came to the beloved. This is an allegory for the second communication that God spoke to Solomon when he began to build the Temple in the month of Ziv. As explained in the introduction to the book, this was not a complete prophetic revelation but only a temporary Divine communication. Therefore he portrays the heavenly Beloved as coming of His own accord to His holy beloved, for Solomon's soul had not then prepared itself for prophecy. Nor did she go out into the wilderness, far removed from the body, but only into the vineyards, which are near the city. The daughters—that is, the powers of the body—departed only for a short time, being occupied with catching the foxes that spoil the vineyards, whose meaning will be explained later. This continued until the day began to breathe; then the daughters of materiality returned, and the heavenly Beloved withdrew from Solomon's soul.
“The voice”—The heavenly beloved hears the voice of her supreme Beloved, and yet by that voice alone she recognizes that “behold, He comes.” For the prophets perceive through the voice and know that it is Hashem who speaks. “Leaping”—He depicts five successive stages, one above another. The Divine influx and prophetic revelation do not descend all at once in a single degree, but pass through various intermediary levels until they reach the prophet. Therefore he portrays the Beloved as “leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills,” moving from one level to the next, from one spiritual rank to another, until His voice reaches the soul prepared to receive it.
(1) “Leaping from mountain to mountain”—This is an allegory for the fact that the Presence of His strength exists beyond the worlds, for the lofty mountains rise above the earth, and one who stands upon them is elevated above this world.
(2) “Skipping from the mountains to the hills”—Afterward He skips down from the mountains to the hills beneath them. This is an allegory for His descending into the world in order to fill all worlds with His presence.
And in this way my beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag, leaping over the mountains of Bether and across the hills. From there he draws nearer still, until he stands behind our wall. Then he comes closer yet, gazing through the windows. Closer still, he peers in and extends his head through the lattice, into the very house where his beloved dwells. (“Peering” is related to tzitz, something that protrudes or projects outward.)

“Like”—That is, in this respect my Beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag. Both have the nature that, even when they wander far away, they return to their place. The gazelle especially is said by the sages to look behind itself while running. This symbolizes that, in the first aspect—when He is beyond the worlds—His gaze is turned backward, and His Providence extends to the higher intelligences. In the second aspect, He is like a stag that looks forward toward the world; yet even then His intention is to return to His place. Still, His attention is not yet fixed upon the world, for He exercises only a general Providence.
(3) He adds another degree: “Behold, He stands behind our wall.” This signifies His particular Providence over the righteous individual. Within this there are three levels.
The first level is that He watches only over the body, providing all its necessities, sustenance, and protection from harm. This is represented by His standing behind the wall, caring only for the wall lest it collapse or be destroyed, not for the one dwelling inside the house. Likewise, He watches over the body, which is the house and its walls, preserving it from ruin.
(4) He adds a second level of particular Providence: He watches over the soul dwelling within the house and its walls—that is, within the body. This is represented by “looking through the windows.” One who looks through a window observes the inhabitants of the house. So God watches over the soul in order to enlighten it with the knowledge of His truth, yet this remains a distant form of supervision without intimate union or attachment. It is like one who sees through a window, for the window still separates the observer from the one observed. In this stage He sends help from His sanctuary, enabling the soul to sanctify and purify itself and to recognize His wisdom and His paths, according to the principle that “one who comes to purify himself is assisted.”
(5) He adds a third and highest level of particular Providence: the overseer becomes united with the one overseen. God pours out His Spirit upon those who cleave to Him and draws near the one whom He has sanctified. This is represented by “peering through the lattice,” extending His head into the chamber itself and joining with the one who dwells there. For then the head of the one peering is actually inside the room. Likewise, His glory comes to dwell within the sanctuary of His chosen one, embracing the soul with the kisses of His mouth and preparing it to receive the Holy Spirit and the influx of prophecy, speaking with it face to face, until it is drawn after Him out of its prison-house and becomes a chariot for the indwelling of His mighty Presence.
“He answered”—At first he answered with his voice, and afterward he said to me, “Arise and come forth from Solomon’s chambers.”
“He answered”—At first He answered from afar, and afterward “He said to me” from near at hand, with a direct and personal utterance. For Divine speech rises in accordance with the recipient's preparation. First He answered from afar, saying, “Arise for yourself,” that is, prepare yourself for Divine communication. Afterwards He said to me, “Go forth for yourself,” and leave Solomon's chambers, which symbolize the body. “My beloved, my beautiful one”—until now He had called her “My beloved,” but now He adds “My beautiful one.” The bond of companionship is a matter of choice, but love based upon beauty arises from the very nature of the beloved and the excellence of her beauty. Since the Divine spirit had already rested upon her once before, He now saw that she was beautiful and worthy to dwell in His courts and to be satisfied with the goodness of His house.
“For”—The winter has already passed. And even the rain that came after the winter has completely passed away and is gone.
“For behold”—The sages have already compared the soul to a cultivated field whose plants spring forth. Just as a field possesses the potential and preparedness to bring forth the seed sown within it, so too the soul, when cultivated through contemplation and righteous action, brings forth the Divine seeds hidden within it and produces holy fruit worthy of praise. We have discussed a related idea in our commentary on Isaiah 28. The Guide for the Perplexed (I:32) explains that intellectual perceptions, because they are connected to matter, undergo something analogous to sensory perceptions. Since the soul is joined to matter, it necessarily experiences the conditions of matter. We see that material powers are subject to weariness and exhaustion; therefore God implanted in living creatures the need for sleep and rest so that they might recover from their exertions, regain their strength, and renew their powers. This same principle exists among plants, which also possess fixed periods of dormancy through which they renew their vitality, as is known in botany. Likewise, in the natural order of the earth, God in His wisdom established the boundaries of summer and winter, heat and cold. This arrangement is essential for the earth and its produce. After the harvest and the vintage, after the earth has brought forth its vegetation and the garden has yielded its growth, its powers become weary and exhausted. If summer were to continue without interruption, and the earth were forced to produce fruit continually, its fruits would become shriveled, thin, and weak because of the exhaustion of its productive power, just as a field scorched by the heat of summer loses its strength. Therefore the Creator ordained that after the harvest the days of autumn and snow should arrive, during which all the powers of nature fall asleep and withdraw within themselves. Beneath blankets of snow and ice they rest like those overcome by weariness, until spring arrives. Then they awaken from their sleep, their strength renewed, and the earth once again yields abundant produce and fruit. So it is with the powers of the soul because of their connection to matter. When the soul has brought forth its fruit—when it blossoms like a lily and unfolds its Divine flowers to behold visions of God, and when its clusters ripen into grapes through prophecy and the Holy Spirit—it too becomes weary and falls into a period of sleep. It rests within the embrace of the body. These are its days of autumn, when its spiritual powers are hidden beneath the snow, until its strength is renewed and the Divine sun shines upon it once more. We also observe in nature that after autumn come the rainy days. Once the frozen vapors have melted in the warmth of the air, vapors begin to rise and the rain formed from them begins to fall. At that time the atmosphere is not yet clear but remains clouded, obscuring the sunlight. The same occurs in the soul. Even after its powers have rested and begin to awaken from their sleep, and the frost has melted away, the imaginative faculty begins once again to operate. The soul's perceptions are still mingled with vapors and imaginings that obscure the pure heavenly light, until the clouds are dispersed and the thoughts become purified. Then the rain also passes away and is gone. Referring to this allegory, the heavenly Beloved says to His beloved: “For the winter has passed, and the rain has passed away and gone.” (As Maimonides writes in the introduction to the Guide, there are those for whom the lightning flashes again and again with only brief intervals, until it seems almost a constant light—this was the level of the greatest of the prophets, Moses our teacher. Others experience long intervals between flashes, and this is the level of most prophets. Solomon experienced these flashes of Divine illumination four times during his life, when the Divine sun shone upon him in the four occasions on which God spoke to him. Between each revelation came periods of winter and snow.)
“The blossoms”—He adds that the plants have already emerged from the earth. He further adds that “the time of singing has come,” when the songbirds raise their melodies in the days of spring. He adds yet another sign: that even the turtledove—which is one of the migratory birds, as it is said, “the turtledove, the swallow, and the crane observe the time of their coming”—has returned. Its custom is to depart during the winter for warmer lands and not return until the sun rises with healing in its wings. Now even it has returned, and its voice is heard in our land.
“The blossoms”—He adds further that the Divine seeds which had been sown within the soul when the Spirit first rested upon it—seeds that during the winter and dormancy of the soul remained hidden within it only in potential—have now begun to reveal themselves and emerge into actuality, until “they appear in the land.” He adds yet another sign: “the time of singing has come.” The Divine soul possesses two levels. The first is the neshamah, which remains within the body and is not separated from it throughout a person's life. The second is a higher level called chayah and yechidah, which descends from above according to a person's deeds and holiness, and which departs from him during the winter and dormancy of the soul (as the sages taught: “If he merits more, they give him an additional soul,” and so forth). The soul in its first level resembles the songbird. During the winter it does not sing, yet it does not leave its homeland; rather, it remains dwelling quietly, like a dove in the clefts of the rock and hidden places. So too, during the dormancy of the soul and intellect, it remains within the body, silent and unsinging. But now that the soul has awakened from its slumber, “the time of singing has come,” for it once again sings the song of Hashem and rises in the sweet melodies of prophecy and understanding, which are the song of the soul. He adds further that even “the voice of the turtledove”—which symbolizes the higher levels of chayah and yechidah, bestowed from above, and which until now had withdrawn because of the winter to distant heavenly realms and lofty habitations—now “is heard in our land,” for it has returned and the Divine Presence dwells once more through the awakening of the Holy Spirit.
“The fig tree”—He adds that even the fig tree has ripened its early figs, and the vines too have begun to flourish, for the month of Ziv has arrived, the season in which splendor comes to the trees. Therefore, “Arise, my beloved, and go forth.” That is, at first he said, “Arise for yourself,” because there was no longer any fear of harm from the winter, since it had already passed. Now he adds, “Arise,” because of the benefit and delight that you will receive from the spring and the summer.
“The fig tree”—That is, the holy seeds hidden within the human soul exist on two levels. Some exist only potentially and not yet actually. These resemble seeds which, during the winter, disappear completely, leaving only their hidden germ buried in the earth, ready to emerge when the sun shines upon them. Likewise, these powers become entirely concealed during the dormancy of the soul. Others exist within the soul in actuality and have become its permanent possession. These resemble fruit-bearing trees, which do not disappear completely during the winter but merely cease producing fruit. Their substance nevertheless remains. So too, these powers do not vanish even during the soul's dormancy; they merely cease bearing fruit and produce, sleeping the sleep of winter, while their holy seed remains established within them. Thus he adds to his allegory that even those powers already present in the soul in actuality, which until now had not produced holy fruits worthy of praise, will now begin to bear fruit. The fig tree symbolizes the powers of intellect and understanding, which refine the honey of pleasant words, while the vine symbolizes the faculty prepared for prophecy and the Holy Spirit, for we have already explained that the wine mentioned throughout this book alludes to prophecy. He says that these powers have brought forth buds and blossoms and are prepared to bear fruit. Therefore, “Arise, go forth, My beloved,” and leave the body in order to cleave to the Most High. At first He said, “Arise, go forth,” because there was no longer any danger, since the winter had passed and nothing remained to hinder the soul. Now He adds that she must go forth because everything is blossoming and bearing fruit, and she is prepared for the great benefit that will come when God pours out His Spirit upon her. The poet drew these images from the season in which this Divine communication occurred—the month of Ziv in the fourth year of Solomon's reign (as related in 1 Kings 6). He took his allegory from the transformations that this month brings to the earth's vegetation and applied them to the changes produced in the soul and its powers by the revelation of God's splendor and glory.
“My dove”—He sees that the beloved cannot now venture far from the city, for she has not gone out with him into the wilderness but only into the vineyards. Therefore he compares her to a dove that hides in the clefts of the rock during the winter season. At that time it does not sing with its voice, for it remains concealed in a hidden place, as though hiding its body from sight and its voice from hearing. He therefore pleads, “Let me see your appearance; let me hear your voice,” and explains, “for your voice is sweet.” That is, even if you cannot go out into the wilderness, at least come forth from your hiding place so that I may see you and hear your voice.
“My dove”—We have already explained in the introduction to this work that this communication was not a complete prophetic revelation through vision and spectacle, but only a prophetic awakening. The soul did not then completely separate itself from the body. Therefore he compares it to a dove hidden in the clefts of the rock, for it remained clothed in its body. The message which God then spoke to Solomon was: “This house which you are building—if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, and keep all My commandments, walking in them...” The difference between this communication and the first one, spoken to him in the dream at Gibeon, is that there Solomon asked for wisdom and was granted wisdom and an understanding heart, whereas in this communication he was warned concerning the observance of the commandments. Accordingly, in the first communication God bestowed upon him an abundance of wisdom and understanding for his speculative intellect, while in this communication He bestowed upon him an abundance of the fear and love of God for his practical intellect. It is well known that the speculative and practical intellects depend upon one another, as the sages said: “If there is no fear, there is no wisdom; if there is no wisdom, there is no fear.” Wisdom precedes fear as a cause precedes its effect, for an ignorant person cannot be pious. One must first know through the speculative intellect whom one fears and what statutes a person must observe in order to live by them. Yet fear precedes wisdom as an end precedes its means, for the purpose of wisdom is the fear of God, as the sages taught: “The end of wisdom is repentance and good deeds.” Since in the first communication God bestowed wisdom and knowledge upon him, He came in this second communication to warn him concerning the fear of God and the observance of His commandments, which are the ultimate goal. The appearance of the soul corresponds to the speculative intellect, while its voice corresponds to the practical intellect. That is, the appearance of the soul reveals its very essence, and the essence of the soul is understanding itself; therefore, through the speculative intellect the soul displays its appearance. The speculative intellect judges things as they are, distinguishing truth from falsehood. The practical intellect, however, judges things as they ought to be, determining what should be done and what should not be done, distinguishing good from evil. This is the voice of the soul, for through it the soul makes its will heard to all the powers of the body, commanding and warning them concerning good and evil, commandments and transgressions. Through the voice a person reveals his will; through his appearance he reveals what he essentially is. Thus God says to Solomon's soul: You are enclosed in the clefts of the rock, hiding your appearance, and in the secret place of the steep path, not allowing your voice to be heard. Therefore, “Let Me see your appearance,” by exercising the speculative intellect, upon which God had already bestowed wisdom in the first communication. And also, “Let Me hear your voice,” by commanding the powers of your body to observe the commandments and statutes of God through the practical intellect, which is what He was warning him about in this communication. For this reason He first says, “Let Me see your appearance,” since the speculative intellect comes first in time. However, when explaining their importance, He begins with, “For your voice is sweet,” because the fear of God takes precedence over wisdom in importance, since it is the ultimate purpose.
Allegory: “Catch”—He now relates how the beloved was able to be alone with her beloved. But how could this be? They had not gone far from the city; they were only among the vineyards, and the daughters of Jerusalem who guarded her were there as well. How, then, did they not interrupt this union? He explains that the beloved sent the daughters of Jerusalem away from her to catch the foxes that were damaging the vineyards. She said to them, “Catch for us the foxes,” for the little foxes that roam through the vineyard are the ones that spoil the vines. “Our vineyards are in blossom,” so catch them lest they ruin them. While the daughters went off to hunt the foxes, she remained alone with her beloved. Therefore she says, “My beloved is mine...” There is also a hidden allusion here, like apples of gold in settings of silver. When Samson's betrothed was given to another man and the Philistines did not object, he caught three hundred foxes and sent them out to destroy the vineyards. These foxes too have come to spoil the vineyard because I have been taken away from my beloved, my husband and betrothed. Therefore, go and catch them.
Figurative Meaning: “Catch”—We have already explained that in this communication the beloved did not depart from the city, that is, Solomon's soul did not separate itself from the body, because this was not a complete prophetic revelation. This verse portrays how Solomon's soul was united with its heavenly Beloved while still remaining within the body, and how the daughters of the body and its powers did not interrupt this union. He explains that Solomon's soul sent the powers of the body to catch the little foxes that spoil the vineyards. The fox symbolizes the powers of imagination, for the fox's cleverness arises from its imaginative faculty more than that of other animals, enabling it to devise cunning schemes through the power of imagination. When prophecy is incomplete and the soul has not fully separated from the body, the visions of the imaginative faculty become mingled with the perceptions of the intellect. As a result, prophets behold forms and images, as it is written, “By the ministry of the prophets have I used similitudes.” This comes from the admixture of the imaginative faculty. Thus, while the powers of the body occupy themselves with imaginative visions and images, the intellect abstracts the pure perception it receives from the Divine influx flowing upon it and attains understanding through the Spirit of God resting upon it. This is represented here by Solomon's soul sending its maidens, the material powers, to catch the foxes—that is, to occupy themselves with the imaginings spread by the imaginative faculty and the visions and images it generates. (Thus the imaginative faculty produced the imagery described here, in which she hears the voice of her heavenly Beloved and sees Him leaping upon the mountains like a gazelle or a young stag, all of which arose in the vision through the involvement of the imagination in the perception.) While the daughters of matter were occupied with these imaginings, which belong to the senses and material perception, the intellect extracted from them its pure prophetic perception, and the soul was united with its Beloved. She further explains that these foxes spoil the vineyards, and the vineyard is in blossom. Throughout this book, prophecy is compared to wine, symbolizing the joy of the soul in spiritual perception. In the first revelation, which was a complete prophecy, she said, “He brought me to the house of wine,” and “Sustain me with raisin-cakes,” because the soul had separated itself from matter and its powers, and the imaginative faculty did not intermingle with it. Thus she drank the wine preserved in its grapes. In this revelation, however, which was not a complete prophecy, she did not drink cups of wine. Instead, it is compared to vineyards from which wine will eventually come forth. This signifies that it was merely a manifestation of the Holy Spirit and a beginning and preparation for prophecy, just as the vineyard is a preparation for wine. Even this beginning was not yet complete and perfect, but is likened to a vineyard in blossom, whose clusters have not yet ripened into grapes. Therefore she explains that the material powers occupy themselves with catching the foxes—that is, the images and visions of the imagination—because the vineyard is only in blossom. In other words, the prophecy is incomplete, and therefore imaginative images abound within it. These foxes spoil the vineyard, meaning that they diminish the prophecy, obscure its light, and mix visions and imaginings into its perceptions. Therefore the powers of the body are occupied with the images of imagination, while meanwhile the soul is united with its heavenly Beloved, beholding the beauty of Hashem and hearing His holy words. He also offers a second interpretation: just as the foxes ruined the vineyards of Timnah because Samson's wife was given to another man, so too the foxes—the powers of imagination—damage the vineyard of prophecy because the beloved, Solomon's soul, was given to King Solomon; that is, because it became entangled in matter and could not fully separate from it and unite with its heavenly Beloved, blessed be He.
Allegory: “My beloved”—While the daughters of Jerusalem had gone off to hunt the foxes, my beloved was mine, and she was united with her beloved, the shepherd who grazes among the lilies and who brought her fragrant lilies as a remembrance of his love.
Figurative Meaning: “My beloved”—While the powers of materiality were occupied with the images produced by the imagination, the soul was united with its Beloved. Since here the awakening came from above to below, for the soul had not prepared itself for prophecy, it says first “My beloved is mine” and only afterward “and I am his.” “Who grazes among the lilies”—When He shepherds bodies, sustaining and nourishing them, He is called a shepherd through bread and water, leading them beside pleasant pastures. But when He shepherds souls, granting them prophecy and knowledge of His truth, He is called a shepherd through lilies that give forth fragrance, for this is a spiritual shepherding by which intellects and souls are sustained and given life.
Allegory: “Until”—This union continued until the heat of the day grew strong and the shadows fled away. Then the daughters of Jerusalem would return from the vineyards where they had been hunting, for they could no longer endure the heat of the sun. Therefore, turn away from here lest the daughters find you when they return. And be like a gazelle that always returns to its place; so too return to me again and again, from time to time.
And thus the second song is completed: the Beloved returned to the mountains of Bether.
Figurative Meaning: “Until”—This prophetic union would not continue for a long time, but only until the heat of the day became strong. In the allegory, this means until the powers and habits of material nature regained their strength, causing the daughters of materiality to grow weary of occupying themselves with imaginative perception. Then the shadows would flee away, that is, the visions of the imagination would disappear when matter and its natural forces awakened and returned to their bodily concerns and necessities. At that point the heavenly Beloved would withdraw, and the Divine communication would cease because of the daughters of the body and its powers, which had returned to occupy themselves with their material needs. Then He would be like a gazelle that turns back and returns to its place; so too He would return to Solomon's soul again and again whenever it became prepared for spiritual perception. And thus the second song is completed: the Beloved returned to the mountains of Bether.
The heavenly Beloved returned to His holy dwelling. And thus the second song is completed.
