Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: The third song: After many days, while the beloved remained confined within Solomon's chambers, she remembered her beloved and his love while upon her bed at night. She rose from her couch to seek him in the city, but did not find him until she went out from the city into the wilderness. There she was united with him until the daughters of Jerusalem pursued her. Yet even afterward their union continued, and he spoke with her in every expression of affection. In this song he relates how she left Solomon's bed, and how the daughters of Jerusalem were unable to separate them even after this. This song continues until “I sleep” (5:2).

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: “Upon”—The beloved began to remember her beloved and to seek him upon her bed, night after night, but she did not find him.

Figurative Meaning: The third song: After many days, while the heavenly beloved remained confined within the body, she remembered her Beloved in heaven. She arose from her bed—that is, from her body—and separated herself from material concerns in order to seek and search for Hashem. This occurred in the eleventh year of King Solomon, when the construction of the House of Hashem was completed and he abounded in prayers, supplications, and numerous sacrifices (as related in 1 Kings 8 and 2 Chronicles). Yet she did not find her Beloved until she went out from the city into the wilderness—that is, until she stripped herself of bodily attachment and united herself with holiness. Then He appeared to him a second time, just as He had appeared to him at Gibeon (as recorded in 1 Kings 9 and 2 Chronicles), and this was a complete prophecy and a lengthy Divine communication filled with love and affection. Even after the powers of matter interrupted this union, the Spirit of Hashem nevertheless remained attached to Solomon's soul afterward through the Temple that he had built, concerning which Hashem had said that He would dwell in the thick darkness. He now relates how the soul separated itself from the body and how the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, the powers of matter—were unable to extinguish Solomon's holiness and his attachment to God even afterward. This song continues until “I sleep, but my heart is awake” (5:2).

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Upon”—The beloved, Solomon's soul, began to remember the love of her heavenly Beloved, blessed be He, and to seek Him upon her bed in the nights. For before that night on which Hashem appeared to Solomon in a second vision, he was preparing himself for prophecy night after night (after first seeking His presence through prayer and sacrifices). Therefore it says “in the nights” in the plural, indicating that he persisted in this for many nights. “But I did not find Him”—that is, he did not attain prophecy. For from the time he multiplied prayers and sacrifices, the fourteen days of the dedication celebration passed, and still the word of Hashem had not yet appeared to him.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “I will arise”—Until at last she rose from her bed and went about seeking him in the city, and also in the marketplaces and the streets, yet she did not find him. We have already explained that the city of Jerusalem mentioned in this book is an allegory for the totality of the powers of the body, the allegorical “little city.” All its inhabitants—that is, all its faculties—have their own dwellings and houses, each operating in a particular organ and manifesting itself in a distinct place. Thus within the body there is a wise man, an understanding man, a man of knowledge, a painter, a thinker, a guardian, and one who remembers—that is, the faculties of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, imagination, thought, retention, and memory. Likewise, there is one who sees, one who hears, one who smells, one who tastes delicacies, and one who touches—that is, the senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. All of these emerge from the rational soul, whose seat is in the brain, and they extend into specific organs and locations. Similarly, within the body there is one who is jealous, one who is proud, one who is cruel, one who is courageous, one who is bold-faced, one who is humble, one who is compassionate, one who is tender-hearted, and one who is bashful—that is, the traits of jealousy, pride, cruelty, courage, boldness, humility, compassion, and shame. All these arise from the vital soul, whose seat is in the heart. Likewise, there is one who eats, one who digests food, and one who expels waste—that is, the nutritive, digestive, and expulsive powers, which arise from the vegetative soul, whose seat is in the liver. Each faculty appears and acts in its own particular place. Now, just as a city contains marketplaces and streets where all its inhabitants gather after leaving their private chambers in order to conduct business and converse with one another, so that these places become public domains, so too the body possesses marketplaces and streets where its powers gather together. In the imaginative faculty gather the powers of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In the emotional faculty gather pride, jealousy, boldness, humility, compassion, courage, fearfulness, and similar traits. In the appetitive faculty gather the powers associated with eating, drinking, digestion, and the like. Accordingly, the poet depicts Solomon's soul as going out to seek her heavenly Beloved and wandering through the city—that is, attempting to attain this lofty perception by means of the bodily faculties. She also passes through the marketplaces and streets—that is, through the comprehensive faculties of the body. Yet even so she does not find Him, for He cannot be attained through any material faculty, nor can the soul cleave to pure spirituality while it remains within the city and the body. Even though it has left the private chambers and occupies itself with the more comprehensive powers represented by the marketplaces and streets, it is impossible to attain prophetic perception until it has gone beyond the city and completely separated itself from matter.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “The watchmen found me”—Then, because of the soul's intense longing for its Beloved, it began to leave the city—that is, to strip itself of matter and abandon its inhabitants, as well as the general faculties within it. It passed beyond and separated itself even from the appetitive and imaginative powers, until it was found by the watchmen of the city round about it. This represents the final boundary by which life itself is maintained. If the soul were to pass beyond this last limit and cross this final boundary, it would be outside the city altogether. This is an allegory that the soul had almost departed from the body. There, once again, it inquired concerning the heavenly Beloved, the One whom its soul loved.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: “Scarcely”—She had scarcely passed beyond the watchmen and gone outside the city when she found the one whom her soul loved. She resolved firmly that now she would never let him go until she had brought him into her mother's house, so that he might remain with her in a fixed abode and no longer leap upon the mountains of Bether.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Scarcely”—“Scarcely had I passed by the watchmen”—for she did not pass them entirely, since had she done so her soul would have departed with a kiss. Rather, she had almost passed beyond them, for the soul already stood upon the threshold, nearer to the higher realms and farther from the city—that is, the body—beyond its boundary. Thus all the powers of the body were suspended, for the soul had gone forth and separated itself from them. Then I found him whom my soul loves. At that moment prophecy came upon her through the cessation of the bodily powers, so that scarcely any life remained within him. “I held him”—The heavenly beloved resolved that now she would never let go of her Beloved. “Until I had brought him into my mother's house”—that is, from this point onward it would not be as in the previous occasions, when after the prophecy ended the exalted Beloved returned to His holy dwelling in heaven. For at those earlier times the Temple had not yet been built, and the Divine Presence had no permanent place to dwell among those below. But after the Temple was built, Hashem began to cause His glory to dwell among the children of Israel, as it is written, “I have surely built You a lofty house, a place for You to dwell forever.” Through the Temple of Hashem, His Holy Spirit remained attached to those who built it, for this was the primary purpose of the Temple's construction, as it is written, “Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” Therefore she says that now she would not release Him until she brought Him into her mother's house—the body—and into the chamber of her conception, which is the Holy of Holies beneath the wings of the cherubim.

Allegory: “Who is this” ... “Behold his bed” ... [the poet speaks] When the beloved returned from the wilderness, those who saw her were astonished. How had she escaped by night from Solomon's bed? How had Solomon's mighty men, the guardians of the bed, failed to stop her? Therefore they said, “Who is this coming up from the wilderness?” For “behold, Solomon's bed is surrounded by sixty mighty men,” who guard the bed on every side. They are all armed with swords and trained in warfare. How then did they not stand against her, and how was she able to flee from Solomon's bed into the wilderness? (The phrase “like columns of smoke” depicts the abundance of perfumes with which she was scented by her beloved, who is filled with spices and fragrant plants, as it says, “For the fragrance of your good oils” and “a cluster of henna blossoms.” The fragrance became so dense that it seemed like smoke possessing substance, for she was “perfumed with myrrh and frankincense” and every kind of merchant's powder.) The answer is that each man's sword remained upon his thigh. These mighty men were unable to draw their swords against her; their swords remained in their sheaths and stayed fastened to their sides. The reason was because of fear in the night. A terror of the night fell upon them, and they were seized with fear, allowing her to pass without hindrance.

Figurative Meaning: “Who is this”—He asks in wonder how the soul was able to separate itself from the body, and how it escaped on the night of the vision from Solomon's bed—that is, from the body, upon whose couch it lay in deep sleep—until the Divine spirit came upon it in the wilderness, that is, outside the body, while separated from the city, which symbolizes the body. “Ascending”—it ascends the ladder from the wilderness, which symbolizes the spiritual world, far removed from the city of man, whose existence is constrained by matter and corporeality. (“Like columns of smoke”—just as smoke arises when the fine and subtle parts of a compound are separated from the heavy earthy elements by the element of fire, which divides the components and lifts the finer and more spiritual parts upward while the earthy element becomes ashes and remains below, so too through the Divine fire and the flame of love for God that burned within her heart, the spiritual soul separated itself from the dust and ascended upward like smoke that cleaves to the consuming fire. “Perfumed with myrrh and frankincense”—for incense arises from the fragrant particles separated from a material substance through the agency of fire. (This is the difference between incense and smoke: incense comes from moist substances heated by fire or from fragrant substances.) It is as though, through the burning of her love and the Divine fire, an incense of myrrh and frankincense ascended. We have already explained (1:13) that myrrh, the musk obtained from the blood of the musk-deer, symbolizes the most refined and fragrant elements of the vital soul, while frankincense, whose fragrance comes from the frankincense tree, symbolizes the finest elements of the vegetative soul. Thus, when the soul ascended into spirituality, it brought with it the spiritual essence contained within the vital and vegetative souls, performing upon them a kind of spiritual alchemy through the great purifying fire that refines and separates away the dross, until they too were transformed into holiness. She also brought with her “every powder of the merchant,” an allegory for all the soul's various faculties and attributes, every one of which was purified into a pleasing fragrance and became holy and spiritual, while the dust and the body were separated from them.) He asks in amazement how this could have happened, and yet:

Figurative Meaning: “Behold, Solomon's bed is surrounded by sixty mighty men.” That is, the structure of the body—which is Solomon's bed, upon which the soul lies and in which it is confined as upon an iron couch, not departing from it throughout its lifetime—is guarded on every side by sixty mighty men. These are the organs of the body. Although there are two hundred and forty-eight organs in total, they may be divided into groups of sixty surrounding it. (Two groups of sixty are entirely external organs, as enumerated in Mishnah Ohalot 1:8–9: thirty in the sole of one foot and thirty in the other, thirty in the hand on one side and thirty in the hand on the other. Another sixty organs are more internal, though still external relative to those that follow them: ten in the ankle, two in the shin, five in the knee, one in the thigh, three in the hip, two in the windpipe, two in the elbow, one in the upper arm, and four in the shoulder—thirty on one side and likewise on the other. The remaining sixty-eight organs constitute the principal structure of the body: the twenty-two ribs, the eighteen vertebrae of the spine, nine in the head, eight in the neck, six at the opening of the heart, and five in its apertures. Yet the principal symbolic number is sixty, the largest complete grouping.) Thus these sixty mighty organs guard the soul so that it cannot descend from the bed—that is, from the body. They are called “the mighty men of Israel.” Just as Israel strove with the angel and prevailed over that spiritual being, so these mighty ones prevail over the Divine soul and say, “I will not let you go,” refusing to allow it to separate from them. And these mighty men...

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “All of them hold swords”—That is, they prevail over the soul both by their very nature, for according to nature the soul cannot separate itself from them and remains imprisoned within them, like a mighty warrior holding a sword who prevails through his inherent strength; and also by their training in warfare, for they continually wage war against the soul's spirituality through military stratagems, immersing it in materiality, like one trained in battle who conquers through skill and tactics. Thus the question remains: Who is this coming up from the wilderness? How did the soul depart and rise from its bed? He answers: “Each man with his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the nights.” Through the fear and trembling that fell upon the organs of the body—for when the Spirit of God comes upon the prophets, great terror falls upon them, their limbs become weakened, their thoughts are confounded, and the structure of their bodies seems to dissolve and melt away, as it is written, “Fear came upon me, and trembling,” and “I was terrified and fell upon my face,” and as Maimonides explains in the Laws of the Foundations of the Torah—therefore their sword returned to their thigh, their natural force and material strength were nullified, and they could no longer restrain this daughter of heaven from separating herself from them. (“Each man with his sword upon his thigh” indicates that only the power of matter remained in the thigh, the extremity of the body and the seat of generation. This corresponds to the verse, “He touched the socket of his thigh,” where Jacob did not entirely separate himself from materiality while wrestling with the angel, as explained in the Zohar on Vayishlach and in the author's discussion there.)

Moreover, even after she returned from the wilderness, her beloved continued to meet with her from time to time without anyone disturbing them. He answers that King Solomon made for himself a palanquin (appiryon). It was customary to seat the bride on the day of her wedding in a special palanquin prepared for her honor and dignity. At that time the king desired to betroth the beloved so that she would become his bride and betrothed wife, whereas until then he had regarded her only as a concubine. Previously she had been confined and guarded by the daughters of Jerusalem, like a lily among thorns. For this purpose he made a palanquin, intending to enter beneath the wedding canopy as a bridegroom with his bride. This palanquin was fashioned with every kind of beauty. Its frame was made from the trees of Lebanon.

Figurative Meaning: “A palanquin”—He now comes to answer the question of how the daughters of Jerusalem withdrew from the beloved—that is, how the material powers separated themselves from Solomon's soul and left it alone in communion with God, its Beloved. Moreover, even after this vision, Solomon's soul did not separate itself from its attachment to God, but continued to behold through the Holy Spirit and remained devoted to spirituality for many years (until his old age, when his material wives turned his heart aside and he built high places for physical desires). He answers that at that time King Solomon made a palanquin for this beloved. That is, he now desired to enthrone his Divine soul so that it would no longer be merely a concubine serving the desires and pleasures of the body and remaining subject to its commands. Rather, it would sit like a bride in a palanquin, becoming the mistress of the house and a queen ruling and commanding the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, the powers of the body. The king, representing the impulse and the appetitive faculty, would then come into her glorious dwelling. By this he alludes to the Temple that Solomon built, whose chambers, halls, and divisions were themselves a representation of the various parts of the soul connected with matter, according to their respective functions, as will later be explained. All the rites and services performed there were intended to elevate the material powers toward God. This was the purpose of the sacrifices: that the life-force of animals, the vegetative soul represented in meal-offerings and libations, and the spiritual element hidden within inanimate matter represented by the salt, would all be elevated to spirituality through the heavenly fire that separates and refines what is worthy. Along with them, the rational soul of the worshiper would also be joined, as the one offering the sacrifice would dedicate his own soul entirely to God in thought. Since all the actions of the Sanctuary, the sacrifices, and their intentions were carried out through physical and material acts involving material offerers and material offerings, the body itself—which is the “King Solomon” of the allegory—and its powers entered into the palanquin and bridal chamber of the soul and became betrothed to her through righteousness and the service of God. Thus she would become his wife, producing blessed offspring, and all the powers of the body in their material activities would be drawn after the heavenly beloved who ruled over the body's actions. (For this reason he now calls him “King Solomon” rather than simply “the king,” as will be explained.) He further explains that this palanquin was made from the trees of Lebanon. Since the symbolism of the Temple was that the body should be elevated and spiritualized, and that the practical intellect should act for Divine purposes, so that matter itself—represented by King Solomon—and all its activities would become intellectual and godly, he chose for the collective souls of Israel, who dwelt in the Temple and through it became a chariot for the Divine Presence, a material substance stronger and more refined than human flesh: the trees of Lebanon. For the substance of plant life is stronger than that of animals and is not compounded to the same degree. As was explained earlier (1:17) concerning “the beams of our house are cedars.”

Allegory: And its pillars were made of silver, etc. And who was the one dwelling within it? Paved with love from the daughters of Jerusalem. (Ratzuf is related to ritzpah, a glowing coal.) The flame of love gathered from the daughters of Jerusalem dwelt within it. That is, the love abstracted and distilled from all the beautiful maidens and all the daughters of Jerusalem was collected there. He depicts it as though the king's love for his beloved bride were equal in measure to his love for all the beautiful daughters together.

Figurative Meaning: “Its pillars”—He now explains in detail the structure of the palanquin, which is the Temple, how it was arranged and ordered, and how its three divisions corresponded to the three divisions of the body, which serve as sanctuaries for the three divisions of the soul. As I explained at length in Eretzot HaShalom, Discourse 3, the essence of the matter is as follows. When we contemplate this “small world,” namely man, with respect to his two parts—the powers of the soul, which are the true essence of man, and the limbs and organs of the body, which are the garments in which the soul clothes itself, garments of skin and flesh to cover its nakedness—we find that they are divided into three levels. The first level is the natural and vegetative soul, which dwells in the lower part of the body, in the chambers of the abdomen below the chest. There is its dwelling place and all the organs through which it performs its work of sustaining and developing the body: the stomach, liver, intestines, and digestive organs that prepare food and distribute portions to all the limbs according to their needs through the known faculties of attraction, retention, digestion, and expulsion. Above it, beyond the diaphragm that separates the lower from the upper regions, dwells the vital soul in the region of the chest, in the heart from which the issues of life proceed. Above that, in the upper sphere of the body—the head and skull—the rational soul has built for itself a lofty dwelling, a permanent habitation. After explaining there the correspondence between these three divisions of the small world and the three divisions of the great world—the terrestrial world, the celestial spheres, and the world of separate intelligences—we demonstrated that, according to our inherited tradition, there are yet two additional levels of soul that the natural philosophers did not perceive. There is the Divine soul, emanated from the very glory of God from the World of the Throne, granted when His people keep His statutes and teachings. This is higher than the natural rational soul and is called Chayah, for it lives forever in the bundle of life with Hashem its God. Higher still is the precious soul bestowed upon prophets from the World of Emanation, called Yechidah, because its root is in perfect unity with the One and Only God. Through it, individuals rise above the masses and become godlike, ruling over actions, seeing without eyes, hearing without ears, walking through the halls of the King, performing wonders and mighty deeds, fulfilling the verse, “The righteous rules in the fear of God.” Since through the Temple the collective souls of Israel were united to become a chariot for the Divine Presence—for there all the components of their souls gathered and stood together as one individual person, as I explained there at length—it follows that the Temple, which is the collective body, must contain all the features found in the body of an individual. Just as the human body, which serves as a garment for the powers of the soul, contains organs and instruments through which the soul's faculties operate and express themselves outwardly, so too the Temple, which is the palanquin made by King Solomon to serve as a garment for the collective person, the collective soul, must contain all the instruments and divisions found in an individual human being. And indeed this is so, as one who reflects upon its construction will perceive. As Maimonides writes at the beginning of the Laws of the Temple: among the essential elements of the Temple are the Sanctuary, the Holy of Holies, and a surrounding enclosure corresponding to the curtains of the courtyard in the Tabernacle. These are precisely the divisions to which the poet alludes here when he says, “Its pillars he made of silver.” The Midrash explains: “Its pillars he made of silver” refers to the pillars; “its couch of gold” refers to the boards; “its seat of purple” refers to the curtain. The courtyard of the Tent of Meeting in the Tabernacle, and corresponding to it the vestibule of the Temple, parallels the organs of the natural soul—the stomach and all the abdominal chambers that digest food, prepare it, and expel waste. Likewise there stood the altar upon which the spiritual food and the bread of Hashem were continually consumed, along with its pots, shovels, and firepans. One who reflects carefully will see that they resemble the stomach in every respect. This is symbolized by the phrase “its pillars he made of silver,” for the courtyard was surrounded by pillars rather than boards. The organs represented there are not of such exalted importance as to require covering with boards; rather, they grow and stand upright like trees planted by streams of water. They were made of silver because silver is of lower value than gold. The Sanctuary, the middle division, corresponds to the organs of the vital soul. Therefore it contained instruments related to a higher function: the incense altar, which provided spiritual delight, for the soul takes pleasure in fragrance. This corresponds to the second digestion in the heart, a wholly spiritual and airy process. Likewise, the lighting of the Menorah with its seven lamps corresponds to the seven lobes of the lungs that fan the heart and kindle the spirit of life. For this reason the Sanctuary was enclosed with boards, requiring greater protection, and these were overlaid with gold, which is stronger and more precious than silver. Thus he says, “its couch of gold,” for there the soul reclines as a resting place for the rational soul. Beyond this was the Holy of Holies, corresponding to the faculties of the rational soul. There stood the Ark and the two tablets of stone. There the Lawgiver's portion was hidden, and there the Torah of universal reason was stored. It was the chariot of the Divine Presence resting upon it. It was separated by a curtain of purple, and thus he says, “its seat of purple.” Above the Ark stood the two cherubim, representing the two higher souls whose roots are in holiness, Chayah and Yechidah, between whose wings the heavenly Beloved dwells and communes with His bride, the beloved of whom such glorious things are spoken throughout this sacred song. He now explains that “its interior was paved with love from the daughters of Jerusalem.” There was found the Divine flame, the heavenly fire that crouched like a lion and consumed the entirety of the love gathered from the daughters of Jerusalem—that is, from the material powers that had been purified into love of God. This came from the souls ascending upon the altar through the choicest portions of the mineral, vegetable, and animal realms, together with the rational soul, all ascending upon the altar of Hashem for acceptance through the exalted beloved, the Divine soul, who there unites with her Beloved and whose love encompasses them all. Thus the daughters of Jerusalem now share in the Beloved's love together with the beloved bride. Even King Solomon himself dwells within the palanquin he made for this beloved, who now reigns. Before her all bow down, and for her sake they serve the King of Glory who dwells with her. (For this reason he is now called “King Solomon” and not merely “the king.” The simple term “the king” refers to the old and foolish king who rules within the body, whereas “King Solomon” alludes to the peace established between the soul and the body and its impulses, when the inclination and all its powers submit themselves beneath the rule of the soul.)

Allegory: “Go forth”—By means of this, the beloved found a way to send the daughters of Zion away from her. For she said to them that they should go out from her to behold the crown with which the king's mother had crowned King Solomon on the day of his wedding—to see the beloved. (He calls them “daughters of Zion” because she had now been given attendants from among the noble and distinguished daughters of Zion.) While they went out to look and thus separated themselves from her, she was meanwhile able to be alone with her beloved.

Figurative Meaning: “Go forth”—Through this, the holy beloved was able to send the daughters of Zion—that is, the powers of materiality—away from her, so that they would not hinder her from uniting with her heavenly Beloved. Therefore she said to them, “O daughters of Zion,” meaning the powers of matter, “go forth,” separate yourselves from me. Let no one remain with me while I unite with my Beloved, blessed be He. “And behold King Solomon,” meaning that even the king, the impulse itself in its sovereignty, has become a king whose portion is peace. For now there is no longer strife or warfare between it and the Divine soul. “With the crown with which his mother crowned him,” for even his mother—that is, the source from which the impulse arose, namely matter and its powers—has crowned him with a crown for this wedding, in which he is joined to the heavenly beloved in a union of love. Even the body and its powers now offer themselves upon the altar of love as a whole burnt offering to Hashem. They are transformed into spirituality through obedience to the commandments of God. With this he is adorned with the crown of bridegrooms—the crown of the practical intellect—through which he is united with the all-perfect bride, the holy soul, to guard her charge and carry out her service. Thus the daughters of materiality willingly departed from her, and through her service she was able to unite herself with the Holy Spirit dwelling within the palanquin.
