Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: The Fifth Song: This song continues until “We have a little sister” (8:8). It relates that in the latter days the beloved came to the beloved openly before all to see. The daughters of Jerusalem and even the king himself argued with her, urging her not to separate from them. But she clothed herself with strength because of the greatness of her love and went out to her beloved into the wilderness, never to return. At last the singers proclaimed: “Many waters cannot quench love.” For love triumphed over them all.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: “Where?” After the daughters of Jerusalem came to recognize the excellence of the beloved and the preciousness of this love, they agreed to go with her to seek him. They asked: “Where has your beloved gone?” If you know the place where he is, tell us. Or at least, if you do not know the exact place where he is, tell us which way he has turned and in what direction he has gone, and we will seek him in that direction.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: The Fifth Song continues until “We have a little sister” (8:8). It describes that in the latter days, when Solomon’s appointed time came to be gathered to his people, then the heavenly Beloved came to the soul of Solomon to gather her to Himself into the bond of life, openly before all. It also recounts the dispute that then took place between the powers of the body itself and the faculties of the physical existence against the soul, in an attempt to prevent her from separating from them. But she then clothed herself in the strength of Hashem to return to God who gave her. For love is strong as death. In this section it describes the state of the soul at the time of death and afterwards, until she returns to her source in the house of her Father.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Where?”—It relates that when Solomon’s time of passing came, the powers of the body also came to recognize the greatness of the heavenly Beloved and the preciousness of the soul’s longing for cleaving to Him. They all agreed to seek Hashem and to yearn after Him. Then, when the time arrived for the soul of Solomon to be gathered to her people and to God, all the “daughters of the city,” meaning all the faculties of the body, gathered around the heavenly beloved soul, seeking to be gathered together with her to her place and to her Beloved. They ask her, “Where has your beloved gone?”—for at times the soul attains her Beloved through prophecy and the Holy Spirit, in which case she only seeks the place of attainment, to come to the place where the King is in His chamber. In this sense they say, “Where has your beloved gone?” And at other times the soul attains the Divine through contemplation and intellectual inquiry, in which case she must also seek the path of attainment, for speculative inquiry can sometimes go astray and fail to find the true way to behold the face of God. Therefore they say, “Where has your beloved turned?”—in what direction has He gone—so that we may seek Him through investigation and pursuit.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “My Beloved”—While they were speaking of this, and they were in the king’s garden, the Beloved descended from the hills of separation and came into His garden. But the essence of His coming into the garden is not for the garden in general, but for the bed of spices—that is, for His beloved soul, which is His fragrance within this garden, the very plot that gives forth scent before Him. For He comes to tend the gardens, and there He shepherds His flock; yet He does not gather for Himself anything except the lilies of that bed, namely the love of His bride and the delight of His desire.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “My Beloved”—In the midst of this, the soul of Solomon perceives that the heavenly Beloved is descending from His holy dwelling to gather her unto Himself. She says: “My beloved has gone down to His garden.” That is, not to the garden as a whole—which represents all the powers of the body and its many faculties—but specifically to the bed of spices, which is the Divine soul, the spiritual soul planted within, like a garden bed sown with five seeds, as in “Bless Hashem, O my soul” said five times by David, corresponding to the Holy One, blessed be He, and to the soul. This is the highest fragrance that rises as a pleasing aroma. “To tend the gardens”—that is, He tends the gardens, meaning the bodily faculties and their growths. Through death they are gradually refined, returning to the elements, and from there may be transformed and rebuilt anew in other cycles. But “the lilies”—the holy souls—He gathers to Himself and places them in His treasury. And how fittingly the sages interpreted this verse of the death of the righteous.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: And she says: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine,”</b meaning that the Beloved tends to her by bringing her lilies as a gift and offering of love, signifying the mutual attachment and complete union between the soul and her Beloved.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “I am my beloved’s”—Now she unites with her heavenly Beloved, which is the death by “kissing.” She says, “I am my beloved’s,” for she herself initiates this attachment through her intense longing for God. And the heavenly Shepherd brings her lilies—the fruits of her righteousness and good deeds—which rise as a pleasing fragrance before Him.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Allegory: “Beautiful”—[The speech of the Beloved:] “My beloved, you are beautiful as Tirzah,” meaning that through your having become reconciled to Me and My will having returned to you, you are now pleasing to Me once again. “You are comely as Jerusalem,” that is, like all its daughters together. “Awesome as an army with banners,” like multiple encampments of forces, for now all are seen as drawn near to you and standing before you in awe and reverence.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Beautiful”—The heavenly Beloved says to the soul of Solomon: “You are beautiful,” because your deeds have now been accepted and your sins have been atoned for. “You are comely as Jerusalem,” that is, like the entire body and all its faculties, which are symbolized by Jerusalem and its daughters, for you are equivalent to them all and are the principal one in My eyes. “Awesome as an army with banners,” like many encampments and multitudes of hosts, for through the Torah and good deeds in which you engaged, a host of holy beings and angels of peace have arisen around you to guard you in all your ways, and no stranger may come near you.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Turn away your eyes”—From now on, turn your eyes away from Me no longer as you have done until now, when you looked toward Solomon’s chambers and only cast glances toward Me from the side. Now direct them fully toward Me, for they are My delight and My glory; therefore let them cleave to Me continually. And thus He continues to describe her beauty, as explained above regarding her hair and other features.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Turn away”—From now on, “turn away your eyes,” which until now stood before Me from afar, for you were in the chambers of Solomon, that is, within the body, casting your intellectual gaze from a distance, confined within the enclosure of matter and physicality (as we have already explained the matter of these eyes above in 1:15). Now turn them toward Me, for you shall be with Me beneath My throne of glory, for these eyes have dazzled Me and magnified Me in the world, for through them My greatness and kingship have been made known. And now he returns to enumerate the virtues and refinements brought by the soul—namely the hair, the teeth, the cheeks, and the essence of the soul itself, as explained in detail above (chapter 4). He omits the neck and the breasts, which describe her governance over the appetitive faculty and bodily desires, for these are now no longer relevant, since she has separated from the body and its faculties and left behind materiality.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Sixty”—[Seeing the daughters of Jerusalem coming there and standing around her] she says to them: “Does not Solomon have many wives—sixty queens, eighty concubines, and innumerable maidens? Why then should he still seek to take my beloved, who is unique to me?” For she thereby emphasizes the exclusivity and singular devotion of her bond, implying that no other attachment can replace her love.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Sixty”—She turns her attention toward the daughters of Jerusalem, which are the faculties of the body now gathered around the soul, and says: “Does not Solomon, which is the governing power within the body, have many powers and faculties? Sixty queens—that is, the principal governing forces that rule the body; and beneath them eighty concubines—lower faculties of lesser rank, corresponding to the status of concubines; and maidens without number—all the remaining traits and powers that are too numerous to be counted.”

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “One is she”—She is to me as a dove, my perfect one; I have no other beloved besides her. Then he adds: but she is also one to her mother—meaning that no other daughter has ever been born like her. She is pure and chosen for her mother, as though her mother selected for herself all the beauty and grace found in the world and embodied it in this daughter. So much so that all the daughters saw her and blessed her. Even the queens and concubines of Solomon, though they were her rivals, saw her and praised her.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: But “one is she, my dove, my perfect one”—the holy soul is singular among all the faculties of the body; there is no peer or companion among all corporeal powers, for she is distinct from all the products of the lower world. “One is she to her mother”—the body is called metaphorically her “mother,” for material nature has not produced another like her among all the faculties it brings forth. “She is pure to her who bore her”—she is the refined essence and chosen portion of nature as a whole; for after nature rose from inanimate to vegetative, vegetative to animal, and animal to rational, this heavenly daughter emerged as the most select of all, the crown of souls and glory of creation, so that all the daughters saw her and called her blessed, for all creation recognizes she is the most blessed and the true source of blessing, and even queens and concubines—meaning all bodily faculties—praised her, for she alone is incorruptible and truly intellectual, unlike all powers bound to the body, and there is none like her among them.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Who is this”—Now the daughters of Jerusalem approach her and ask: “Who is this who looks forth like the dawn?” The dawn is the moment that unites night and day, when one sees the setting of the moon in its beauty and the rising of the sun in its splendor. So too she appears like both luminaries seen at dawn, for she is “fair as the moon and clear as the sun,” and she is also “awesome as an army with banners,” like the multitude of stars and the host of heaven shining at the break of day.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “Who is this?”—The powers of the body now perceive the separation of the soul of Solomon from her corporeal dwelling and ask, “Who is this who looks forth from the windows,” emerging from the cracks of the dust and the body, as she stretches forth her head from the window outward in order to depart from the body. She is like the dawn, for the dawn is the boundary between day and night, the end of night and the beginning of day. So too she now stands at the boundary between temporal life—darkness, confusion, and disorder like night—and eternal life, where “the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining ever brighter until the day is established.” She is now “fair as the moon and clear as the sun,” for as long as the soul is in this world, enclosed in the material body, she is like the moon, which has no light of its own but receives its light from the sun. For the soul’s illumination in this world is not intrinsic but received from the great sun, the light of God, which shines upon her and passes through the chambers of the soul. Just as the moon, being dense and material, reflects the rays of the sun, so too the soul, while bound to matter, receives Divine light through its refined and purified faculties. But when she departs from the body to return to her source, she becomes like the sun, whose light is intrinsic to it; thus the soul returns to being an intellectual essence shining by its own spiritual light as a Divine being. Yet at this moment of separation from the body she is like the dawn, in which both luminaries are seen together: she is still within the body yet already revealed partly outside it. She is also “awesome as an army with banners,” for she is accompanied by multitudes of stars and spiritual lights, the mitzvot and Torah she performed, and angelic illuminations. (And in the Zohar, Mishpatim 97a, it is said that when a soul is meritorious, many holy hosts prepare themselves to accompany her and bring her into the Garden of Eden.)

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “I went down”—The beloved soul replies, offering explanations for why she left her chamber and was seen looking outward. She says that she descended to the garden of nuts, meaning she turned to observe the lower realm of nature and its ordered structure. There she walked to see the budding of the valley streams, contemplating the flow and renewal of existence from its sources. From there she proceeded to observe the blossoming of the vine, that is, the unfolding of growth, vitality, and spiritual fruitfulness within creation.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “I went down”—The soul replies: “I went down to the garden of nuts.” It is known in the teachings of the mystics that matter, insofar as it is bound up with the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, is compared to an almond or nut, whose inner kernel is surrounded by four layers of shell. The sages at length explain the correspondence of the nut’s shells to the layers of material concealment and deficiency (see Zohar Bereishit 16a, 19b; Terumah 140b; Ra’aya Meheimna Pinchas 287b). Even the macrocosm, with its four husks, is likened to a nut, as Ezekiel saw in the vision of the Chariot: a great storm wind, a great cloud, and a blazing fire, and within it the appearance of electrum; and similarly Elijah at Mount Horeb saw wind, earthquake, fire, and a still small voice. Thus she says she descended to the garden of nuts, meaning her bodily existence, to survey its powers and activities and to see what she could salvage from it at the time of separation. From there she descended to see the budding of the valley streams, the faculties and potentials that the body had produced during its lifetime. Then she went on to see whether the vine had blossomed and the pomegranates had budded; as already explained (2:13; 4:13), the vine symbolizes intellectual contemplation and insight, as it is the source of wine which represents understanding, while the pomegranates symbolize the 613 commandments. Thus she went to examine this “nut” of the body—what it had achieved in knowledge and what it had produced in action—so as to carry with her only what would be perfected at the appointed time when she would be clothed again in her spiritual garments.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: However, she now retracts her previous explanation and says: “I did not know.” That is, in truth I myself do not know why I went out. Rather, “my soul”—meaning my Beloved, the shepherd of my soul, who is my very life and spirit—He placed me upon the chariots of my noble people. He is the One who moved me like a chariot, swift and driven, toward my noble people, toward the spiritual forces of my inner being, so that I should no longer remain confined within the chambers of Solomon, but should go forth and be borne along toward the company of my exalted inner faculties.

Trans. Betzalel Avraham Feinstein, 2026

Figurative Meaning: “I did not know”—In the midst of her reflections, as she contemplates the actions of her body and its deeds in this world and reviews all that it accomplished while it lived, the time of departure arrives, and she is called to gather her feet upon the bed and go forth on the path of eternity, ceasing to think further about the affairs of this life. She says: “I did not know.” That is, I no longer perceive or attend to any matter of this world. “For my soul”—that is, Hashem, who is my soul and my spirit—“placed me as the chariots of my noble people,” meaning He made me like a chariot and commanded me to ride upon fiery chariots and horses of fire, ascending in a whirlwind to heaven to my noble people (from the expression “I am gathered to my people”), that I may swiftly ascend to the righteous who dwell in the world of souls.
