Figurative Meaning: “Return, return”—After it became known among the daughters of Jerusalem that she was ready to be borne and to return to her people and to her Beloved, they began to plead with her and entreat her not to leave them, saying: “Return, return, O Shulammite; return that we may look upon you,”“What will you see in the Shulammite?”the dance of the two camps—always surrounded by two encampments that stand guard over me? Thus I am as though a captive among you, constantly guarded on all sides by opposing forces.
She replies: **“What will you gaze upon in the Shulammite?”**the dance of the two camps—for I am surrounded by two opposing camps: one is the camp of God and the holy hosts, the side of the good inclination calling me to detach from all worldly desires and cleave to Torah, service, and holiness; and the other is the camp of the Satan and the armies of the evil inclination, the forces of the body, which seek that I fulfill bodily desires and material passions. How can I dwell peacefully among you between these two camps? “Woe to me from my Creator and woe to me from my inclination.”```
Figurative Meaning: “How beautiful are your footsteps”—The daughters of Jerusalem respond to the daughter of nobility: indeed, your steps are very beautiful—but only when you are wearing sandals. If you go out barefoot to your beloved shepherd, then your beauty is diminished. “The curves of your thighs are like ornaments,” like gold-worked jewelry, but only if they are adorned with ornaments made by an artisan. That is, your beauty is seen only when it is dressed in the proper garments and adornments; without them—when you go out to your beloved shepherd—you appear unadorned and lacking those external perfections.
Figurative Meaning: “How beautiful are your steps”—The daughters of the body respond to the soul of nobility, that is, the Divine soul: indeed, your steps are beautiful. This refers to the soul as the source of life for all three divisions of its faculties as described by the philosophers—the rational, the vital, and the vegetative soul. But when the soul is gathered to its people, all the bodily powers that depend on it are extinguished and cease to exist, and only the spirit returns to God who gave it. Therefore they address her and remind her that when she departs from them, all her functions in their various levels will cease. They arrange her actions from the lowest to the highest: first, motion, which is attributed to the feet, is indeed very beautiful, and thus they say, “How beautiful are your steps,” but this is only “in sandals,” meaning only while she is still clothed in the body, which is like a shoe (as explained earlier 5:3). But when she is called to “remove the sandal,” that is, when she sheds the material body from herself (as in “Remove your sandals from your feet,” meaning removal of materiality), then motion ceases entirely and the body remains like inert stone, unable to move from its place. Second, the vegetative soul’s powers, such as nourishment and generation, symbolized by the thighs, also cease at death. Thus “the curves of your thighs are like ornaments,”</b meaning they produce offspring for the continuation of the species, but this is only so long as the body remains, which is the “artisan” performing the work; once the soul departs, the artisan ceases from its labor.
Figurative Meaning: “Your navel” is likened to a round bowl that contains liquids within it, and it is accustomed to be filled with wine in abundance—see that it does not lack mixed wine, for in the house of the poor shepherd there will be no such lavish mixing of wine for you. “Your belly is like a heap of wheat set about with lilies,”</b meaning that in the king’s house you have heaps of wheat sufficient to fill the belly, something that would not be available in the house of the poor shepherd.
Figurative Meaning: “Your navel”—They speak to her concerning the faculty of nourishment, which is divided into eating and drinking, through which the body is sustained. They say: “Your navel is like a rounded bowl,” always filled with liquids and distributing its flow through channels to all the limbs of the body. See that this mixture does not cease, for at death the vessel will be broken at its spring, and this entire flow will be cut off, leaving that beautiful vessel—the bowl prepared to receive nourishment—utterly unused. Likewise **“your belly is like a heap of wheat set about with lilies,”**heap of wheat—for after death the wheat will no longer be given to the mill to be ground, and the grinders will cease with the fading of the sound of the millstone.
Figurative Meaning: “Your two breasts”—they are likened to two young gazelles in a place of beauty and delight, meaning in the inner chambers of the king where all treasures of desire are found, and not in the house of the poor shepherd.
Figurative Meaning: After having described the lower faculties—the instruments of the vegetative soul—he now turns to the higher faculties associated with the animal soul, whose dwelling is from the chest upward to the head, and notes the deficiency that will occur when she departs and is gathered to her people. “Your two breasts”—that is, the two powers of the soul, the irascible power and the appetitive power, which are “twin fawns,” meaning they are both offspring of the appetitive faculty (as explained earlier 4:5). They are likened to two young gazelles, but only insofar as they are “twins of a gazelle” within the material world, where the motivating faculty is aroused toward desire and beauty, and the irascible faculty toward jealousy and vengeance and the like. But if she is removed from this physical world, then the almond tree withers and the desires fail, and these powers cease from their activity.
Figurative Meaning: “Your neck” is likened to a tower of ivory, and your eyes to the pools in Heshbon, for they flow with freshness and vitality. All these excellencies, they say, are fitting to be found at the gate of the daughter of multitudes, in a city of perfect beauty, and not in a desolate wilderness. Likewise your nose, which is compared to the tower of Lebanon looking toward Damascus, should be situated toward a settled city and not toward a wasteland. Why then should all these perfect and beautiful faculties dwell alone in barren desert places, cut off from habitation and perfection?
Figurative Meaning: “Your neck” is a symbol of the rule of the intellect and the soul over the body and its appetitive powers, and it is compared to a tower of ivory, from which one fights enemies at the gate; so too from there the soul rules over the bodily faculties, subduing them under its authority (as explained earlier 4:4). Likewise “your eyes”—the eyes of intellect that see, contemplate, deliberate, and reflect on all matters of the body—are like pools where waters gather, for there all perceptions collected by the senses are assembled through the faculty of memory and preservation; they are pools of Heshbon, for they serve calculation, thought, and reckoning of all the ways and actions of the body, their benefits and deficiencies. Surely such faculties are fitting to stand at the gate of Bath-Rabbim, the gate of Jerusalem, which represents the body where the multitude of bodily powers gather and receive the governance and directives of the soul; but after death there is no longer any “weigher, scribe, or reckoner” in Sheol. Likewise “your nose” is compared to the tower of Lebanon, which represents the contemplative intellect—the face and form of the soul itself, since the essence of the soul is intellect. It is like a tower from which one surveys all the plantings of Lebanon and thus contemplates all the deeds established by God in His world and all His creations in the universe above and below. And this “nose” looks toward Damascus, meaning it contemplates the external, material world and all that is found from east to west; unlike the practical intellect which concerns itself only with Jerusalem, i.e., the body and its needs. Yet even this contemplative intellect, insofar as it engages the physical world (symbolized by Damascus, a land of the nations), ceases after death and no longer grasps material beings.
Figurative Meaning: “Your head upon you is like Carmel”—your head, which represents the highest intellectual faculty, is compared in its beauty and majesty to Mount Carmel, signifying exaltedness and splendor. And “the locks of your head are like purple”—the outward manifestations of that intellect appear in a noble and royal dignity. “The king is held captive in the tresses”—that is, even the supreme King, meaning the Divine influence, is bound and drawn, as it were, by the cords of love and attachment to the soul, unable to withdraw, as though constrained in bonds of love and delight.
Figurative Meaning: “Your head”—Here the “head that is upon you” refers to your essential self, the Divine and spiritual substance of the soul itself, which is the head over all your faculties. Thus it says “upon you,” meaning that as you truly are in your essence, this head is like Carmel, full of beauty and abundance, just as Carmel is filled with fruit and richness; so too you are filled with wisdom, knowledge of God, and holiness. Likewise “the hair of your head”—the locks and curls, which symbolize the emanations of intellectual lights that break forth from the soul’s essence and become revealed (as explained earlier in 4:1, 4:5, and 4:11, where hair represents the breaking forth of concealed light into manifestation)—are like purple, symbolizing the realm of the Divine throne, which is described by the mystics as “purple,” the domain of spiritual forces surrounding the Throne, lower than the realm of pure light and emanation from which holy souls originate. And “the king is held in the tresses”—that is, the body, which rules over the small city, is “bound” in the channels flowing from the soul, through which life, sensation, and understanding are drawn into the body; without them it cannot move at all and becomes like a stone. (And in the Midrash HaNe’elam, Vayikra 113b: Rabbi Pinchas said, the soul is taken from the Throne of Glory, which is the “head,” as it says “your head is like Carmel,” and “the hair of your head is like purple”—this is the soul—and “the king is held in the tresses” is the body, which is bound in the grave.)
Figurative Meaning: “How fair you are”—Here the quality of love is considered in an abstract sense. They say to the attribute of love itself: how beautiful and pleasant you are indeed—but only when you are joined with pleasures and delights. If love is connected to enjoyment, then it is considered beautiful and desirable, meaning that if you love the King in a way that brings you all delight and pleasure, then that love is good. But not so is the love directed toward a poor shepherd, in which there is no delight or sensory pleasure attached to it.
Figurative Meaning: “How fair you are”—“You are love itself,” they say, addressing the quality of love in abstraction: you are beautiful and exceedingly pleasant, but only when you are bound to pleasures and temporal delights. That is, if you love the body and live a life of transitory existence, then you will indeed have the pleasures and delights of time, and in that context your love is considered good. But not so in death, for then there are no pleasures or material delights to be found, and such love has no place there.
Figurative Meaning: “This”—Now King Solomon himself comes and speaks to her to prevent her from separating from him. He says to her: behold, this is your stature—you now stand upright with dignity and strength, so that you are likened to a tall palm tree, so lofty that no one can ascend to it. And your breasts are suspended from this height like clusters of fruit, hanging in fullness and beauty from your exalted stature.
Figurative Meaning: “This is your stature”—After portraying how all the faculties of the body and all its powers in their various divisions contend with the soul, each speaking to her individually and pleading that she not separate from them lest they perish through her departure, he now depicts how King Solomon himself—the heart, from which life flows and which is the pulse and vitality that persists until the final moment of death, gathering in itself the flow of blood and life—now separates from its beloved, the soul, and awakens for the last time with all its strength and powers to prevent her from departing from the body. (For it is known that at the final moment the heart exerts itself once more, as a lamp flares up before extinguishing.) He says to her: my soul, behold, “this is your stature,” meaning all the details previously described—from the feet up to the head—constitute the complete stature of the heavenly beloved soul. For the vegetative, animal, and rational faculties together form the full structure of the soul, from which these powers branch out (as explained by Maimonides in his Eight Chapters). And she is “like a palm tree,” which grows upward and whose heart is directed above; so too you are directed upward, and your desire is toward your Husband in heaven. And “your breasts are like clusters,” meaning that your powers have matured like grapes ready for harvest, to be placed in the winepress to produce wine; so too your time of harvest has arrived, to turn away from this world and receive the reward of your deeds in the world of recompense.
Figurative Meaning: Nevertheless, I said: **“I will go up into the palm tree,”**your breasts be like clusters of the vine—so that one who holds them may drink the wine of the grape and become refreshed with its strength—and that the fragrance of your breath be like apples, giving forth a pleasant and delightful aroma.
Figurative Meaning: Nevertheless, **“I said, I will go up into the palm tree,”**hold on to its branches, a metaphor for the body’s final struggle to retain the soul so that it does not separate. “Let your breasts be like clusters of the vine,”“the fragrance of your breath like apples,”</b referring to the contemplative intellect, the “face of the soul,” should be like apples that emit a pleasant fragrance—meaning it should be devoted to the wisdom of Torah and the knowledge of God.
Figurative Meaning: “And your palate is like the best wine”—up to here are the words of King Solomon. The beloved replies: “It goes down to my Beloved.” That is, the sweetness of my palate is not for you, but belongs to my Beloved the Shepherd; therefore do not ascend further to my stature, for I am now going to my Beloved and I belong to Him. “I am my Beloved’s,”“His desire is toward me,”</b meaning even when my lips are at rest in sleep, they still murmur from the intensity of my longing and habitual remembrance of my Beloved, and they utter: “I am my Beloved’s and His desire is toward me.”
Figurative Meaning: “And your palate”—that is, your inner speech of wisdom (as explained earlier on “your mouth is sweetness”), shall be like the best wine, which symbolizes the spirit of holiness, the “good wine” mentioned throughout this book, meaning that the soul consents that if she continues to live she will devote herself only to Torah, wisdom, commandments, holiness, and knowledge of God. She replies: “I am going to my Beloved,”“I am going to the straightnesses,”“causing the lips of sleepers to speak,”</b for at this moment of death and departure, when Solomon is already in his final weakening and his lips are “sleeping” in the sleep of death, those very lips—though faint and fading—murmur and speak through the soul’s final expression, declaring in her name: “I am my Beloved’s and His desire is toward me.”
Figurative Meaning: “I am my Beloved’s and His desire is toward me,” for the soul departs in the “kiss” of death and longing, in a union of desire between the part and the whole and the whole and the part, and she cleaves to her source out of the greatness of her love. (And see Aderet Ha’azinu, p. 288, where Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai is recorded as having uttered this verse at the moment of his passing.)
Figurative Meaning: “Come, my beloved”—The beloved soul turns her face toward her Beloved and says: “Come, my beloved, let us go out into the field,”“Let us lodge in the villages,”</b that is, in the surrounding realms and stations beyond the city of Jerusalem, symbolizing that she is now prepared to leave the center of corporeal life and dwell in the more distant realms as she ascends toward her Beloved.
Figurative Meaning: “Come, my beloved”—Now that the soul has departed from the body, she turns her face toward her supreme Beloved, who stands over her to gather her unto Himself, and says: “Come, my beloved, let us go out from here,”“Let us go out into the field,”“Let us lodge in the villages,”“let us lodge in the villages,”chibbut hakever (the “purgation of the grave”).
Figurative Meaning: “Let us rise early in the morning to the vineyards,”“Let us see whether the vine has blossomed and the pomegranates have budded,”“there I will give you my love,”</b meaning there I will bestow my devotion and attachment. Yet in truth, my Beloved and my love have already blossomed and matured with certainty, and there I will give myself to you and to no other.
Figurative Meaning: “Let us rise early” in the morning to the vineyards—here the “vineyards” symbolize, as already explained, the ultimate purpose of all actions and deeds, meaning we will examine what fruit was produced from all our labor and activity in the corporeal world. “Let us see whether the vine has blossomed,”“the tender grape has opened,”“the pomegranates have budded,”“there I will give you my love,”</b meaning that although it is uncertain whether the vine truly blossomed or the pomegranates truly budded—for sometimes a person engages in Torah and mitzvot not purely for their own sake but for other motives—nevertheless, the love of God itself, when it is done out of pure devotion, is certainly accepted and is the essential offering of the soul, for that is what rises as a pleasing fragrance before Him.
Figurative Meaning: “The mandrakes give forth fragrance”—the beloved soul says: behold, even the mandrakes that are gathered for their pleasant scent, nevertheless their fragrance is not reserved for their owners alone, for they are ownerless in the field and have already given their scent to all who pass by. And likewise all kinds of delights are “at our gates,” meaning all pleasures and delights that serve bodily enjoyment are open and accessible to everyone, and though they may appear new, they are in truth like old things, since one becomes fully satiated with them and they lose their importance. But “my beloved and my love I have stored up for you,”</b meaning this is not something ownerless or common, nor something already consumed and familiar; rather, I have preserved my love for You alone and hidden it from all others, for it belongs only to You.
And “at our gates are all precious fruits,”“new as well as old,”“my beloved I have stored up for you,”</b meaning the love of God—the service performed מתוך אהבה—is what is reserved solely for Him, hidden and dedicated entirely to God alone, and is wholly sanctified.```
