Father of mercy, have compassion on the people borne by Him. May He remember the covenant with the mighty (patriarchs), and deliver us from evil times. May He reproach the evil instinct in the people by Him, and graciously grant that we be an eternal remnant. May He fulfill in good measure our requests for salvation and compassion.

TORAH READING FOR THE SECOND DAY

It happened after these things that God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. He said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt-offering on one of the mountains which I shall say to you.” Early the next morning Abraham rose and saddled his donkey and took his two lads with him, and Isaac his son, and he cut wood for the burnt-offering, and he set out for the place of which God had told him.

On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place from afar. Abraham said to his lads, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go on ahead. We will worship and we will return to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt-offering and placed it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife, and the two of them went together. Isaac said to Abraham his father, “Father?” and he said “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Here are the fire and the wood, but where is the sheep for the burnt-offering?” Abraham said, “God will see to the sheep for the burnt-offering, my son.” And the two of them went together.

They came to the place God had told him about, and Abraham built there an altar and arranged the wood and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar on top of the wood. He reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. Then an angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” He said, “Here I am.” He said, “Do not reach out your hand against the boy; do not do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, because you have not held back your son, your only son, from Me.” Abraham looked up and there he saw a ram caught in a thicket by its horns, and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering instead of his son. Abraham called that place “The LORD will see,” as is said to this day, “On the mountain of the LORD He will be seen.”

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven, and said, “By Myself I swear, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not held back your son, your only son, I will greatly bless you and greatly multiply your descendants, as the stars of heaven and the sand of the seashore, and your descendants shall take possession of the gates of their enemies. Through your descendants, all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have heeded My voice.” Then Abraham returned to his lads, and they rose and went together to Beersheba, and Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

After these events it was said to Abraham: Milka too has borne sons, to Naḥor your brother: Utz his firstborn, and his brother Buz, and Kemuel the father of Aram. And Kesed and Ḥazo and Pildash and Yidlaf and Betuel, (and to Betuel, Rebecca was born); Milka bore these eight to Abraham’s brother, Naḥor. And his concubine, whose name was Re’uma, also bore Tevaḥ, and Gaḥam, and Taḥash and Ma’akha.

MAFTIR

On the first day of the seventh month you shall hold a sacred assembly. You shall do no laborious work, and it shall be a day of the blowing of the shofar for you. You shall make a burnt-offering of pleasing aroma to the LORD: a young bullock, a ram, and seven yearling male lambs; they shall be without blemish. And their meal-offerings, fine flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths of an ephah for the ram, and one-tenth of an ephah for each of the seven lambs, one male goat for atonement. All this aside from the burnt-offering of the New Moon and its meal-offering, and the regular daily burnt-offering with its meal-offering, and their libations according to their ordinance, a burnt-offering of pleasing odor to the LORD.

This is what the Lord has said: “The people who outlived the sword found grace in the desert; Israel, as they moved toward their resting place.” From far away the Lord appeared to me: “I have loved you with an everlasting love, and so by cords of kindness I draw you. I shall build you up once more, you will be built, young maiden Israel. Once more you will adorn yourself with drums and go out dancing to your own music. You shall once more plant vineyards in the hills of Samaria; the planters will plant and will redeem their fruit to eat. The day is coming, watchmen will cry out from Mount Ephraim, ‘Come, let us go up to Zion to the Lord our God.’” For this is what the Lord has said: “Sing out with the happiness of Jacob, revel on the crests of nations, make it known, sing praises, say: ‘Lord, save Your people, the remnant of Israel! ‘Watch Me bring them from a northern land; I shall gather them in from the ends of the earth. Blind and limping men, pregnant women, all together, birthing mothers, a great flock of people will come back here; in tears they will come, and in mercy will I lead them, to rivers of water, along an open road, they will not stumble, for I have been Father to Israel, and Ephraim is My firstborn.” Listen, nations, to the word of the Lord; tell them in distant lands, far from here. And say, “The One who scattered Israel to the winds has gathered them, He guards them now as a shepherd does his flock.” Yes, the Lord has claimed back Jacob, has redeemed him from enslavement in stronger hands than his, and they will come singing joy from the heights of Zion, streaming down to the goodness of the Lord, [singing] of grain and of new wine and fresh oil, of the young of the flock and the cattle, and they will be like a garden watered lush, and they will not know this aching any more. Then the young girls will go out dancing to their happiness, boys and old men all together. “I shall turn all their mourning into joy, console them, and make happiness of grief. I shall have the priests sated with the offerings’ lushness, and My people will eat of My goodness and be full,” says the Lord. This is what the Lord has said: “A voice is heard in Ramah – lamenting, bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children, refusing to be consoled over her children, for they are not.” This is what the Lord has said: “Hold back your voice from weeping, your eyes from tears: there is reward for what you do,” says the Lord; “They will return from hostile land. There is hope for your future, and children will return to their own borders. I have heard it; I heard Ephraim rocking back and forth, saying, ‘You have punished me, I took punishment, I was like a calf untamed. Return me – let me return, for You are the Lord my God. For when I returned I regretted it all: when I came to know myself, I beat my thighs, I was ashamed, crushed; I bear the endless disgrace of my youth – Is Ephraim not a treasured son to Me, My child of delights? As I speak of him, always, I remember him once more. And so it is that I long for him within, I will tender him compassion,” says the Lord.

BLESSINGS AFTER THE HAFTARA

בָּרוּךְ Blessed are You, LORD our God, King of the Universe, Rock of all worlds, righteous for all generations, the faithful God who says and does, speaks and fulfills, all of whose words are truth and righteousness. רַחֵם Have compassion on Zion for it is the source of our life, and save the one grieved in spirit swiftly in our days. Blessed are You, LORD, who makes Zion rejoice in her children.

אָבִֽינוּ שֶׁבַּשָּׁמַֽיִם Heavenly Father, Israel’s Rock and Redeemer, bless the State of Israel, the first flowering of our redemption. Shield it under the wings of Your loving-kindness and spread over it the Tabernacle of Your peace. Send Your light and truth to its leaders, ministers and counselors, and direct them with good counsel before You.

Strengthen the hands of the defenders of our Holy Land; grant them deliverance, our God, and crown them with the crown of victory. Grant peace in the land and everlasting joy to its inhabitants.

As for our brothers, the whole house of Israel, remember them in all the lands of our (In Israel: their) dispersion, and swiftly lead us (In Israel: them) upright to Zion Your city, and Jerusalem Your dwelling place, as is written in the Torah of Moses Your servant: “Even if you are scattered to the furthermost lands under the heavens, from there the LORD your God will gather you and take you back. The LORD your God will bring you to the land your ancestors possessed and you will possess it; and He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors. Then the LORD your God will open up your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.”

Unite our hearts to love and revere Your name and observe all the words of Your Torah, and swiftly send us Your righteous anointed one of the house of David, to redeem those who long for Your salvation.

Appear in Your glorious majesty over all the dwellers on earth, and let all who breathe declare: The LORD God of Israel is King and His kingship has dominion over all. Amen, Selah.

PRAYER FOR ISRAEL’S DEFENSE FORCES

מִי שֶׁבֵּרַךְ May He who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, bless the members of Israel’s Defense Forces and its security services who stand guard over our land and the cities of our God, from the Lebanese border to the Egyptian desert, from the Mediterranean sea to the approach of the Aravah, and wherever else they are, on land, in air and at sea. May the LORD make the enemies who rise against us be struck down before them. May the Holy One, blessed be He, protect and deliver them from all trouble and distress, affliction and illness, and send blessing and success to all the work of their hands. May He subdue our enemies under them and crown them with deliverance and victory. And may there be fulfilled in them the verse, “It is the LORD your God who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to deliver you.” And let us say: Amen.

PRAYER FOR THOSE BEING HELD IN CAPTIVITY

מִי שֶׁבֵּרַךְ May He who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Joseph, Moses and Aaron, David and Solomon, bless, protect and guard the members of Israel’s Defense Forces missing in action or held captive, and other captives among our brethren, the whole house of Israel, who are in distress or captivity, as we, the members of this holy congregation, pray on their behalf. May the Holy One, blessed be He, have compassion on them and bring them out from darkness and the shadow of death; may He break their bonds, deliver them from their distress, and bring them swiftly back to their families’ embrace. Give thanks to the LORD for His loving-kindness and for the wonders He does for the children of men; and may there be fulfilled in them the verse: “Those redeemed by the LORD will return; they will enter Zion with singing, and everlasting joy will crown their heads.
