Musaf for Rosh Ḥodesh

THE AMIDA

When I proclaim the LORD’s name, give glory to our God.

O LORD, open my lips, so that my mouth may declare Your praise.

PATRIARCHS

▾בָּרוּךְ Blessed are You, LORD our God and God of our fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob; the great, mighty and awesome God, God Most High, who bestows acts of loving-kindness and creates all, who remembers the loving-kindness of the fathers and will bring a Redeemer to their children’s children for the sake of His name, in love.

King, Helper, Savior, Shield: ▾Blessed are You, LORD, Shield of Abraham.

DIVINE MIGHT

אַתָּה גִּבּוֹר You are eternally mighty, LORD. You give life to the dead and have great power to save.

In fall & winter: He makes the wind blow and the rain fall. In Israel, in spring & summer: He causes the dew to fall.

He sustains the living with loving-kindness, and with great compassion revives the dead. He supports the fallen, heals the sick, sets captives free, and keeps His faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like You, Master of might, and and who can compare to You, O King who brings death and gives life, and makes salvation grow?

Faithful are You to revive the dead. Blessed are You, LORD, who revives the dead.

KEDUSHA

Cong. then Leader: נַעֲרִיצְךָ We will revere and sanctify You with the words uttered by the holy Seraphim who sanctify Your name in the Sanctuary; as is written by Your prophet: “They call out to one another, saying:

Cong. then Leader: ▴Holy, ▴holy, ▴holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole world is filled with His glory.”

His glory fills the universe. His ministering angels ask each other, “Where is the place of His glory?” Those facing them reply “Blessed –

Cong. then Leader: ▴▴“Blessed is the LORD’s glory from His place.”

And in Your holy Writings it is written:

Cong. then Leader:▴“The LORD shall reign for ever. He is your God, Zion, from generation to generation, Halleluya!”

Leader: On Shabbat Shuva: From generation to generation we will declare Your greatness, and we will proclaim Your holiness for evermore. Your praise, our God, shall not leave our mouth forever, for You, God, are a great and holy King. Blessed are You, LORD, the holy God.

HOLINESS

אַתָּה קָדוֹשׁ You are holy and Your name is holy, and holy ones praise You daily, Selah! Blessed are You, LORD, the holy God.

HOLINESS OF THE DAY

רָאשֵׁי חֳדָשִׁים You have given New Moons to Your people as a time of atonement for all their offspring. They would bring You offerings of goodwill, and goats as sin-offerings for atonement. May it serve as a remembrance for them all, and a deliverance of their lives from the hand of the enemy. May You establish a new altar in Zion, and may we offer on it the New Moon burnt-offering, and prepare goats in favor. May we all rejoice in the Temple service, and may the songs of David Your servant, be heard in Your city, chanted before Your altar. Bestow on them everlasting love, and remember the covenant of the fathers for their children.

וַהֲבִיאֵֽנוּ Bring us back, with song, to Zion Your city, and to Jerusalem Your Sanctuary with everlasting joy. There we will prepare for You our obligatory offerings: the regular daily offerings in their order, and the additional offerings according to their law.

וְאֶת מוּסַף The additional offering of this New Moon day we will prepare and offer to You with love according to Your will’s commandment, as You have written for us in Your Torah by Your own word, through Your servant Moses, as it is said: “On your new moons, present as a burnt-offering to the LORD, two young bulls, one ram, and seven yearling lambs without blemish.”

וּמִנְחָתָם And their meal-offerings and wine-libations as ordained: three-tenths of an ephah for each bull, two-tenths of an ephah for the ram, one-tenth of an ephah for each lamb, wine for the libations, a male goat for atonement, and two regular daily offerings according to their law.

אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ O God and God of our ancestors, renew for us the coming month for good and blessing, joy and gladness, deliverance and consolation, sustenance and support, life and peace, pardon of sin and forgiveness of iniquity (From Marḥeshvan to Adar II in a Jewish leap year (see page 1332) and atonement of transgression). For You have chosen Your people Israel from all nations, and have instituted for them rules for the New Moon. Blessed are You, LORD, who sanctifies Israel and the New Moons.

TEMPLE SERVICE

רְצֵה Find favor, LORD our God, in Your people Israel and their prayer. Restore the service to Your most holy House, and accept in love and favor the fire-offerings of Israel and their prayer. May the service of Your people Israel always find favor with You. And may our eyes witness Your return to Zion in compassion. Blessed are You, LORD, who restores His Presence to Zion.

THANKSGIVING

▾מוֹדִים We give thanks to You, for You are the Lord our God and God of our ancestors for ever and all time. You are the Rock of our lives, Shield of our salvation from generation to generation. We will thank You and declare Your praise for our lives, which are entrusted into Your hand; for our souls, which are placed in Your charge; for Your miracles which are with us every day; and for Your wonders and favors at all times, evening, morning and midday. You are good – for Your compassion never fails. You are compassionate – for Your loving-kindnesses never cease. We have always placed our hope in You.

During the Leader’s Repetition, the congregation says quietly: ▾מוֹדִים We give thanks to You, for You are the Lord our God and God of our ancestors, God of all flesh, who formed us and formed the universe. Blessings and thanks are due to Your great and holy name for giving us life and sustaining us. May You continue to give us life and sustain us; and may You gather our exiles to Your holy courts, to keep Your decrees, do Your will and serve You with a perfect heart, for it is for us to give You thanks. Blessed be God to whom thanks­giving is due.

On Hannuka: עַל הַנִּסִּים [We thank You also] for the miracles, the redemption, the mighty deeds, the salvations, and the victories in battle which You performed for our ancestors in those days, at this time. בִּימֵי מַתִּתְיָֽהוּ In the days of Mattityahu, son of Yoḥanan, the High Priest, the Hasmonean, and his sons, the wicked Greek kingdom rose up against Your people Israel to make them forget Your Torah and to force them to transgress the statutes of Your will. It was then that You in Your great compassion stood by them in the time of their distress. You championed their cause, judged their claim, and avenged their wrong. You delivered the strong into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, the impure into the hands of the pure, the wicked into the hands of the righteous, and the arrogant into the hands of those who were engaged in the study of Your Torah. You made for Yourself great and holy renown in Your world, and for Your people Israel You performed a great salvation and redemption as of this very day. Your children then entered the holiest part of Your House, cleansed Your Temple, purified Your Sanctuary, kindled lights in Your holy courts, and designated these eight days of Ḥanukka for giving thanks and praise to Your great name. Continue with “For all these things.”

וְעַל כֻּלָּם For all these things may Your name be blessed and exalted, our King, continually, for ever and all time. Let all that lives thank You, Selah! and praise Your name in truth, God, our Savior and Help, Selah! ▾▾Blessed are You, LORD, whose name is “the Good” and to whom thanks are due.

The following is said by the Leader during the Repetition of the Amida. In Israel, if Kohanim bless the congregation, turn to page 838. See laws 370–377. Our God and God of our fathers, bless us with the threefold blessing in the Torah, written by the hand of Moses Your servant and pronounced by Aaron and his sons the priests, Your holy people, as it is said: May the Lord bless you and protect you. Cong: May it be Your will. May the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. Cong: May it be Your will. May the Lord turn His face toward you, and grant you peace. Cong: May it be Your will.

PEACE

שִׂים שָׁלוֹם Grant peace, goodness and blessing, grace, loving-kindness and compassion to us and all Israel Your people. Bless us, our Father, all as one, with the light of Your face, for by the light of Your face You have given us, LORD our God, the Torah of life and love of kindness, righteousness, blessing, compassion, life and peace. May it be good in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel at every time, in every hour, with Your peace.

Blessed are You, LORD, who blesses His people Israel with peace.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart find favor before You, LORD, my Rock and Redeemer.

אֱלֹהַי My God, guard my tongue from evil and my lips from deceitful speech. To those who curse me, let my soul be silent; may my soul be to all like the dust. Open my heart to Your Torah and let my soul pursue Your commandments. As for all who plan evil against me, swiftly thwart their counsel and frustrate their plans. Act for the sake of Your name; act for the sake of Your right hand; act for the sake of Your holiness; act for the sake of Your Torah. That Your beloved ones may be delivered, save with Your right hand and answer me. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart find favor before You, LORD, my Rock and Redeemer.

May He who makes peace in His high places, make peace for us and all Israel – and say: Amen.

יְהִי רָצוֹן May it be Your will, LORD our God and God of our ancestors, that the Temple be rebuilt speedily in our days, and grant us a share in Your Torah. And there we will serve You with reverence, as in the days of old and as in former years. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.
